Title: Another Nitrous Question
Post by: MintyFresh on July 12, 2004, 02:03:50 PM
Will running a dry kit of around 50bhp kill the engine?  I know extra stress kills the engine quicker but i mean will it kill it in days etc...

Also, if i was to run a wet kit, would the standard pump and injectors be able to handle the extra 50-75bhp i would hope to gain?

thanks for putting up with another nitrous question.

Have you actually spoken to anyone who has run/is running/ or has installed NOS in on a rotary yet ?

If you are running a completely standard car you might (as in you might win the lottery if you buy a ticket) have enough margin to run a 50 shot, but it is by no means certain - don\'t think anyone has been brave/stupid enough to try it.  Just run more boost instead.  Minimum you are realistically looking at is an uprated fuel system and a wet kit if you have any real hopes of it lasting beyond the first hit.

Bear in mind that practically no one in the UK runs nitrous on a turbo\'d rotary so you must consider it likely that you will kill your engine should you be a willing giunea pig.

So you haven\'t found anyone who has done it ?

I\'d like some more information, but I couldn\'t find anyone who used it

Let us know if you do, it will be really interesting to get their input

Theres no point blowing your engine up just to see if it works, someone must run it somewhere, what about Tim from RX did you try him ?

From the links posted above

Quote"Nitrous on a turbo: don’t do it if you need to ask. Even with a massively ported S5 wastegate, you’ll still experience crazy boost creep. Sorry to sound rude, but blown motors are already a problem for these things....."

Ok - good luck Minty! Personally I\'d just spend your money on other performance upgrades instead!

Ok, im doing it.  the kit is all but ordered.

Im going for a wet kit, and starting with just 25bhp and then increasing if everything seems sound.  Im also ordering a progressive controller to ease the nitrous into the engine and i hope to end with a progressive 75bhp.

On paper it all seems simple enough, the only problem could be the rumours of the rotary engine not liking big temp drops.  We will see.

wish me good luck...

I take it you didn\'t then

Let us know how you get on, but for gods sake upgrade fueling etc and get it mapped

Yep, i\'ll sort the fuelling and get an apexi power fc.

Im not gonna jump straight on the 100bhp wagon, just slowly test the system with the car.  I get a warranty on the on the system damaging the engine, so its not all bad.

Seriously ?

Thats really good, what make is the kit ?

Sorry if I\'m being obvious here but you might want to check that covers Rotaries for definite. Given the hassel plenty of people have had with warranties round here.

Its Highpower (wizards of nos).  The warranty costs £1 per bhp increase you use, so 50bhp = £50

Minty, talk to Tim @ RX motors, very much wanted to go down the nitrous route myself but got severly warned away from it, apparently rotaries do not like nitrous, someting to do with making the engines burn twice as hot!
Give them a call mate, they will be honest as they are the only ones in this country that has used nitrous to my knowledge.

I\'d love to read the T&C\'s on that

twice as hot? exactly the opposite of what i would expect.

Trev at Highpower says he worked on the quickest recorded uk rex a few years back, and although it was obviously modified he said it had no problems dealing with nitrous.

Its all gonna come down to giving it a go.  I will try to get hold of Tim but at the end of theres not enough information on the subject and the only way to know for sure is to do it.

My brother has also ordered a kit for his BMW MIni Cooper, his is direct port injection and we are going to have a large bottle stashed away so theres not far to go to refill.

NOS works, and works extremely well on a rotary - when it is done right (like most things!).

Do a search also, there are some good threads from memory on NOS (on our forum).

Biggest problem you will have is the tuning, ultimate way is to use an aftermarket ecu to do the whole lot (like a MoTeC).

To do the fuel system properly will cost you more than the NOS kit itself.

Please keep us up to date on how you go!

What you do is have the nitrous point backwards out of the rear of the car.  Then when you want the boost, you crank open the bottle, and it squirts Nitrous out of the back of the car.  The force of the jet will be enough to rocket the car down the track.  You do need to be careful tho - it\'s the same method the baddy in Moonraker used to control the rotation of his space hideaway, and that was enormous!

You have been warned.

You\'re thinking about intake temps, which will be reduced, but the combustion temperatures will go up - odds are you are going to need cooler plugs before you reach a 75 shot.

I was going to be running 75 on my car had it not gone pop before we got that far, just fortunate the kit hadn\'t turned up when the engine decided enough was enough.  I was simply going to use it for 1/4 mile runs and nothing more.

As others have said get hold of the T&C for the warranty, I will be amazed if it covers more than just parts and ultimately labour is a fair percentage of an engine rebuild when you take into account the time required to get it in/out of the car along with the rebuild process itself.

Be sure and check your insurance company will allow it on your car - Aon told me that was the one mod they wouldn\'t cover on an FD.  Even if your insurers do cover it your premium will probably go through the roof as gains will be well above the jet rating - even 25 should result in 40+bhp from what I could find.

Also bear in mind that even if you are running a PFC you are going to have to retard the timing to run more than the smallest amount of nitrous, it\'s up to you whether you run the car the whole time on it\'s retarded setting, or get an add-on that will retard the timing when the nitrous is on.

As a final thought - Steve Kahn regarded as the best FD mapper in the US can\'t get his car to run nitrous in 4th gear, first 3 fine, but not in fourth.

i thought because of the cooler intake temps you dont have to change the timing?

FYI,

I noticed this in passing the other day. This unit will retard your ignition based on nitrous, boost etc.

I was thinking of getting the cheaper version as more armour in the det prevention war.

With nitrous be prepared for lots of boost,as your boost control will become non existent. My engine had a tiny standard turbo, even that gave 20 psi with nitrous. You need LOTS of fuel, and a strong engine.

Very good write up, to go along with what Tim says boost creep will be massive and a std engine no chance

I decided to go against nitrous right now.  im going to sort the looks and handling, and then when the engine needs a rebuild get it built specially for the mods  i have planned.

Don\'t want to say too much (but I have had a large scotch!) :)

I know of someone that is hoping to achieve around 800hp from a standard 13B non-turbo engine using NOS.

Say no more......... :rollin

We\'ll see eh :)

Puerto Rican\'s have been running 7\'s for a while - don\'t see why others can\'t do it with no turbo!

surely a 13b non-turbo is a bit underpowered???

remember, i know nothing.

I don\'t think so, guys I know doing this doubled the hp of a standard engine without too much hassle at all.

If you get all the flow rates/pressures correct then the sky is the limit.  Rotary is great too in that it goes round rather than up and down.  For my simple understanding makes it better for nos.
