Hi all,
Just picked this up on the mx5nutz forum, basically its a bit of law that might soon come into effect which will rule out all modifications to cars and make any modified car illegal to use on the road. There is a simular thing already in Germany as I have found on other forums where certain German members can\'t add or modify certain parts of their car due to it automatically failing their equivilent MOT.
Here is the article:

Lots of countries have similar legislation... I think its Aus where you can\'t change a cars power to weight ratio beyond a certain level etc?
Would be difficult to enforce as it would drive 10,000s of cars off the roads... and what about classic one off specials? Kit cars etc...
Unworkable I think, although a do see a future where a modified car needs an engineers report to declare it safe. That would be reasonable in my opinion.
Yep, have just been told about this by the boss, he\'s an active member on The Ace, MMA, Rods & Sods etc....
Very sad times indeed, if and when it comes to fruition!
How the FDUK are they gonna police it though? :$

Probably just won\'t grant the car the next MOT so it can\'t be taxed or insured so therefore not allowed on the road.
Im ok with it though, ive moved away from modifying road cars, its too expensive and restrictive these days, my SV650 drag kart is coming along nicely :D
Also looks like they want to make the MOT test more intensive for older vehicles, or those that have covered a high mileage.
Thank you EU! :o
Don\'t care, like any MOT man is going to know what engine the rx4 came with. Plus any upgrade in brakes and suspension on a car actually make it safer. Roll cage means safer too. Surely they must mean visual modifications, changing bumpers etc as they are what keeps the pedestrians and other road users safe when you crash?
Surely this could only possibly work if it was for cars that are produced after the legislation comes in? Otherwise it will drive 90% of import cars off the road.
Not to mention completely devalue them. What will I do my my v8 rx7? It will be worth next to nothing. It\'s not a simple case of changing the exhaust and air filter back :)
I\'m wondering the same thing... also some cars you just can\'t get parts for anymore, therefore necessitating a car that is not 100% comparable to when it was registered.
I guess they also have to consider that lots of cars may "accidentally" get written off before any legislation came in.
Surely you would be able to register as a classic or special car. Possibly a choice on the v5?
Seems like a lot of FUD to me.
It gets to the point where we won\'t be allowed to do any work ourselves - on cars, houses, gardens - mediocracy here we come.
Anyone speak valley girl ?
In all seriousness, I do hope common sense prevails - and I like Brett\'s idea of an engineers report being required - it can only help with insurance issues with modded cards in any case, and it keeps dangerous modifications off the road....
This doesn\'t look good, how much is the modified car culture worth in the UK ?

You need to sell it to me very cheaply now whilst it\'s still worth something :Thumbs-up
Dave.
Without wishing to sound like a government official, but have you considered getting cars off the road is the exact purpose of this "law"
The Mot has already been tightened as of this year with some crazy little things, my daily failed on rubber seals going on the drop links even though there was no play in them at all! It might seem a minor part but its a labour intensive job, is it worth spending a couple of hundred quid on a car worth not much more? No, so they are hoping the only will just scrap it!
As someone mentioned above, most modified vehicles are probably so much better looked after than the scrapers i see out and about, maybe its they consider modified cars antisocial (chav element)?
Cant see it happening though, too many lively hoods rely on the market and forgetting the cars off the road, how many business will be lost overnight.
Is there no way to try and fight this or are we to late? Its worth looking into fighting it.
You only have to take a look at Goodwood and other similar meets to realise that older cars have a following even amongst those higher up in society. I think the government will probably not cow tow to Brussells on this issue, as they are going to have quite a fight on their hands. However it\'s probably a good idea to get a petition rolling just as apathy is the real killer ;)
Something similar happened in my industry and by the time we heard it was to late to stop it, i\'ve no idea how to combat such an issue but if anyone does i suggest for the sake of every enthusiast on the planet something is done very quickly.
this is interesting and also a bit comforting- http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=26260
More unelected EU officials justifying a wage basically!
Surely there\'s more pressing issues in the world today than modified cars.........:2Mad:

This practical sums up the problem with the government and police force across the uk, where there are genuinely important things (huge financial crisis, unemployment etc) they spend time working on stupid things like this. Same with the police force, gun crime and knife crime are still a massive problem... But Noooooo, can\'t have people (mosty) obeying the law with modified cars!

Its not the UK buddy, its the EU making up these ridiculous rules and regs. Such as the new laws regarding the markings on tyres, the fishery laws, human rights where we cant deport known terrorists etc
I am sure the UK gov have their own stupid things going on but most of this rubbish comes from them (the EU), they have to justify their jobs (read wage packet) some how and its a lot easier to fix something that doesnt need fixing like this modified car thing than tackle issues that actually need addressing as you say above!
With regard to the above its simple, a punishment that is enough of a deterrent to make them think twice and non of this nonsense like you had last year when a known criminal with a gun got shot and his family were baying for answers and justice! Justice was served, he had said gun, he drew it on the Police, he got shot, seems pretty straight forward to me! Too much human rights nonsense when it comes to law breakers. Live by the sword, die by the sword i once got told!
I have given up with modified road cars...kinda lol im sticking with non road legal karts :)
Well hopefully this time next year I won\'t be in the Eu, one can hope anyway.
One thing I was proud of the government for was the EU trying to abolish SED (seafarers earning deductions) and the uk told them to ram it, it would have destroyed the offshore industry and Aberdeen is just worth too much money to the uk
