I\'ve just realised that "ProAlloy" are just up the road from me in Haverhill, Suffolk. I never knew there was a specialist company doing that work so close by.
Until yesterday I hadn\'t realised that they did Max\'s Nipon Challenge cars

For the first time in many years I find myself wanting an FD. :o
You should be ashamed - look at what you\'ve done to me! :D
Haverhill\'s even closer to me. Very cool!

Nice work, looking awesome :)

Now that\'s how to roll!! You have to get the side stickered up with kermit on the side.
Are you going to be running some kind of diffuser on the rear of the car? I think it would look good and break up the big butt kII has
Yep, diffuser is planned, not completely sure on the colour schemes yet. :)

What are you going to use for the diffuser? A custom ally one? As you have moved the fuel tanks you could take it from the floor all the way up too the underside of the boot floor and run the exhaust down the middle of it.
Nice plan but another of the reasons for moving the fuel tank was to run the exhaust up inside and a twin tail pipe coming
out either side of the lock in the rear bumper, we\'ve then got ALL the underneath to play with for a very big and custom
diffuser, along with a flat floor. ;)

Torque Zone - featuring Team Green :Thumbs-up
How are you going to transport your fuel ? Would have thought that would be the greatest weight in the lorry for your 7.5 tonne limit.
Shaun
Will keep a close eye on the weight but with K-II comong in at just 1 ton we should have plenty of leway, the fuel goes in the lockers
down the sides, besides, with 3 x 1000cc primaries an 3 x 2000cc secondaries.... I may require a tanker following behind !! :Giggle
Quote from: shaunwil;840972How are you going to transport your fuel ? Would have thought that would be the greatest weight in the lorry for your 7.5 tonne limit.
Shaun
You could be talking 200-250kg of fuel (including jerry cans) for a trackday !
Shaun
Back of a fag packet calculations indicate that is enough injectors for 1000 bhp on super unleaded.
lol, you\'d be correct, a single dash-10 fuel line to the dash-8 fuel rails, we\'re looking for the 1000bhp and will then back
it off to about 800 for track. :wiggle

Gotta love a car that\'s "backed off to 800 bhp".

1,000 bhp 20B..... Where have I heard that before? Jokes. Will you get that target before syed does? My money\'s on you for sure although yours is a track car and sheds trying to keep it as a street car
pmsl, I think I\'ve got everything on the car to do it though !! hehe.... and YES I WILL win the race to the 4 figure mark. :)
Oh... K-II WILL be road legal. :)

Didn\'t the engine make 1100bhp in the past in Kermit I and you backed it off ??
Shaun
In a cheating way, K-II will be much more of everything and properly done this time.

Not with those slicks it won\'t ;) :D I think the HP bench mark has now been set by Craig and his turbo v8 so one of the 20B boys need to try and challenge him in both HP and torque.
lol, I\'ve got an identical set of wheels with road tyres on !! hehe
Thats cheating putting a virus in a rex, lol what figures has he claimed ?

Why is that? Aren\'t there PR drag car using standard shafts and plates making 1500+HP?
nope! they use modified standard plates but billet shafts because of flex, you\'ll still break the thick iron and front plate quite easily on a turbo car if the tune isnt spot on and the block not pinned correctly.
looking forward to seeing this on track dave :)

Thanks Column, more pics to come when Pip fixes his phone, should have
pics of the engine refresh
and new bigger porting together with the manifold fabrication.

Mmmm, carbony ;)
Well, pretty much my last bit of expensive kit arrived yesterday and HAVE to say... it\'s fecking amazeballs !!!
This race battery is only 1.5 kg and is about the same as an oversized rubics cube with big power output,
considering it\'s JUST a battery..... it\'s ubber cool. :D
A BIG thanks to Clive (Shy Auto Developments) for sorting. :)

How much do they go for?
How far off is the car from being fired up?
Hiya Grant,
it costs about the £350 mark for the battery.
The manifold SHOULD be completed today or tomorrow so will go and pick K-II up as soon as I get
the nod, then we can start to put him together in earnest, still probably about 4 weeks away from firing up.
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;843725How much do they go for?

Fairly bit of expensive kit is the battery. Found it on MRP, I don\'t think people will realise just how much weight you will save by using that battery.
Who\'s done the manifold for you? Pip?
Absolutely, not only the weight, it\'s the size, we can mount it ANYWHERE and the brackets don\'t have to be substancial etc.
Yeah, Pips doing the manifold, can\'t wait to see the new turbo, wastegate, water pump, oil pump etc in the flesh !!! lol

I think a lot if people will be e cited to see it.
Are you running an EWP?
lol. I didn\'t want to but because of the size of the turbo it was unavoidable.

Early birthday prezzie from a good friend of mine... thanks Amy.

Awesome :D
Shaun
Which EWP have you gone for then?
Hi Marky, didn\'t discuss it with Pip, I just said get it done !!! lol
My last one was a Davies Craig one, will prob be the same on K-II. :)
You can tell I\'m bored waiting for Pip to sort the manifold out..... trouble is when I\'m bored I have other ideas,
thought I may as well get a tool box for the race truck and then get the colour coded tools to the car. lol
It\'s official.... I\'m a tart !!!!

Not much to report as Pip STILL has the bloody car... getting annoyed now (new experience for me), I may
have to just collect the car no matter what stage it\'s in.
I\'m VERY limited in what I can do without the shell but I had the dashboard flocked today. :)

Cant believe this is the first time I have looked at this thread - Loving the car, good stuff :D
Do you know what\'s taking him so long? Or has he got other cars to do before yours?
Thanks fella, can\'t wait to get the car back from Pip then we can complete the build and start to race the beastie. :)
Trying to get info out of Pip is like sticking a piece of coal between your buttocks and trying to produce a diamond.
I actually get more info out of his customers that go up there, I KNOW there was a leak on the new manifold and had to
come off but that should take minutes to sort out and then all the pipes and assembly has to be sent to Zircotec for
ceramic coating...but again shouldn\'t take very long to sort out.
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;845768Do you know what\'s taking him so long? Or has he got other cars to do before yours?

