Title: Ferrari Museum visit - Maranello
Post by: Ada7 on June 07, 2012, 11:21:30 AM
Mark, one of the mods on FDUK, got married the other week to his lovely girlfriend Carla. Hannah and myself, along with a few other lucky :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored::censored:s, were asked to join them and go all the way to Italy to spend a week in the sun (and sometimes rain) and celebrate the big day with them.

We stayed in an amazing place about an hours drive from Florance so the countryside, town and villages all around were all stunning to see and walk around.

Soaking in the history and beauty of Florance, Siena, Pisa (just the walled town as the rest is not nice really) and other medieval villages was just increadible and time i\'ll never forget. The 1400 photos i took will help with that :D and i will bore you later on with some of those

But you can only have so much of the past and with a day spare to do something different a few of us guys (myself, Steve aka \'The Hawk\' and Andy G) decided to take a bit of a drive through the mountains and make a pilgrimage to the home of Enzo Ferrari.... Maranello, home to the Ferrari factory and museum.

From where we were staying it took 2 and a half hours to get there along the toll roads going through all the mountain tunnels. Each time we went through one i\'m sure we were all thinking the same thing, that we wished we were driving our own FDs right then. The noise would of been great.

As soon as we pulled in to the town it was like Ferrari heaven. The first car we saw on the road was a new Calafornia being put throuh its paces. It looked and sounded great and I want one!

We parked up outside the museum and got out of our lovely Fiat only to be accosted by a group of guys and girls from different companies trying to sell you a test drive in a car. \'Only\' 60 Euros would have got you a 10km drive in a 430 (the cheapest car there). 100 Euros would have got you a Lamboghini Gallardo 200 Euros a 458 and a whoping 300 Euros would have got you the big boy, a brand new lambo Aventador. Now i wasn\'t willing to spend that on a 10km drive, even thorough we were told we could do any speeds we liked as they have an argreement with the local Police and it would be recorded in HD for us to keep afterwards. All i wan\'t to know was if i fitted in a Lambo just incase my numbers ever come up. So i asked one of the guys (he spoke very good English) if he thought i would. He looked me up and down for a while and simply said \'no, sorry\'. Well that was that then.... or was it. More on that later. On to the museum.

The entrance to the promised land :D

You walk straight into the gift shop which was full of all the normal shirts, hats jackets and other memabilia you can get everywhere else. We got our tickets and proceded into the museum itself. Here we go...

First to greet you is a 500 F2. 185bhp in 1951 with a 4 cylinder 2 litre engine. Alberto Ascari, winner of 13 races looks on

2 euros got you a ride in an F1 car, and no we didn\'t try it out :p
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9192.jpg)

The ground floor was splint into 2 halfs. One side was road/race cars and the other older F1 and other track cars.

No luxuries here.

A few years on gave us the 1951 166 F2.

Next up was a glorious 250GT competizone. I love this era of Ferrari\'s and this was a stunning example.

Behind this was a 250GT Tour de France. This, and some other cars on show, was owned by a Brit, we spoted a UK tax disc on 2 or 3 cars.

Next up was the first of a few 1 off cars. The 250GT Drogo or \'Breadvan\'. This car was built by a designer and race team owner after Enzo Ferrari had refused to sell him a 250 GTO. This was another UK car and even had goodwood show stickers down its side
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9216.jpg)

Seperating the 2 halfs of the ground floor was a selection of F1 engines dating back to the early 90s

Works of art i\'m sure you\'ll agree. I was surprised at how small an F1 clutch is considering the power it has to deal with
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9231.jpg)

Over the other side of this floor was some older F1 and prototpye cars and a mock up garage with a dismantaled car. Not much to them when you see one like this
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9235.jpg)

At the front of the queue was the awesome and quiet frankly massive 599 XX. A really beast of a thing. 750hp from its 6 cylinder V12. Yum!

Behind were a couple of older F1 cars which sadly i didn\'t really pay much attention too. They deserved better from me but i was distracted by everything else on show. My bad, sorry
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9243.jpg)

How\'s about this, models of every years F1 race car
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9245.jpg)

At the back of the queue was a 512 M from the early 70s. Only car i\'ve ever seen with a roof mirror!

On the next level there was a lovely Enzo. One of the 399 that were made, this one looked like it had never seen a road in its life.
Not really my favorate of Ferraris and compared to others here really didn\'t stand out much, odd when you consider what it can do
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9268.jpg)

Here there was also lots of history stuff about the factory and its growth as well as other tasty parts to feast your eyes apon

Apparently this is a cylinder head... I have no idea what this does
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9304.jpg)

Behind this area was another room dedicated to F1. They had the last 8 cars on display as well as loads of trophes and other bits and pieces
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9277.jpg)

One of a few very rare Ferrari lunges :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9295.jpg)

Ok, up to the top floor now and this felt a lot more open. A mixture again of new and old. All amazingly well kept examples.

