Title: Screamer pipe?
Post by: JayD on September 20, 2012, 06:18:14 AM
Hi guys

In the process of going single turbo with a T88..

Wondering wether I should go down the screamer pipe avenue or vent the wastegate back into the exhaust

How loud is it? Considering I already run a straight 4" pipe with no cats or silencer just back box

I guess I can always plumb it in worse case..

There has been some debate on this subject and it seems the best route is Screamer with a silencer box, Unsilenced screamers are ok for short periods of time but they will soon get on your nerves :)

I have heard a silenced Screamer go wot (was running 400hp at the time) tbh wasn\'t excessive noise, we have a Plumbed back in Wastegate and you can\'t hear it at all but i\'m told it could be loosing as much as 20% of peak power (which is shocking).

Thanks for the reply, just the kinda UFO I was after...

I\'ve never run a screamer on any car ive modded but I\'m prepared to take the plunge

When you say silencer you mean just like a miniature mid box?

My car is pretty loud at WOT so depending on how loud we are talking it might not make a blind bit of difference.

I defineatly like this silencer idea thanks buddy

Well yeh as you say might not make much diffrence to you, i have an exhaust that is Under 100db and to me Unsilenced is loud but to you might be aceptable.

What i would sugest is run a screamer but put it in a position where you can extend it in the future and fit a box if you deem in too noisy. Don\'t forget it will only open when you hit your target boost so you will be concentrating on other things :) (but they are loud usaly)

Usaly the Screamer pipe Box is just a box kinda like your Mid pipe box (if you have one) but shrunk down, so it\'s the same ID bore size as your Wastegate outlet pipe. I don\'t think its a new idea so if ou do a search there should be plenty of pics.

I wouldn\'t say acceptable more inheritated and now I think I\'ve actually become immune...

Well I guess I only stand on the loud pedal on occasion :-/ Think I\'ll try it out.

I know an F40 runs a screamer to the rear so it\'s not like something production cars don\'t manage to do legally

Appericate the response buddy

Got a screamer on mine GT4088 an easy way to imagine the noise is think of it as a foot long unsilenced exhaust as that is pretty much what it is. I\'ve no idea how loud it is in db but it is alot louder than running with the wastegate closed.

Jay, your turbo is different mate but the principles remain the same......lol

Someone did a back to back not long ago and lost 20hp from plumbed to vented

Hey Ed

Think you have your Jay\'s crossed again ;-)

I certainly do have a GT4088 to go on the manifold I got from you...