Will the angle of the turbo be fine for draining oil? I\'m sure there\'s a certain angle you can\'t go passed? Maybe I\'m wrong
Looks like it is dry sumped, shouldn\'t that be keeping a positive pressure of oil going to the turbo regardless of the angle it\'s mounted at?

Damn, beaten to giving the answer, yep, through the dry sump pumps its always on a pressure feed which
massively helps with the cooling of the turbo.
Ahh I see, but won\'t the pressure of the oil force it out and forwards, through the front seal? Hmm. Just ignore me if I\'m talking crap.
With the dry sump do you have to prime the system to get oil pressure before starting the engine?
Have seen a build on rx7 club and he has mounted some gubbings inside the car for his oil system. I will find a link and show you, you will know what it is better than me.

I\'ve got the oil resevoir in the passenger footwell but the system isn\'t under enough pressure to go through the
seals and defo doesn\'t need priming, the only thing I have to wait for momentarily is the fuel pumps to fill the
swirl pot.
Here\'s the thread, last page, second pic, writing above it describes what it is. Maybe require for NA high rpm motors??

I\'m guessing it\'s something to do with wanting to prevent the motor starting without oil pressure.

Filler pipes? Ah yes 2 tanks, do you have cross pipes so that the level stays the same across the tanks? Will you be running it on race fuel or are you going for vpower and WI?
Yep, there\'s a pipe at the top of the tanks to equal out the gasses and one at the bottom to level the fuel, we
only require one fuel sender then. :)
She\'ll be mapped on BP Ultimate or VPower, still thinking about the methanol
at the moment. :)

I\'ve just received word from the makers, the two cans have been fabricated and are being sent
tomorrow, we\'re putting a flange either side of them to make them easily changeable but also gives us

Hi Leeroy, a cuppa is always available when you pop over.
The rest of the exhaust will be completed on Monday and I will order another intercooler as we need a specific
shape and size for what we\'re trying to achieve.
Good luck with the brackets, they\'re awkward buggers to make as you need 10 pairs of hands !! :)
Cheers.. I am less concerned with the brackets and more worried what I am putting where! Really cannot decide. I have 2 intercoolers waiting to be cut up and I cannot bring myself to do it! Will have to take the plunge soon or go with a different setup that means no cutting!
You are lucky having so much more room to play with on a race car..
You say that but I\'ve got to put all the coolers somewhere, heat is a racers devil.
1. Big Intercooler
2. Big Radiator
3. TWO big engine oil coolers
4. Big Gearbox cooler
5. Fuel cooler.
And I\'m even toying with a Diff cooler if I can work a way of doing it !! hehe
Bit of a \'sitement\' nightmare to say the least !! lol
Fuel cooler?! Didn\'t know there was such a thing!? Are u planning on racing in the dessert or something!? Looking forward to seeing your cooler setup!
Fuel coolers are necessary as engine bay heat can heat up the fuel in the lines and returns to the tanks, fuel coolers keep the temp consistent and low so that everything going into your engine is consistent. Makes things easier to tune etc,
Tbh think that might be a bit of a Myth, but would be interested to see.
We\'ve measured the fuel temps on K-I and they do rise significantly on full chat on track, defo needed.
Fair enough, But to me that sounds like your not using Insulated Fuel pipes? shifting the amount of fuel you will be at 40-50psi it\'s going to be moving quite fast through the pipes. On our Rally car with a 1lt swirl pot the fuel temp did creep up when cruising off boost but at full chat it was pulling 90% fresh fuel from the tank so stayed about ambient temp.
Anyway be interesting to see the results.

Thats good info, we will have to recheck the temps again on K-II as its
a dash 10 fuel line with dash 8 rails now so the flow will be slightly slower....
.... we think !! lol
rotarys love to heat up the fuel. we found this with the drag car on the dyno and on our t/a build, we were not able to touch the swirlpot after 5-10 laps of donnington
a few of the timeattack rotaries in jp run a fuel cooler in the numberplate recess

We\'re thinking of running a small vent under the car when we flat floor it and run ducting into the new fuel tank area for the cooler
AND keep the whole assembly cool.

lol, it depends on what power you\'re running and what you\'re going to use the car for.
I\'ll be putting mine on the lines from the swirl pot to the fuel rails. :)
we got best results putting on the return ;)
:censored::censored::censored::censored:ing the lot off and going non return gives the best results tho ;)
Colum, do you have any Info on None return systems? Its some thing that\'s interesting.

Quote from: Grizzly;849729Colum, do you have any Info on None return systems? Its some thing that\'s interesting.
Sicknote, Sorry to mess your Thread up.
I\'ve never even considered a non return system and would be interested
myself as to the pro\'s and con\'s, so don\'t think it\'s cluttering up the
thread Grizzly .... it\'s all educational. :)
pro\'s: no regulator in the bay, no return line, saves weight slightly, no heating of fuel
con\'s not found any yet, bit of a faff running a decent size vac line to the rear of the car but such if life
most modern cars now use non return systems.
even tho reg\'s fuel was getting hot on the dyno after about 20 odd pulls we aint changed that as it only runs at wot for 9 or so seconds, hopefully 8 this year but the timeattack build and di\'s car are both going non return, i ran it on my road car for years
also dave, not to p i s s on your chips but im slightly concerned at the angle of that tubby, keep an eye out for oil in the intercooler and inlet of the huge snail
This may sound daft but how does it work? i have seen pics of one a bit ago but it didn\'t seem to make sense some how?
Do you use the Return line off the Regulator to feed the rails?
Not that much Fafing, I\'m just about to fit Stainless hard pipes front to back (don\'t like Braided hose) and the idea of only needing one line and a small vac pipe is appealing :)
no, pressure feed as normal and blank the return from the rails
Angle of the turbo makes no difference fella unless you think it\'ll wear the bearings quicker !!! lol
is it bb or journal?
also if you are interested, this is how most lsx setups are

