Title: Engine rebuilt? Running on one rotor!!
Post by: JTW86 on June 11, 2012, 09:58:47 PM
Was sort out the FC today, bleed the clutch & brakes.
Starts up first time no problem, let the car warm up and took it for a lil drive.
Ran like a dream!
Parked up switched it off to give the car a wash.
After an hour, started the car up and let it warm up, as I was reversing the car I stalled at first, started it back up but its a lot hard to start and it sounds really rough! It\'s started to run on one rotor I noticed!
Checked the coil packs, looks fine and there\'s power, gave the plugs a good clean. Started it up again and it\'s the same!
I dont have a compression test ATM...
Not sure which rotor is not working.
Sounds like I lost compression in one rotor tho...
Or could it be something else?!

If you take out the EGI fuse in the engine bay, remove the bottom plugs, and then crank the engine over with the throttle down, you can listen for the compression pulses - should here 3 even pulses from each rotor, you can pop one or other bottom plugs back if it\'s not obvious which rotor has lost compression - if you are hearing even pulses all round, then you\'ve a different problem.

I\'ll have a go at that tomorrow after work.
If its not the compression (crosses fingers) what else could it be?
Any ideas?

HT leads are on the correct plugs? But might just be slightly flooded, try and de flood with the use of the EGI fuse and report back :)

Yeh pretty sure the HT leads are on the correct way as it should be.
I don\'t think it\'s flooded? I\'ve started it up quite a few times trying to figure out what\'s wrong but I\'ll have a go tomorrow at trying to deflood it with the egi fuse out tomorrow.

How long did you let it \'warm up\' for though?

Just till around 80-90degrees, I\'ve got defo gauges installed.
It defo didn\'t overheat.

The compression pulses should sound like a thwopp, particularly if you hand crank it slowly - and if it\'s even slightly flooded, there will be a lot of vapour out of the hole - that\'s normal ;)

If the compression is good and you\'ve got spark (at the spark plug end, as the plugs can crack inside leading to a internal short) then the next most likely is fuelling.  I had a secondary injector fail \'on\' which basically meant it swamped one rotor and it wouldn\'t fire.  I honestly thought I\'d blown the engine, when in fact it was just washing out.

If that\'s happened, apart from the obvious of replacing the injector and de flooding it, you\'ll need to do an oil change, as the fuel washes into the oil thinning it out.  I could smell the fuel in my case,  but if the injector is just fueling too much it may still prevent firing at low rpm / starting and so give the same impression.  In that instamce, de flooding it may get it started on both rotors and a good run clear it out, but if you have lost compression you don\'t want to be running the engine a lot - so check that first.