Why Ferrari FF dash on the wall.... Because Ferrari!

When i first saw this car i thought \'they got a Ford Pop in here\' (ask your dad) but when i got close it turns out its a 166 Aerlux. No, i\'ve never either! 2 litre V12, can\'t ask more than taht from a small car
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9311.jpg)

They even had drift style gear knobs in the late 40s :p
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9315.jpg)

Next up for me was probably the best car of the day for me. A truely stunning 275 GTB4! Just look at those curves. Glorious in every way
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9317.jpg)

Then there was the only none Ferrari there. The Dino doens\'t have any Ferrari badges on it, apart form on the air filter apparently.

Behind these 3 were a few more race engines. 1000hp twin turbo V6 and its only a tiny 1.5litres!! Bonkers
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9323.jpg)

Only the second ever GTO model next. The 288 GTO. Some say that this is the for runner to the F40, V8 twin turbo lovelyness
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9332.jpg)

For some this is \'the\' Ferrari. The 201mph F40. So light that a strong gust of wind could blow it away. Again though i was so busy admiring it that i forgot to take pictures. :o
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9336.jpg)

Final 2 in this room where the newest of the lot. A 458 Italia and the first 4 wheel drive Ferrari, the FF.

Big brakes are a must on something this powerful
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9346.jpg)

Up close these new cars, as well as the 599 are really big but still beautiful machines, but no matter how hard you try someone always gets in the way when your trying to take a picture
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9349.jpg)

Open center looking down on the floor below
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9347.jpg)

The final room had a few oddities in it. First up was a couple of wind test models, one of which was for the new 599
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9354.jpg)

The had a driver training machine used to help them build up their neck muscles. Looked more like a torture device to me
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9358.jpg)

The last couple of cars seemed at first to be a bit of a disappointment (if a Ferrari can ever be such a thing). \'Just\' a 599 and a 430. I nearly didn\'t even bother taken pictures but then something odd caught my eye.

The double rounded top of the 430 windscreen, the tweed interior and strange rear section. This is another 1 off car designed for Pininfarina as a wedding gift. A 430

Lastly, what i thought was a \'just\' a 599 was infact a SA Aperta, basically a 599 targa top.

So that was it really. No more cars to drool over so we decided to pick our own favorate and take a cheesy picture next to it.

I went for the 275 GTB4

and Mr G went for this little curvy number...

.. but really he loved the 250GT Tour de France
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Italy%202012/Ferrari%20Museum/IMG_9388.jpg)

So apart from one last look through the gift shop that was the end of the museum tour... but not the whole day out, but more of that little story later in part 2. Its late and i\'m knackered (I wrote this all out and saved it last night) :D

Massive thanks for Andy and Steve for making this a fun day out and for Andy driving us there and back. We did have a good giggle :D

Anyway, Thanks for listening and dont forget to tip your waitress

Part 2

After spending a few hours drooling over the cars we were all now a little hungry and dehydrated. Being in Italy its not hard to find a friendly pizziaria to grab a bite to eat. On the way over to one we had to pass a couple of the companies that were offereing the test drives.

Outside in the sun the modern cars they had looked amazing. A nice selection of Ferraris and couple of Lambos, one being the massive mighty Aventador

These really did get driven, and driven hard too. While we were looking over these cars someone was puttinng a 458 through its paces and making a glorious noise in the process

I managed to get chatting again to the same lad i\'d spoken to before and again said i\'d just love to have a sit on a Lambo. He kinda looked put off a little (he must get asked this all the time) be whether it was a sense of pity he felt for me because of my freakish size or maybe wonder ment if i actually would fit, he went and had a quick work with another guy, maybe his boss and he called me over and open up the Gallardo to me to set me self into :D

And gracefully exiting :p

I\'m sure Steve will come along soon and show the other side to the picture :o
As to where i fitted.... i sure did. I was only as tight as my FD, in fact the FD has more head room. I know some of you have owned, driven and had these cars in your lifes on a regular bases but for me this really was cool and something i\'ll remember for a long time. I really didn\'t want to gte out of it.

So thats it all really, except on the way home we had to find the old entrance to the factory

Gift store the size of a local Tescos

And finally (honest, i know you\'re all bored to death of me going on now).... the big boy on the road

Well done for picking the 275 over all the carbon fibre moderns....my favourite too, unless perhaps a 330 GTC or a P4 had my name on it.  I doubt I\'ll ever have to choose so thanks for the pictures.