So I take it the fuel filter regulator is the same as an FPR and has just a one way to the rails and the return.
Just thinking are these Non return type setups a PITA to bleed up?
To start with yeah but it bleeds through the injectors

You seem to be on a roll at the mo.. I am right slow! Also started hacking up intercoolers this weekend! What size is your core if you don\'t mind me asking?
Cheers
Lee
My very scientific template !! lol
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Picture721_zps03784611.jpg)
Is that a 440 or 490mm? So the core is about 540mm wide with the end caps off. Wonder how that compares to what I am working on?! Is it a bar and plate type core? I think so but I was not too sure from the pic!
How did you go about working out the size or have the people making it done that for you?

440 x 550. I made a 3d intercooler to check the sizes so when it comes in tomorrow it should just slot in then we have to mark up
for the brackets. yep, bar and plate with a mid flow core.
Quite a bit larger than mine as it\'s currently planned. Almost double in fact! By my calcs mine should be large enough to do the job?! Maybe I missed a x2 somewhere. That said you are going for a lot more power than me I believe?
I meant how did you arrive at that size for your power goal? I.e cooling efficiency and not oversize or undersize?
Quote from: leeroy_25;851073Quite a bit larger than mine as it\'s currently planned. Almost double in fact! By my calcs mine should be large enough to do the job?! Maybe I missed a x2 somewhere. That said you are going for a lot more power than me I believe?
lol, we\'ve designed it to sit much lower than the other v-mounts out there, the reasons its narrower than others is because
it has to sit BETWEEN the chassis arms whereas all the others has the intercooler on top, with my way it\'s lower
AND further forward to create more room.
Quote from: leeroy_25;851074I meant how did you arrive at that size for your power goal? I.e cooling efficiency and not oversize or undersize?
A bit of working out from power, flow and air volume guestimate figures, there are some good websites out there to help
with the figures, K-II is by no means exact but we hope its close to the optimum. :)
Is that 2 cores you have there for the IC?
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;851090Is that 2 cores you have there for the IC?
, yep, didn\'t have room fot three.
Flat floor will be awesome :D
I used some websites to work out my IC setup too.. and also went on the the size of a normal aftermarket SMIC for the 13B as a guage which all seemed to work out roughly!
Think I am just going to have to go for it and if it doesn\'t work it can always be changed. Not the end of the world!
Well we got on with the exhaust but didn\'t get too far as we run out of bloody gas, so the evening was cut short
One of the cans is now in place ready for the v-bands and final bends to be welded in.
The intercooler is a work of art... and bloody huge !!!
And Eyo got on with fibreglassing the ducting in the bumper.

And for tonights developments :-
Intercooler is now positioned and one completed side of the
exhaust, the other can is in place as we are waiting for the 90% 3" pipes.
Excuse the bad quality photos tonight, I forgot the camera and these are on the phone. :)

We\'ve v-banded both the cans on both ends so for the shows we can quickly whip em off and put the

These were the resulting parts removed

And sited the Sparco extinguisher bottle

Looking really cool Dave.
Thanks Carl, you harbour parts down there, have you got any flat frp or carbon door cards hanging around in a dark corner ready to be liberated ? :)
That is coming along great! Loving the progress. That light at the end of the tunnel must be closing in now? What is your estimate for completion?
Hi Leeroy, I rekon 4-5 weeks till the strip down and paint, then 2-3 weeks for the complete rebuild and start up time. :)

What are those canisters in the boot leading under the car? I think they say nitro on them? Suspension remote reservoirs???
Also with the exhausts will you get much of the gases going out through passenger side muffler?
Yep, they\'re the Nitron suspension remote reservoirs .
I think it will be a 45/55 % split, we\'ve channeled inside the split pipe join to push gasses accross to the left side. :)

All good then, was thinking if there wasn\'t some kind of divertor it wouldn\'t be used.
What are you flat bottoming and making the diffuser out of?
Aluminium plating for the majority of the floor and we\'ll be making a fibreglass rear diffuser ourselves. :)

Dave,
I\'ve followed your build thread since it started, just awesome the quality of the build and the quality of the work.
It\'s amazing to think how hard you have worked to get to this from the FD I followed at Castle Combe almost 12 months ago.
For what its worth, well done.
Chris
Can\'t wait to get out on track with this buzzing round, amazing to think its 12 months ago !
Shaun
Not too much movement tonight considering the amount of work put in.
We came to the conclusion that the only way we could get the optimum position for me was to cut the floor
out and start again so thats what we did !! :D
First tonight I installed the 044 fuel pumps.

Another fiddly bit tonight with the fuel system. Back onto the seats tomorrow evening.
The fuel parts arrived today, all the joins and the teflon hoses.
Drilled a couple of holes in preparation for the hose grommet and hoses to run through.
And fitted the fuel pumps properly and a few of the joins in preparation for the arrival of the dash 10 fuel filter tomorrow.
Hey Dave.. So much bling!
I didn\'t get any message back from you the other day unless it got junked?!
Let me know as I am hoping to make some good progress this weekend in that department!
Stupid question...
Aren\'t you supposed to filter the fuel before the pumps? Then they don\'t get clogged up? Not that they will get anything in them anyway
You\'d never get anything big enough in there to clog a pump, the filter is to protect the injectors from debris
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;853448Stupid question...

OK, we\'ve really been lacking in motivation as the latest bits have taken so long, but we stuck at it today and Balky
finished welding the drivers lowered floorpan in.

I then made the executive decision to go a different direction with the stalks and switches.
Firstly I removed the stalks

Then we fabricated a bracket and welded it into place in my optimum position.

