Title: Mazda Montrose 13B Turbo bridge port
Post by: Brett on August 20, 2012, 09:58:57 PM
So, where to begin? I brought the Montrose in November 2008 from a nice chap called Brian, it had been in his family since it was new. Overall the car seemed to be in pretty good condition for a car built in 1979, but a closer inspection revealed some worrying rust. Based on this I made an offer, left a deposit and a few days later I collected it.
It\'s a 1979 Montrose CPE, Pillarless coupe, with an automatic 2.0L MA engine and just 47k on the clock.
During 2009 I attended a few shows with it: Brooklands, Jap Show and then finally Rotorstock. To get her ready for RS an unsilenced side exit exhaust was fitted - it sounded like hell on earth, and was laying down some very consistent 19sec runs :Giggle
Jap show (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3550/3674091579_54ae7a6e56_b.jpg)
Shortly after Rotorstock I was introduced to Jason from Super 7, and we had a little conversation about fitting a rotor into the Montrose. Before long the tape measure was out, grins were happening and hands were shaken. :Thumbs-up
We mothballed the Montrose and began the process of finding all the parts that would be needed.
This was in 2009, at the end of July 2012 we decided now was the time... we had 3 weeks until Rotorstock 9 and would need to pull out all of the stops to get the car built and MOT\'d before the 18th of August.
I\'ll let the pictures tell the next bit of the story :)
After this we got it back to the workshop and set about getting it ready for its MOT on friday the 17th August. 20mins before the MOT both the radiator and oil cooler decided to split! Queue a frantic 90mins of activity stripping an FD and an FC that belonged to Jason and we had it at the MOT station. We finally had it MOT\'d and taxed! :driving
Sadly i\'ve got no pictures from the friday night, suffice to say we worked until nearly 2am to get the car ready for Rotorstock, and inspite of a loose boost hose (my fault) and a case of overfueling we got her to the show. It was a great drive, and a great day out :)
Yesterday I took a few pics of the Montrose as it is now:
And so there she is... the result of three weeks of the most intesive labour I have ever seen. Jason, Dan and Shannon of Super 7 autos put in countless 16 hour days to get this done, our friend Darryl put in similar hours fabricating all the metal work and doing all the nessecary repairs, and my dad who at little notice was able to machine precision components for us and deliver them. Every parts supplier I used was able to get the parts to me in short order when time was running out, so thanks to MazdaRotaryparts, Drift Works and Jetex.
It\'s been one hell of a few weeks, but it was such a buzz finally getting it ready. I think Jasons face in the videos sums it all up :)
We built this not to be the fastest, not to be different, but to build something we could have a lot of fun with - and that goal has been achieved a thousand times over. I feel like its as much the guys car now as it is mine :)

Turned out to be just an issue with the breather, the excessive heat was casuing it to vapourise and condense in the wheel well, :p

What axle are you thinking of changing up too? A 9" may be too big and heavy for you, not too cheap either. Some of the ford 8" can take powers of 1,000hp these days with the right pieces, made to length.
Or you could try find an rx4 axle with the strong shafts but more chance of platting :censored::censored::censored::censored: than finding one of those

I\'m in two minds at the moment...
Tim is still running an S2/3 back end with an LSD in the purple peril - so I might be able to do something along those lines...
or
Hilux back end, which is quite common overseas
Will probably end up tubbing it in the future anyway.......
Title: Mazda Montrose 13B Turbo bridge port
Post by: Grant Monkhouse on September 11, 2012, 05:59:31 PM
There is a guy in aus that can get you better diffs for the FB axles. I got mine from him, £600 landed to my door iirc. Mini tubs would be far cooler than full tubs, cheaper tyres too and street legal

Aren\'t FB drive shafts 4 stud anyway? If not just get them welded up and re drilled. Easy done. That\'s what iv done to mine
Title: Mazda Montrose 13B Turbo bridge port
Post by: 12at on September 14, 2012, 10:04:37 PM
if a fb axle fits easiest for a upgrade would be get the Re Speed moser billet axles in 5 stud.. thats what ive got in my new project and they are apparently good for 6-700hp... Or then again i think Tim from rx motors has a stock diff but with a OS Giken lsd centre..

They\'d probably have done it anyway, the BL fanbois would have thought it was a nasty japanese thing that ruined BL because it was less rubbish than their cars. The classic European types would have been all butthurt because it wasn\'t throwing electrical tantrums every 10 minutes and the American fans wouldn\'t have understood the lack of V8.

i helped along with various engine and efi setups
originally a 13bp with weber and i set up DFI and a bypass fuel system ( with efi spec hoses for later needs )
as pictured it was 13b extend ported and a t04b with a haltech e8 and 4 x 1000 cc injectors ran around 330 rwhp at 1 bar boost] .. had some drama with a supposed pro shop twice making an awful mess of the ECU setup that had me back twice to setup the obvious .. very political .. :/
later under another owner i helped put in another extend port 13b but with t04e/66 with screamer and 12at/1600 combo with an LT10 microtech and that was 400 rwhp at 1 bar
diff was originally out of a s1 rx7 and was remodded for the trailing arm and panhard ( different to the rx7 ) so expect its your usual rx7 suspects around 1450 ish mm
might have some pics of the diff somewhere cause i ended up breaking the car down after it had a nasty accident ( and i have pics of that too but they are distressing to vintage mazda owners )

wasnt mine.. just a lot of my hard work across several owners .. so i was still annoyed.. but it gets worse
it was just the middle car on a daisy chain of disaster where i helped one bloke way too much ( for free ) and got taken a bit for being such a soft touch
he was a hazard to himself ( with his driving and his work on the cars )

So... started to get a drive train vibration... (apparently - not driven it for awhile, but my dad took it for a spin at the weekend)...gets worse with speed. Not had a chance to get underneath it yet and see whats occurred, but I reckon it could be:
Bolts come loose/out on the center bearing mount? Flange bolts loose/missing on the UJ\'s? Weld letting go on the prop adapter?
Thoughts?

Not even tried it yet - I\'m basing this from a text off my dad.. I\'m hoping it\'s a sheared/lost bolt... (I think it\'s unlikely the center prop bearing has failed - but you never know...)
Title: Mazda Montrose 13B Turbo bridge port

It could be a loose prop shaft?

Yeah - but if it\'s loose that means its started to sheer its bolts, which would be a bad thing :(

Best to go for a little drive with a passenger and determine where it\'s coming from. Get under the car and examine, it should show itself quickly if its in ba state.

What sort of propshaft is it? Could it just be objecting to the larger amounts of power you\'re throwing at it?

It should be fine - only running at 0.7bar at the moment...

Quick update.
I took it for a spin on Saturday just gone, took it gently no driving above 3k rpm etc - no vibration.
Increased to 4k rpm a bit later on the journey home, no vibration.
Got tailgated by an M5 on the way home - gave it the maximum beans... no vibration.
So no idea what my dad experienced when he took it out... something to keep an eye on though I guess.
The Montrose will be in the March edition of Practical Performance Car :Giggle

The way he built it is a story in itself, he\'s a very capable engineer and builds most of his stuff himself, he\'s built himself and engine dyno out of an old bus retarder and some oil drums.

Apparently he also runs his central heating on waste oil. Given that an oil change on a Meteor is 7 gallons or something he\'s probably got a lot kicking about.
