Title: Project White Knight
Post by: Spaarks on August 07, 2012, 09:53:00 PM
Hello everyone,

Thought I would make a project thread over here aswell as having one on FD:UK, wasn\'t sure on where to start the thread as I could not find the build thread section but here goes.. :Hammer:wiggle

Had the FD since September 2011 when I bought it off a member on here, Jamieson1982, great bloke and was pleasure to do business with him.

Anyway, I\'m Sam, some of the members who reside both here and on FDUK may know me/recognize the user name. :driving:driving

Last summer I was driving one of these......

My best mate bought this.....

I went in for 10 minutes, fell in love, instantly put the Impreza up for sale.....:Giggle:Giggle

Then I set about finding a mazda. I knew that I had to take my time, do the proper research and buy a well looked after example and after 6 weeks and looking at 3/4 horrendous ebay/autotrader cars I was about to give up...... Then I found this one

Have some heritage with Mazdas...:King:driving

This is my dad, John Markey. In the mid seventies his company Arian Racing ran Mazda RX3s in the Production Saloon Car Championship.  At the same time, John and co driver David Palmer (who was head of PR at Mazda) campaigned an RX3 in the European Touring Car Championship.

Anyway, back to the FD, when I bought it - it looked like this:

And was mapped to this:

Can\'t be bothered to right out a full spec list, but it was T-78 with mild street port at 0.8 bar ~ 420 FWHP. :King

Bought one of these:

This:

Had it mapped to 1.15 bar by Mr. Hayward and the car was a complete animal, such a different car compared to before and it scared the :censored::censored::censored::censored: out of me. :evillaugh

Then I took it up the strip at street nationals...... :2Rolleyes:2Rolleyes

1st run of the day, 4th gear at 6 grand... BANG. You can see in the photo the hoards of black smoke.... :Grrr:Grrr:Grrr

So that was that, waited 9 hours for the :censored::censored::censored::censored:ing RAC to come collect me from Santa Pod and take the FD home. Not happy!!

Had no idea what caused it, was running perfectly and didn\'t really make any sense. :confused::eek

More to come..... :bandit:bandit:bandit

So what damage was done...? :Grrr:mad:

Front housing

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: .... Quite hot then.... :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Something I did notice, is that the ports are not identical on each housing, there is a fair bit of difference in the curvature and straightness on each housing :confused::confused:

And then the rotors..... :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Quite alot of damage then.... :Grrr:Grrr:Grrr

T-78 was :censored::censored::censored::censored:ed, so, bought one of these:

GT40-94r with 0.95 A/R :cool:

As the engine was out of the car and all the parts were off the block I thought I would take the time to make it look nice and pretty :p

Anyway, do not have the patience for hours of polishing, so, used some stuff called "Frost\'s Ally Clean" which got rid of all the :censored::censored::censored::censored: on the top layer, finely sanded off all the muck and crap and then with a smooth dremmel I attacked the parts.

Once they were smooth I sprayed them with some special high temperature aluminum paint and these were the results. :thumbsup::)

So, the car was taken to Carl and the boys in Newbury for a re-build. As I intend to turn this car into a time-attack FD in a couple of years when I have finished uni, I went for a full bridge port. I saw the ports on the car, they are super big and awesomely smooth, works of art.

Bought a Tial V60mm wastegate and some other sweet stuff and this is how the car sits today:

It lives. :cool::cool:

Very noisey, but I love it. :InLove

Currently running her in, can\'t wait to get it mapped. :driving:driving

That\'s all for now.

Hi mate, I have seen your car at Carls, I am glad to see you are rebuilding it dude, if it is only water seals then it will definitely be worth getting it done rather than breaking it. Very nice car, lots of lovely parts. :)

saw this when i was down at hayward, and im super jealous of how it looks. similar front and skirts to mine, but different rear end. gave me some food for thought with changing the rear slightly, especially for a monster spoiler like that!
its looking good buddy, keep up the work!

What exhaust manifold do you use with that GT40R?

Did you run into any touching issues with the frame or engine?

Same manifold as I used on the T-78, 95% sure it\'s a T4 fitment, if Carl reads this thread I am sure he will be able to confirm. There is still quite a bit of space between the turbo and the bay, fits nicely. :driving

Appreciate the kind words dude, which car was yours? :)

If you are interested in the rear bumper, gimme a shout either here or on FD:UK. It\'s for sale, but won\'t come off the car until someone is interested.

Not sure on running water injection, if it is needed then I will purchase an AEM WI kit, obviously it\'s not an issue atm as I am just running in, I sold my aquamist methanol injection kit about 2 weeks ago.

With regards to boost, I want 1.1/1.2 bar, will see what Carl says to that though... :Giggle:Giggle

Pretty sure it was my fault the car blew up anyway, when we put the new engine in - wouldn\'t fire, absolutely no fuel in the tank, had to put fuel in with a jerry can. :2Rolleyes:2Rolleyes  Won\'t be making that mistake again.

It\'s all sorted dude, 550 miles of running in done. :)

Not great in traffic or at low speeds as she falls into the brap at 1900rpm!

Awesome noise, pretty anti-social but not in a residential area that much. :)

im in sutton mate, SM1, bought 15 mins from guildford in an rx7. ive been chatting to carl this week about a bridge as mine is in there now in bits, 5-10 mpg apparently!! that scares me, with the canards and stuff on it already is terrible on fuel, i went for a slightly more aggressive port the the current streetport, you cant beat the noise yours will make though.

5-10mpg hard driving. 20mpg cruising in the motorway but who cares, the noise is great.

Yeh it\'s very loud and braps hard, idles at 1900rpm. :)

20 mpg motorway driving? No.:Nono!:Nono! Not on the base map.

Perhaps when it is properly mapped it will, I hope! :Thumbsup!

On the base map I am on running in it does 10mpg, that\'s it.