These are the little babies that are to replace the stalks. :D
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Kermit%20II/8_zps4cd848d4.jpg)
And then prepping the dash to accept them.

And the finished article (they look a bit :censored::censored::censored::censored:ed but the panel isn\'t straight and they ARE level)
Right, a few more things done tonight
Started working on the gearstick, for my new seat position I wanted it lower so we cut the stick down, re-drilled out the
shaft and tapped the hole. oooh err missus !!
Then we made a temporary plate for the assembly to sit on so that we know all the bolt positions (new nice plate to be
made next week). Just a few small mods to be made to perfect the system and the look, then thats another job out of the way. :D
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Kermit%20II/7_zpsa335e7fb.jpg)

Oh... and this is my new indicator stalk !!!
And the last thing done tonight was modding the front lights to accept the HID split beam lamps.
Awesome progress :D
Does that mean the headlights will just be the smaller front lights ?? Cool idea !
Shaun
Thanks fella, yep thats right, we\'re just condensing ALL the lights into the teardrops, the pop up covers will still
remain to make it look like nothings changed but we needed the space under them for all the cooling going on !! :mmmm
Quote from: shaunwil;854557Awesome progress :D

Righty, First tonight was to position the extinguisher bottle and prep the gearstick to accept the Shimano neutral release
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Kermit%20II/1_zps5bb7ee3a.jpg)
Then started the fabrication for the exhaust covers.

the handbrake lever to the other side.

We\'re all very dedicated to our cars and are fundamental to make these awesome projects a reality.

I\'d do a swap, my missus for this car.
The throttle pedal went on today (no pics as I started feeling ill)
We put the rear stansions and wing on together with the rear lights... starting to look like a car again !!
Only prob is we\'re not happy with the way the rear wing sits so the stansions will have to be re-made with a more aggressive angle.

Most of this on the floor is being binned, we just strung it all out incase there are any connectors that are required.

This is the new lighter and smaller race alternator, would have been MUCH smaller if K-II wasn\'t going to be
road legal, but this little baby still knocks out 120 amps.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Kermit%20II/Picture1069_zps9da21c8b.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/Sicknote301/media/Kermit%20II/Picture1069_zps9da21c8b.jpg.html)
Phase II of the wiring proved to be VERY problematic
The new MoTeC looms don\'t match up to the older ECU\'s even though theyre still labeled M600 and M800, thus ALL the pins had to be
taken out of the blocks, tested and re-routed, this took UBBER amounts of time.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Kermit%20II/Picture1072_zps40cba631.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/Sicknote301/media/Kermit%20II/Picture1072_zps40cba631.jpg.html)

The external Fire Extinguisher and Kill switches are now installed and ready to be wired in.
And just finished the drivers and passengers floors and sat them in place, looks quite neat if I do say so myself. :D

Thanks Brett, can\'t wait for the wiring to be finished this weekend, just the fuel rails to come in from Oz and to make the
brackets for the Electric water pump and alternator then we can strip her down for Zircotec, polishing and the shell to be painted. :)
Are you mounting the EWP solid? As they\'re supposed to be allowed to move and expand or they will brake
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;856222Are you mounting the EWP solid? As they\'re supposed to be allowed to move and expand or they will brake
Never heard of that, I will check the instructions tomorrow, cheers Grant. :)
If its a Craig David one then it needs to be allowed to move, as you can imagine they get quite warm, and with such expand. I didn\'t know about it until someone pointed it out to me. You could maybe mount but using bushing to let it move around a little. Still trying to figure about the best way to mount mine as don\'t want it just "hanging" around in my nice engine bay.

I want mine to be seen as it looks quite cool so I\'m polishing it !!! lol
Oh you have the metal one don\'t you?? Maybe won\'t expand as much as the plastic one. I just couldn\'t bring myself to pay for the metal EWP as I\'m running 2 on my car, one for engine and one for the charge cooler

Shaun
Me too. Have Kermit next to our drag car would look cool like lime and orange tictacs
Well, if you want to, you cant put that engine and gearbox in to box and send it to me ;)
Nice progress, really looks awesome. And that turbo is huge :D

Or me (cheaper shipping costs ;)), and no, that turbo isn\'t huge, it\'s insane :D
Watch those coil leads Dave, you need to conduct them well away from the metal plate you have made and at same time not too close to each other.
How much does a gear box like that cost? Must have robbed a few banks
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;856986How much does a gear box like that cost? Must have robbed a few banks
lol, it\'s the MakTrak box, was about £9k
Well done Dave and Team. Look forward to seeing this in action.
Chris
@Casey lol Yes, my bad. Its insane! I bet that when it comes to boost, it sounds like frickin´ jet turbine :D
Right, sorry for the lack of pics, to be honest not much has happened as I seem to have lost all motivation but
we loaded K-II into the caravan and took her to her new home for the next 2-3 weeks, just went down there to
drop the rear lights only to find they\'ve already started work on her. starting to feel a bit more with it again.
This is a very novel place to install the inside door handle !! lol

Can\'t wait to see it painted :D
The motivation will all come back once the shell is painted, then it will be all worth it once its running round a track !
Shaun
Keep the pics and progress reports flowing Dave, we are all looking forward to seeing the finished article!
Thanks guys.
I went over the body shop on the way home, I didn\'t bother taking pics as they will look similar to the ones above
at this stage but I have to say they\'re really cracking on with the prep, they\'ve built up certain areas, all the gaps
now look great and they\'ve been cutting away wheel arch areas for clearance and turning circle. Awesome stuff. :)
I don\'t know how you can loose motivation this close to the finishline!! You will be in that driving seat soon enough! I was like that a while ago with mine when it seemed never ending! just got to plough through!
Motivation gets lost because towards the end the jobs are small and time consuming with not a lot to show for the effort put in.
You get plenty of jobs like that all through a build!!
I know but I mean things like wiring, with my rx4 I\'m just re using the standard car wiring and adding my ecu and a couple other things, but I know I\'m just going to have to chop the lot out and do it again because there is so much useles stuff in there. That would take me days to do but wouldn\'t even be seen after tucking it away:( big job, little satisfaction = no motivation
Took a little trip over to these guys today to drop a few bits off.

