Title: Finally found a decent FD - what type is it ?
Post by: Mart160plus on July 12, 2004, 05:05:51 PM
Afternoon one and all.

OK, after various trials and tribulations I have bought an RX-7 !  :chat

I\'ve been to the New Forest, to Aberdeen, told to walk away by the RAC man and yourselves, around the M25 several times, even looked at a Supra Twin Turbo (!!!), but I finally found the following in East Peckham, near Tonbridge, Kent.
1994 L plate, 25,000 miles (that\'s 26,000 now, I have had it two days after all), silver (Silverstone Metallic I think it\'s called?), Gold and Silver Rays Mazdaspeed alloys, lowered but not adjustable, twin Eclipse headunit, looks pretty darn new inside. First brought into the country in Dec 2002, 7.6 to 7.8 compression readings across both rotors by Rotechniks in 2002, drives beautifully. Slightly more noise in 4th gear, gearbox slightly notchy when cold, and I think the standard exhaust is clunking, not sure if it\'s the heatshield or it\'s fouling on the suspension. Time for a new exhaust at JAE I should say !! Previous owner did 3k in 2.5 years, and had a \'Mazdaspeed\' club stricker in the rear window so I don\'t know if the car is familiar to anyone.
The one question I have today is : What type is it ? The guy selling it didn\'t think it was a type R, yet it has no rear wash/wipe and only two seats. The seats are cloth, not leather. Is this a type R Gents, an R2 or something else ?

(I need to know so I can put together a spec sheet for JAE !!)

Cheers. :cheers

Nice mate well done to find very low mileage one, and you did the right thing to compression test it:)

Can\'t say what model it is though, sure somebody will know?

Have a look on Miguels web site (can\'t spell it so I won\'t try), I THINK it may have been sold by them at one point, look in the "examples sold" section.
I could be totally wrong but the car does look the same as a silver one sold.

After the nice one I nearly bought in Aberdeen to find the coolant disappearing I was planning to compression test any further one I found but as this had all the test paperwork from 18 months back I decided that should be sufficient. RAC man was very complimentary. Found out the test costs £248.95 for one of these though, they incorrectly charged me £148.95 the first time so we negotiated a medium this time around.

Where do I find Miguel\'s website Steve ??

Cheers.

It\'s a type r2
It was one of Miguels but he supplies cars for riverdale so that\'s why you may see it on his site. Enjoy:D

Hi mate :wave

First things first, lovely car bud!! You must be so happy!  You\'re bang on with the colour, mazda have released 3 different silvers (Silverstone metallic, Highlight Silver metallic & Sunlight Silver metallic) over the years, but ALL FDs from december \'91 to january \'99 were Silverstone metallic. Where do they get these names?!

As for the type, almost certainly an R2. There were a total of 6 model variations for the 2nd Version FD (08/93~03/95). I am probably going to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable than me...but i think they were Type R, Touring S, Touring X, Type R2, Type R2 Bathurst, and Type RZ.

Now, 3 of those were 2-seater - R2, R2-Bathurst, RZ. But, RZ\'s were only in Brilliant Black, and have other give-away traits - recaros, BBS wheels etc. R2 Bathurst is a possibility, but they\'re very rare, and anyone selling one would likely emphasise the fact!! :)

So i think, by process of elimination, it\'s an R2! :D

Errr looks like Brian beat me to it!! Oh well, that\'s what happens when you try to reply to posts at work and it takes 30 mins to write a paragraph! :p

But at least you know for sure now, you can take Brian\'s word as the gospel truth where FDs are concerned! :D

r2 bathurst had rear wipers and I think rear speakers to but definitely wipers. There are some other models between 93-95 but i\'m feeling lazy

 Oh man are you kidding? I counted 21 diff names and a total of 33 diff models recently...and i thought i had them all! Unbelievable.

Don\'t wanna be irritating, but could you list the ones i missed of the 2nd version matey? Whenever you get a little spare time? Cheers... :)

I\'ll forgive you for being lazy Brian, seeing as you are such an encyclopedia for these cars we are all nuts about.
Wouldn\'t mind tracing the car on Miguel\'s site though, if anyone can tell me where to find Miguel\'s site !!!
The car does have rear speakers, at least it sounds that way, I shall have to check more closely.
So the R2 is 255bhp and 0-60 in 5.5 secs ? Every website I go to seems to say something else, although that was for the 1993 onwards car, not specifically the R2. Oh, just found a site that said 239bhp and 5.2 secs, then an other with 251bhp and 4.9 secs................
Looking forward to showing you all the car at Billing anyway. Cheers for all of your input.

Silverstone Metallic R2
Happy to breath a sigh of relief at last..........

Is there an iron clad way of telling which variant you own, like E-mailing the chassis number to someone?

I sill haven\'t a clue which mine is :(

It is a UK car not an import, it\'s a black \'93 (L) it\'s got a front and rear strut brace, rear speakers, it\'s a two seater and it has a rear washer/wiper.

I\'m thinking it\'s an R2 is this correct?

Cheers guys

No it would probably be just what I describe as a UK car lol.  All the UK ones have 2 seats.

Miguel\'s site is //www.neweraimports.com.  Original UK cars had less power than the jap ones so the 239bhp is probably a UK car, I think the official UK figure was 237bhp.

Time to assemble my shopping list now, then earn the money to pay for it all.....

Thanks.
