Hello, just joined the forum last night after much lurking. Thinking of getting an rx7 as my next car, at the moment I have an mx5 which is ok but seriously lacks power, handling is great but everything else it lacks. Been riding motorbikes more than cars generally as insurance was always a big obstacle, Insurance on a Ninja 750 is cheaper than tax on most cars a year.
However I am now getting old thus insurance is more manageable. Other cars I have looked at are s2000, rx8 and silvia\'s, generally rwd cars that are fun and have some poke.
At the moment its between an s2000 and rx7 but both have pro\'s and cons, s2000 is far more expensive to insure but is a drop top and reliability is near perfect. Rx7 is cheaper to insure and has more prospects for upgrades and are far more rarer, only thing I\'m worried about is reliability, no doubt lots of people talk about the engine breaking. I have one friend who owned an FD who\'s engine went pop twice within a space of a year or so and a friend with an rx8 which has now died.
Just how bad is the reliability of an rx7 engine and are there any ways to prevent it from breaking. I am quite handy with a wrench and often strip down my bikes and do all the work myself so would be looking at doing the work myself depending on how difficult it is.
As for budget I am aiming for around £4000 and aiming for a relatively stock rx7 FD, well at least bodywork wise. Is this budget sufficient? this is what I will have roughly free to spend after selling the mx5.
any help would be appreciated.
£4k would get you a nice standard car, maybe with a rebuilt engine, if you look around.
Just make sure you go and have a good look around, under and over it thoroughly. If its had work done then ask for receipts.
Things can and do go wrong with these cars just as much as they do with any other sports car of their age, but if you look after it then generally they look after you. Theres plenty a good folk on here and else where that will offer advice and even lend their time if you have troubles.
They are great cars and once bitten by them it\'s hard to give up and even people who do go elsewhere for their fun do often come back to the rotor motor :D

I have my FC3S up for sale if you are wanting something more affordable, it will be more solid and more reliable than an FD of the same value, let me know what you think.