Interested to see what you get.

Hi Leeroy, yep, the manifold, the 4\' section of the downpipe and the turbo hotside, all in metalic black. :)
Cool.. Interested to know what that costs? I presume you are doing this instead of heat wrapping? Might consider that for mine too? Heat wrap looks so untidy.
Quote from: leeroy_25;858181Cool.. Interested to know what that costs? I presume you are doing this instead of heat wrapping? Might consider that for mine too? Heat wrap looks so untidy.
Those three parts alone (inc VAT) cost just over a grand.
For a race car then the cost of coating is worth it but there\'s no way a road car necessitates that stuff unless you have more cash to burn. The titanium wraps are good enough
Does your turbo still hold the warrenty if you coat the inside of the turbo housing? I know some companies won\'t.
What paint are you having the car done in? Matt, flat, metallic, or pearl metal flake??
I think a green pearl would look good but be a bad decision for a race car

I Ummed and arrred over this for months and months but came to the conclusion that a flat Kawasaki green
would look best on track, there will be a few black areas and the graphics to be added so SHOULD look quite cool. :)

And you\'re right, I wouldn\'t go to the expense of ceramic coating Roxy\'s manifold but K-II will be an out and out race car
although road legal) and we HAVE to keep the temps down at all costs.

Why did you keep the engine bay white?
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;858985Why did you keep the engine bay white?
Would have meant completely taking the electrics, master cylinder, fuel and oil lines out so just kept it simple, I actually
quite like it though, gives it the race feel. :)
I think it looks good, gives it contrast
for things to look at although being white I would have OCD to clean it all the time.
I don\'t think it looks good on road cars though, it gives the impression that the person was too lazy to give the whole car a respray. :( me and my dad have done 5 cars, complete back to shell resprays, was a pain in the arse but it all matched and looked good. Well worth the extra effort

Defo agree with the road car thing, looks unfinished, I made a decision today, I\'m going to take moulds of those rear arches
and give Roxy the same treatment !! :)
Won\'t taking molds damage the new paint? I think roxy will look good with those rears, but I would do something different with the fronts so the cars are different but as wide as each other:D
I will find a picture of the front wings I really like at the moment
TCP MAGIC wide body kit, I really like the front wings on this kit but the rears don\'t suit them,(http://i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc507/grantmonkhouse/06B69C40-6FCF-4DE6-A253-07E154B96664-11475-000003808B9A1D4C.jpg)
I\'m in agreement, defo needs something different on the front.
The fabrication guys said it\'s soo much easier with fresh smooth paint to make the moulds and the paintwork will be absolutely fine. :)
couldnt you just buy the rear arches?
Quote from: marco;859047couldnt you just buy the rear arches?
They\'ve been filled and modified too much, will be easier to just copy the new ones. :)

That zircotec flex stuff looks really, how much is a sheet??
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;859303That zircotec flex stuff looks really, how much is a sheet??
Expensive stuff Grant, a 900mm x 550mm sheet is £83, I had to buy three sheets today as we\'re going to cover the
LIM, Brake master cylinder housing and the entire tunnel.
But it is VERY good stuff.
That\'s expensive, think I would only need one sheet, but probably cheaper to make a shield out of something else as my turbo sits very very close to my LIM:(
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;859306That\'s expensive, think I would only need one sheet, but probably cheaper to make a shield out of something else as my turbo sits very very close to my LIM:(
It\'s the lowest temp flexible sheets I could find on the market, I know what you mean about the close proximity, mine
is almost touching the LIM. :)
What do you mean by lowest temp ?? Lowest temp transfer through the sheeting? I will take a picture of how close mine is it the weekend, I think it\'s less than 5mm:eek
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;859310What do you mean by lowest temp ?? Lowest temp transfer through the sheeting? I will take a picture of how close mine is it the weekend, I think it\'s less than 5mm:eek
Yep, thats exactly it.
I think we\'ve both got the same problem on that one. :)
Not much to report tonight as we\'re waiting for the inlet gasket set to come in from Chris at ReWorx (life saver, thanks mate)
so just a solitary pic of the gearbox oil cooler that Demon Tweeks kindly sent me today. :)

Just a quick update.
I\'ve asked Danny to organise the Rear wing stansions that he\'s re-designed.
The engineers came in today and took away the inlet manifolds and fuel rails to re-design and fabricate the injector positions.
And I\'ve ordered up all the engine side fuel connectors for the bulkhead, fuel rails and FPR.
Nothing in the way of pics but at least things are moving again.
Tomorrow we weld up the holes in the passenger floor pan and paint it.
Glad to see things coming along.. That flex heatshield you re using.. Is it self adhesive? Does it have a glass fibre backing layer for insulation like gentex? I need to get some more of that stuff. The last stuff I had was not self adhesive. But very good.

Hello fella, you can select either as they make it in-house, mine IS self adhesive but it\'s expensive stuff, a 900 x 550mm
sheet is about £80 but for the rotaries I think it\'s essential when racing as we run so damn hot !!! :)
Hmm.. might look into it.. I think the gentex I used was similar but I was lucky to get some offcuts from my work! I like the idea of the wrap on the LIM. Much neater than heatshields
I want to do the inner chassis rail too and need to make some heat reflective braids for various wires and pipes near the exhaust run.
Just another spot on your pics. Have you had some injector holes reducer shims made for the secondaries? If so did you get spares if not where did you get them off the shelf. I know I need some although I have not measure up yet.
Cheers
Lee
I\'ve given the adapters that I got with the rail kit to the engineers, wether they make some to put into the LIM or
they use them I\'m not sure but at the end of the day it only needs to be a welded-in tube. :)
I\'ll be wrapping the entire tunnel and fabricating a steel heat shield for the brake master cylinder area, heat is our enemy !! :)
Ooooh, more green bits !! :)

Sure. I charge 1 x 20B block per 2 weeks of sunshine and fun. Please note, this can\'t be sub-divided into 13B blocks.

