Title: What Gauges?
Post by: Jot17 on August 18, 2012, 03:35:38 AM
Hey,

I\'m planning on buying some gauges, I\'m going to get a boost gauge, oil temp gauge and water temp gauge, I\'m not going to be getting yet but maybe soon and I wanted to know what gauges are trust worthy and give me a reliable reading. I\'ve been looking at drift gauges they look good and are good money and haven\'t found anything wrong with them except they are hard to see on a sunny day, people have recommended autogauge but that\'s for supra\'s and I can\'t find oil temp, water temp on there website the only one I can find is boost because the ones I\'m looking for aren\'t there so I don\'t know what too look at drift gauges or auto gauges. :3Confused I want something reliable and looks good and good money for now till I get the top end ones later.

Thanks!

There are a set called prosport premium gauges the do various colours all have stepper motors in and do open and close ceremony and have lower and upper warning limits with ether sound or flash or both or non. There about £35-50. Basically the same .sa defi gauges but cheaper you can even link them so only 1 power supply needed they do all the gauges you could need even speedos and tachs.
There what I\'ve had before in my Mr2 and am doing a new dash on the fc with.

If you\'re after cheap and reasonably reliable, I wouldn\'t look any further than Autometer.

Cheap gauges are cheap for a reason.

Hi, thanks,

I\'ve looked them up on there own website and they do have what I\'m after and especially they have the warning light which is better than the ones I was on about, they look good and are cheap and trusting your word they our realiable, I might go for these but not as of yet, but otherwise they are what I\'m looking for.

Thank You!:):)

Ps. Where did you order yours from as I can only find eBay or the official site.

Hi, thanks,

I\'ve looked at the autometer gauges, they are cheap but comparing it to the prosport gauges they don\'t have the warning lights, If they do have them then I couldn\'t find them but otherwise they are good but I would pick the prosport ones instead, but thank you so much for your help.

Thank You!:):)

No they don\'t. But frankly I wouldn\'t trust prosport gauges to give me an accurate reading so the warning lights are next to useless in that respect.

Like I said, cheap gauges are cheap for a reason.

Hi,

I don\'t Know which ones I\'m going to go for now, I would buy the hks ones but they are to expensive for now, my cars completely standard except a exhaust system, the reason why I\'m looking for cheap ones for now is that at least I know my car is running alright, I\'m planning on buying a power fc which I think it tells you some off the readings that you need to know for example oil temp but I\'m not sure if it does I read it up on the net, so I\'m just planning on buying some cheap ones for now.

Thanks

I had a nice set of Omori white face gauges, although I didn\'t fit them to my car they look to be a top notch gauge, remember to get a MECHANICAL boost gauge and not an electric sort :)

Be very careful if you have a decat on the stock ECU, not worth the risk.

I know it\'s off subject but what\'s wrong with decat with stock ecu. If anything a decat is better as there is no cat to brake up block the exhaust flow and put unwanted back pressure onto the engine?

Back on subject I\'ve never had a prob with the more expensive prosport gauges. +there far better than the cheap £20 gauges you can get and some are at £55 each not exactly the cheapest even if the warnings ant 100% perfect surly there better than no warning as once you\'ve had gauges for a while you soon forget their there and start to ignore them so a semi accurate warning is better than non.

The boost creap from the easier flowing exhaust gasses will max out the stock ECU and the engine will go lean, if it goes lean it will detonate under boost which will take out the engine.

Oh ok fair enough why a chipped ecu is good then

A properly mapped ECU with fueling upgrades will have the fueling map on there to be able to cope with higher boost levels above the factory maps, as soon as you start changing things like exhausts and intakes as well as boost it would be using a different part of the map - if indeed there is a proper map there.

While on this subject... I\'m looking for a gauge like below

http://rspec.co.uk/performance-gauges/black-face-waterproof-series/52mm-clear-black-boost-gauge-bar

In PSI - Dont want all the fancy stuff just want something reliable and as OEM as possible

Any suggestions guys?

Hi,

I\'ve looked at the omori gauges only prob is I can\'t find a site that sells them except eBay, so for now still sticking to the prosport ones, and about the mechanical boost gauge, what\'s the difference (sorry if that\'s a dumb question I\'m new to this lol) the mechanical one is cheaper than the electric, which will give a better reading?

It\'s a cat-back exhaust so that should be good right?

Thank You :)

Hi,

I\'m trusting you that you\'ve had no problems with them and I have searched up about them and haven\'t read anything really bad about them except people comparing them to top end brands but people still recommend them, I\'m only getting them just to make sure my car is running ok and I can see what is going on, I read up somewhere that the rx7 water temp gauge is weighed to be in the middle and once you see it rise then that means there\'s a massive problem so I don\'t know if that\'s true but ever since I read that I wanted to get some gauges for that sake and a peace of mind.

Thank You :)
