Title: Good lord the handbrake sucks!!
Post by: ChrisL on August 11, 2012, 11:24:30 PM
Evening all.

Drifting related question:

Whilst playing out this evening, it didn\'t take every long at tall to realise how appalling my handbrake is! Barely slows the car down, let alone lock the back wheels up.

My old S13s handbrake was alright, but I really wasn\'t prepared for how poor the one in my T2 is!!

What set up do you drift boys use? Is it a case of sticking some nice new pads in, soak the handbrake mech in WD40 and try to free it up some?

Where is open this time of night for drifting? Anyhow, it seems that its probably easiest to just install a hydro, might be best to check over on driftworks, although might just be the case of your rear calipers are slightly seized causing them to be less efficient when pulling the hand brake.

Secret test track.

Thanks Mitch. I\'d hope they wouldn\'t be, cars not long been through it\'s MOT, seized calipers surely would have been a highlighted issue.

I\'ll get shopping :)

Check out Timmyc\'s build thread, he has Phil\'s drift FC now (as well as all my high end parts lol) might help you out a bit more on a drift FC build where its being done properly.

My handbrake sucks too. Always has and i\'m guessing always will. If you do figure out how to make it lock the wheels or even indeed try too please share the info :)

i have to admit - im always amazed how mine gets thru a MOT - they are pants to say the least :(

maybe a 3 foot hand brake would help to get some pressure on it :D

Mine literally just got through its MOT on the handbrake yesterday. Maybe they are just pants.

It\'s the caliper arrangement that\'s at fault... its a poor design and prone to seizing up.  A good rebuild of the rear calipers makes a night and day difference. :)

Disc brakes generally have poor performace it\'s not just the Fd. That\'s why Porsche for example still use a drum brake inside the disc hub setup on Boxters. I was looking at the rear 4 pots on an "S" and was wondering if it could be used on the Fd but spotted the drum setup.

I think earlier 180/200SX\'s hada  rear drum brake setup too another reason they were very popular for drifting.

I managed to reverse out of a parking spot in MK\'s IKEA with the handbrake on after RS yesterday (... i know, I blame the heat :o)

Hydro kit... I\'ll be adding that to "the list".