I was just thinking about that night in Guildford, that\'s where I drove off with the geezer still on my bonnet !! pmsl :Giggle
Oi! Stop reminiscing you two, and get back to work on the car Dave :Giggle
You can\'t even be thinking about time off in Florida until you\'ve got that car completed. We want to see it on track this year :Thumbs-up
I think someone should hold your passport until you\'ve finished to stop you getting these strange ideas about holidaying ;)

PMSL, damn you Malcolm,you\'re ok, I found out it was out of date a few weeks back. lol
Tonight we wanted to get the engine in but we still had a few problems seating the injectors but this is something that
couldn\'t be rushed as we don\'t want to have to take the engine back out to sort the problem of a leak, we dry fitted
the joins and connectors to make sure of clearances, we\'re quite chuffed with the results, the engine goes in tomorrow evening. :)
Our first idea to seat the injectors was rejected !! :D

lol, not after tonight matt, a bit frustrating to say the least.
We built the engine up and yes we DID put the engine in the car but the oil pressure sensor AND the connector at the
end of the secondary fuel rail caught on the bulkhead, the only option was to cut the bulkhead, that was the easy bit, the
pain in the arse bit will be to weld in some box section, the engine will need to be removed again for the welding. ARSE !!!!
Re-tapped the thread on the retaining nut for the sandwich plate for the oil thermostat and cooler splitter.

any idea on cost to build a car up like this?? a lot of people always want to build a race car and go racing but never realise the costs involved in just building the car, never mind actually going racing after.
i know iv spent a fair bit on my car, and its not near finished. hopefully i will be able list the cost once its done

Holy Moly !!! you sure you want to know. Including the engine and gearbox I assume ?
Yep. Engine and gear box are probably close 20k alone I\'m guessing.
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;860907Yep. Engine and gear box are probably close 20k alone I\'m guessing.
Including the drysump you\'d be right about £23k.
I think it\'s cost about £50k in parts alone.
And about another £10k in outsourced areas.
And there\'s no way to calculate the 100\'s of hours we\'ve put in ourselves though.
I\'ve got one more BIG cost coming up and thats 4-5 K for the complete AP racing brake set up.

So what cars could you have had for 65k? And would they match this one?
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;860921So what cars could you have had for 65k? And would they match this one?
As race cars go I don\'t think anything will come close with twice that money.
That\'s what I was thinking, you need to get it round too gear track, see where it sits on power lap board:D
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;860923That\'s what I was thinking, you need to get it round too gear track, see where it sits on power lap board:D
Now there\'s a thought !! :)
Email the BBC and see what they think, build or buy track weapon.
Not too much from my own personal side tonight, I decided to add split grommets to the coil pack plate just
to insulate the wires going through.
Balky & Ejo got on with fabbing the new bulkhead and tunnel, looks good, this will be welded in, tiger sealed and painted
tomorrow evening ready for the engine to go back in for the last time on Wednesday.

Tonight\'s aims were achieved, the new bulkhead was completely welded up, primered, sealed and painted, tomorrow
morning a second coat goes on, a bit more Zircotec covering to be applied and then.... then ...... then.... the engine
goes in for the very last time and we can get on with completing the fuel system.

Holy crap, I would call those fuel lines! Massive. They can feed cats to that engine ;)
Yeah, no excuses. :) Everybody wants to see that beast. And those who dont appriciate to see car in build, are morons... ;)
Fire for all, looking good:)
However, fuel lines through the car?! Tut tut, not something I would be happy with after all the trouble of building the fire wall etc. unless you\'re going to be covering them up?

It was always the plan to run the pipes through the car, it\'s race legal and nothings going to get through the stainless braiding. :)
Not too much to see whilst the wiring is being completed.
Many more updates will be coming next week.
The fuse board is nearly completed and will be fixed to the bulkhead shortly

:D Looks like this excellent project is reaching the time when there\'s slightly less to do to complete it !!
Keep up the good work Dave.
Chris
Funny enough... just made a list. :)
Got to order up all the oil hoses and fittings today together with a few
tidy up bits for the interior.
Some more conduit to finish the wiring off.
Make an expansion tank
Windscreen washer bottle and pump.
Drill the holes in the wings for the side repeaters
Buy an LED number plate lamp and housing
Refit the complete exhaust
Fit the connection fuel pipe between the bottom of the tanks and make shielding.
Make alternator bracket.
Thats todays list !! :Thumbs-up

I\'d love to say yes Grant but it\'s a fail on that one I\'m afraid, she defo won\'t be running and there is an invite
only event that he may never be asked to again at the McLaren Tech Centre.... I know.... you hate me !! :2Rolleyes

After the McLaren bash we can chill and take it slower, it WOULD be nice to be ready for TRAX in early September but will
play that one by ear. Then the pressure is off completely. :)

Cool. I find giving yourself deadlines for building cars from a shell up is a pain in the arse because their is always something that slows you down.
Are you just doing TA? Or are you going to compete in the same clas as the putts?

I agree totally !!
Steve will probably be in Euro Saloons again next year, other than TA I\'m not too sure, I may just do track days and
enjoy the car to be honest and test a few more mods that we have in the pipeline, really gearing up for the following
year for bigger and better things.
A VERY long day today, didn\'t finish till midnight.
The alternator brackets made, welded and painted ant the alternator in place.

