Hi, am looking at purchasing a rx7 as a weekend car. I have been offered a 1992 type r which has done around 21k. Do the engines deteriote over time or is it mainly mileage dependant? The car in question has a 99 spec body and is in mint condition body wise, has twin coilovers and is pretty standard apart from a apexi pocket commander. It currently has no tax or mot and has a few niggles to put right, these being brake lights and front fogs not working and sitcom pump seized. What is a rough price for its current state?
Thanks
Hi ya mate!
The Rotary is just like any other cars brakes clutch suspension gearbox all need to be fully working order and any problems need to be addressed just like a piston car so lights and pumps etc need the same care and attention.
21 k is awfully low mileage and at this age i would be very careful to do some back ground checking on that such as old mot etc. If its been off the road for some time its gonna need some re commission work.
Does the engine run etc? Your better off buying a sorted running car if your not handy with the spanners as these beauties are getting old now but saying that they are well made and dont suffer rust . I have enjoyed every moment of mine but my engine has just let go and tbh probably the fault of the owner not the car due to me trying to do most things myself.
Regular servicing is key and some mechanical sympathy advised.
These are performance bargains .... I have owned some great cars and bikes. R33 GTR/GTS Evo 8 FQ300 A FEW IMPREZAS, INTEGRA ETC and my RX7 has been the best with the EVO coming in a very close 2nd. There so light and double wishbone suspension make them handle sublime.......4k would get you a very nice weekend racer.
If I was buying again, I would buy the most standard car I could.
Especially at the moment with the prices so low... they seem to be bought and modified cheaply (or just plain badly in some cases) and sold on leaving one of the new owners with a string of problems that shouldn\'t exist to solve.
Case in point...
I bought my car 11 weeks ago. It\'s spent 9 weeks off the road so far fixing other people\'s mistakes and poor work. It has a very long spec list and *should* have only needed a paint job and minor fettling to get a good working car having been advertised as recently rebuilt etc etc
Be very careful, and go in clued up. Go over everything with a fine toothcomb and be alert on the test drive. Definitely see if there are some local members with proven cars who will take you out in theirs so you know what to expect from a working vehicle in terms of performance and feel from the passenger seat.
To add, if it has a few small problems now - you don\'t know what else it might be hiding. Unless you\'re lucky enough to have found an honest seller.
I\'d love to tell you they are amazing when they work, but I haven\'t had the pleasure of owning one that does what it is supposed to as yet!

BTW I spotted your ad as well BUT I\'m after a black rex.
Where are you based in surrey roughly ?
Also speak to Martin at Speedline Imports on here, he has a very special and rare "RZ" in black and its cheap for what it is and has the rare RZ seats, if kept as it is, it will be worth a lot more money in a few years