Sis you sort a design for the kermit vinyls?
Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;863022Sis you sort a design for the kermit vinyls?
Not yet Grant, still not sure which way to go with them !! :)
I\'m starting to realise the importance of this car, it seriously wasn\'t the intention when
first starting out down the all or nothing route but it\'s starting to dawn on me.
Right tonights work gave me massive highs.... and big lows.
We completed the bodywork and I love absolutely everything (the Highs)............ except for the rear bumper...
it really sucks and doesn\'t look right at all (the lows).
These are the good sides. :)

Is it looking too low on the rear bumper ??
Anything is fixable, looks an absolute weapon :)
Shaun
I do think its hard to get different rear ends to work on an FD, I think I have only seen one that works. I think the standard rear bumper will help with showing how wide the rear end is.
Hole the show went well today
Whats so wrong with the back end mate.. Post a pic.. I don\'t recall seeing one since all the cutting and shutting with the diffuser was finished. I am sure it is not that bad. The rest of the car looks nothing short of amazing.
I agree with Grant in my experience the rear end is certainly harder to make work outside of factory. But you also need to have something to match with the rest of the kit. It\'s a tricky one.
Again, thanks for all the comments, I put the number plate on and it breaks the back up a little but still hate it.
Anyway, Gary was happily snapping away so here are a few of K-II at the McLaren show as some have asked to
see him in natural light.
And before anyone comments... the panels do fit better but I only fitted the front bumper with two 10mm bolts. lol :)

Quote from: Daz Nuke;865921Heard on the grapevine that the rear AP racing brake set up might be made into a kit for next year. Can anyone confirm this?
This kit is NOW available from BG Developments, the only thing we\'ve still to source is a different handbrake cable.
Dave
Right, got SFS to sort out the problems, just the one hose missing off these pics but it HAS been done.
Lee at SFS has to make the bottom water hoses in green but we seem to like them in black. :)
Another step closer to starting.

on charge for tomorrow. :D

Hi all,
Just taking a bit of time, we have to amend the gearbox temp sensor housing slightly so will take a few more
days, the new cooler is now on though.
In the meantime we\'ve fitted the boost solenoid and boost lines, the engine bay is now virtually finished.

Thanks Malc, dammit you\'re right, we\'ll just bring it to shows then !! :cheers lol
Right, the third geabox cooler (better quality with higher pressure rating) is on and runs up to temp nicely together
with the new oil, we\'ve sorted a few minor leaks too.
The car is now over at Horsham Developments for the corner weighting and full suspension set up.
Before I took it there yesterday we got him running on all the rotors properly and this is what happens with a
fair bit of over-fueling together with the car being up to temp at last. (bad quality vid as was on a phone)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MJQYdjAUwY
No no no, that is what happens when you own a bad ass rotary!!
Just awesome! Would be nice to have a switch to flick for a flame map! at shows!
Awesome! Nothing says better to back off than 4 foot flames if someone is at you tail ;)
cool freaking vid
So.. How did it all turn out in the end? Hope kermit is running well. I am about ready to fire mine up! Quick question if you can. What did you do about the throttle cable as I found the FD one is too short due to running the opposite way around? Did you get a universal one or does a different Mazda one fit?
Cheers
Lee
Hi Lee, Kermit is running ok but he\'s in the body shop having the rear end re-designed
with room for the large diffuser, should be about 3 weeks till road testing begins.
Because Kermit\'s engine has been pushed so far back into the bulkhead the existing
cable fitted fine into the stock position.
Dave
God news Dave,
I am surprised pushing it back made that much difference. Mine is no where near long enough! Oh well. I will sort something out!
Lee
What did you mean by it\'s running the opposite way around though Lee ?
Hi Dave,
Just saw this!
As in the cable on the FD throttle body comes in on the driverside of the engine. On the 20B throttle body it has to come around the engine and enter on the passenger side.
Mine goes to the drivers side too though.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Kermit%20II/photo_zps1315cd06.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/Sicknote301/media/Kermit%20II/photo_zps1315cd06.jpg.html)
I cannot really see in that pic.. Are you running a 20B throttle body or have you got a 13B one or modified it?
I have ordered a universal long cable to use but if I can run a proper FD one somehow it would be good to know.
Cheers
Lee
Show me your set up Lee, I\'m using the FD body I think.
Same problem with me - I guess its the left hand / right hand drive differences (as the cosmo is american?)
Also, the idle controls solenoid is on the 13b plenum, not the 20B TB, so not entirely sure about how to get a 13B on there?
I was going to keep the 20b TB and just run a longer cable, or hope it still reached.
/J
Ok, not american -so Its just the wrong way around :)
I am intrigued to see a close up of what you have Dave?
I couldn\'t see how the FD one could fit? Maybe an old 13B throttle body?
I have no pictures of it on the car close up. but near the bottom of my build page on my website //www.rspowerprojects.co.uk there are some images showing the throttle body as I remove the secondary butterflies. The throttle cable connects to the RH side as you look in the engine bay from the passenger side of the car with the idle control on the bottom. So hopefully you can figure out the orientation in the pics easy enough.
This is a truly stunning build!
Thanks \'boosted\' :)
This is the best piccy I can find at the moment Lee.
(http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x177/Sicknote301/Kermit%20II/Picture1382_zps08bbf70a.jpg) (http://s187.photobucket.com/user/Sicknote301/media/Kermit%20II/Picture1382_zps08bbf70a.jpg.html)
Are u not running a Idle control solenoid?
That way you can just stick the FD TB on there?
/J
Ahhh, yep, we have a sneaky smaller solenoid through the MoTeC. :)
lol, just how sneaky is sneaky?
Is it adjusting the timing or something?
I posted a question about this - I was looking at using the FD TB but it would need to eliminate the idle control, which I am not fussed about because it means less wiring, but was worried about the impact of this on idle.
Nice build btw - very inspiration, as is Leroys, im taking as much info from these as I can ;)
edit - Mis read your post, you do have a solenoid... is it just a case of plumbing an air line of some sort between the plenum and the intake side of the TB, then using an aftermarket one I suppose ?
/J
Holy h**l, that is shiny and green and beautiful :)
I am sure I offered up the 13B throttle body and it didn\'t go. Not a straight swap at least. 13B is 4 bolt and 20B is 3 bolt flange IIRC?
As for idle control mine will be non-functioning to start with as I don\'t have control for it on my ECU other than a spare 5v output which I may need to use to trip the fans. Although i am hoping i can use the stock set-up to control the fans via temp.
My old 13B ran with idle control just fine. The valve started dicking about so it was disconnected and idle adjusted manually to get it running right. Was fine.
More work on the diffuser and flat floor done today, not long now. :)

Thanks Malcolm, if all the running in and test days go ok than we may put her into the last two time attack days at
Silverstone and Brands Hatch as a \'one hit wonder\' entrant, basically to get inside experience of the event and if
that goes to plan we may well enter him for the complete series next year.
But there will defo be plenty of track days in the meantime to have lots of fun. :)

Although I\'m into the lux-touring mode now at age 66, this is the nicest track FD I\'ve seen. Could you post up some pictures and a summary on the Rx7club site? I think the guys there would really like to see this! Love the color. I have 9 bikes and have always hankered for one of the Green Machines. The color is the best.

Good so you on here. How is the car? Did the 3 plugs per rotor workout?

Thanks, my sick friend. I am cruising through page 2 of your build thread now. The flocked, re-designed dashboard is great. What are you going to be racing? Mostly Enzo\'s?
Heck, I almost would have re-done the whole hatch and fuel tank just to get that dual exhaust out the back so high up. There\'s a picture below of my (completely civilized) dual exhaust setup without losing my subwoofer...
Great build! :cheers

Let us know when/if you are planning to take her out on track Dave, be good to get to see her in action sometime this year.
Maybe Castle Combe............................... ;) :)
I should report you to a Moderator for that comment Malc !! hehe
Well I'm signing up for the full Time Attack season in Pro class but Castle Combe isn't on the calendar... phew !!! :)
I'll let everyone know when we're out testing. won't be long now. :)
I think he means Japfest in May, would love to see the car out on track showing as many people what a monster you have made :)
Shaun
lol, I know Shaun, providing the car doesn't need any work from the first round at Cadwell Park
then yep I'll bring her along. ;D
Looking and sounding great Dave!
Are you running any kind of filter on that inlet elbow? I am debating what to do on mine. I am not very comfortable with leaving it open.
Hiya fella, thanks for the comments, just putting a mesh over the intake connecting to the bonnet.
Hows yours coming along buddy ?

No tracktime for me at japfest this year used to everyyear bout 4 sessions but wanna see all the cars...hope you make it your motor will be crowd puller big time.
Thanks fella, I hope so, two and a half years of my life that I won't get back !! :)
:c029: Loving the look, sound, flamage (and the Audi Badge ;D)....
Really looking forward to seeing this on track Dave :cheer:
Erm.... What's with the Audi badge?
That car is just sick! Soooooo beatifull :c029:
For some reason I like that Audi badge in her nose, might be because I´m Audi fanatic ;)
A work of art, i love everything about this FD, such a lot of effort gone into this, love what you have done to the exhausts.
I don't mean to sounds like a dick.. But that badge has completely ruined the car for me aye! I hope it isn't staying there permanently. Which is a shame because the actual car and the work gone into it is mint!
Well I have to say that if a badge ruins the whole car for you it says a lot more about you than it does the build
Well said. I take it the Audi badge is a team joke?? Or is that for wen people ask "what is it?" And instead of saying an rx7 you say "it's and Audi, see it has an Audi badge"
Dave, if correct I'm told your having charging issues with a small race alternator, along with other things.
If so I went through the same problems that Brise sorted with a custom one, Jason will tell you it works fine now.
Never mind the badge, a lot of people here helped me get the race car up n running so if your having issues somebody here may be able to help,
Hope this helps

I gave my opinion on something that would obviously be controversial.. Now you're being a dick about it.. Riiight. No need to insult my character :dontknow:. Fair enough if it is a team joke. But as I said, personally I think it looks silly.
I have enjoyed following this build and I still hope to see this going flat out.
Hi guys,
Yep just a bit of silliness around the garage as we all seen to have German cars all of a sudden.
Thanks Clive, the prob was definitely the case that the Brise unit's couldn't cope with the four
fuel pumps and dropped the voltage down to such a level it was affecting the sparks through
the coils. after many hours of frustration, blood, sweat and tears we've re-designed the brackets
to take the original FD alternator and immediately we were seeing 13.7 on the digi dash so that's
how it will stay now.
Hobbawobba...... sorry if I came across harsh, we'd been working on the car for 12 hours straight
trying to sort annoying issues out and what you said was just the last straw of the day and popped
an aneurysm..... sorry. it's not on the car anymore..... honest !!! 8)
so its coming to Japfest then? :) ;) :D please i wanna see this is the flesh!
I hope so, even she doesn't get onto the track, gunna be a busy weekend though as she'll definitely
be at the Supercar Siege the next day at Leeds Castle in Kent.
Im still quite pissed because I didnt see her in RS11 last year ;) Such a stunning car, I want too it live too :P
Just gotta email from jf and release some more track time if your quick. Uber smooth surface now.....
Just set up a specific Kermit II facebook page, most of the racing updates will be on there so please add yourself
to keep appraised of all her impending races and events that she'll be attending.

Hi Japi, the bonnet ripped off and took out the windscreen and the roof !!
I managed to source a new bonnet, headlight covers and mend the roof and get
her fixed up as best as we could in 2 days, not perfect but as you can see... not too
shabby either. :)
