Hi, I have wanted one for ten years and I have bought what I think is a really nice one, some of you may recognize it -
http://carsandcoolstuff.com/friends-cars/re-amemiya-mazda-rx-7-fd3s-turbo-d1-drift-car/
I have had Subaru`s, Mitsi`s and a Porsche in the past, hopefully you guys can help me get the best from this latest one :Thumbs-up
Welcome mate. You have certainly picked a nice car. Look forwards to seeing you at some of the club meets.
welcome to mrc , awesome car:Thumbs-up

Awesome car.
Come to Japshow!
Where abouts are you from?
Take a look at www.fduk.org/forum (http://www.fduk.org/forum) and register there, around 40 ish FDs are going to Japshow from there :driving
Welcome dude... you bought yourself a stunning car... well looked after by its previous owner... I seen this quite a few time and i am glad that Alex managed to sell it to an owner thats joined the club.
So i guess one question should be where in the UK is it now loving? hopefully not too far from London
Hi, thanks for the kind comments - hopefully I can look after it nicely and add to it sensibly, my GTO had carbon doors, plastic windows, cage etc and weight reduction is always something I think about but Alex has the handling and holding so sorted I dare not touch it in anyway for fear of messing it up, might just have to leave it but as you guys know that is easier said than done.
I will come to Japshow and thanks for the invite, I intend to do a few events maybe Rotorstock/God of the Pod - I am based in Surrey, got the Garage rented today and Insurance from Adrian Flux which I was shocked at as it was under a grand and I am 31 years old.
I have actually been feeling a little sick about this purchase over the last few days because truth be told I really cannot afford it and my missus will go mental if she finds out, I have a speed addiction which means I will probably never pay off my mortgage - I saw Alex`s motor and cursed myself for going to see it as I just thought "must have" when I first saw it, then he took me out in it and "demonstrated" it and I was so shocked by the grip in the wet, all my cars have been AWD and I thought we`d die in the wet with RWD but that thing was soo glued - my Subaru spins the rears in 3rd in similar conditions.
Hopefully I wont lose much money on the car if I need to sell it, I started my own business in January and I haven\'t got a full understanding of tax accounting etc so hopefully I wont have a situation in the future when I am forced to sell the car at a major loss, anyway enough of my concerns I intend to have a great time in this Car and hope to meet up this Summer. thanks : )
Always liked this car, well done on the purchase :3gears-lh
Yep I love that car.... Please please don\'t change it dude it\'s one of a kind all be it a replica
But being a RE-Amemiya slut it just appeals
Oh and don\'t brake it dude... You should pop along to out south east rotary meeting it\'s a little drive being near Dartford but man it gives you chance to drive the beast.
Details in the events section dude...
Remember keep that baby safe

thanks, I agree - I will never break the car nor change the exterior appearance, some modded cars are worth more in bits but this is not one of them.
The only stuff I have thought about are as follows -
Cage
Makrolon Windows (look oem)
GRP Doors and rear hatch (subject to costs of obtaining another set of stickers/paint and the effect of weight reduction on handling and set up)
Larger intercooler/Rad/Boost controller - SW Hayward today and they believe it could make 450bhp at 1.2 bar with the extra cooling
Shortshifter
Flat bottom steering wheel so I can actually get in (im tall)
Arm rest console pad
Anything I can see that might make it look more like the actual original car (wing mirrors/missing stickers etc)
Anything else you guys suggest?
Thanks
Holy crap. :) Didnt know that it is for sale. I wonder how much did cost... ;)
Anyways, awesome car. :) On down side, that car is featured so many magazines and tv ;)

I tried to negotiate the price but it was a little pointless, he didnt need or want to sell it so he refused my offers and I pretty much paid full price from it, there was no way I could walk away from it. It was not advertised on Autotrader, ebay or Pistonheads so it did not show up in the searches I have been doing.
15k. Your kidding,

a little less, why? you think too much? I have been looking globally for months/years and there is nothing else like it for the price.
Thanks
I think your planned additions should be subtle and should not detract from the overall look... Nit sure about the lightweight doors though... I have heard the standard FD Chassis is not the stiffest and I suspect that the doors may play a part in the overall body rigidity (not an FD expert so I may be wrong)

I agree, keep the look, it wont be easy to improve the car and in all likelihood I will simply do the windows, cooling mods, boost up and brakes, I think I will still go for a dash dodger type bolt in cage though.
thanks
Welcome, top FD with alot more spent on it too, over the years, njoy :)

Welcome to the club. Great looking car you\'ve got there and has been very well looked after. Where abouts in Surrey are you based?
It would be a great Re Amemiya replica if it hadn\'t been fitted with a FEED copy bodykit :Hammer

Thanks Phil, thats what I figured - the engine alone was a 13k rebuild so for me to pay 14k for the whole car is still good value imo, I paid 28k for my Porsche that was slow and I got a 5k bill for a new gearbox when I tried to drive it hard, if I bought a brand new car it would leak value hugely.

thanks, are you saying it has the wrong kit on it?
I am based in Banstead, Surrey.
No i\'m not say it has the wrong kit, unless you say its a replica of a Re Amemyia car. The only part i can see that look like Re Amemyia on it are the rear light cover and maybe the rear wing. The fact that it been painted in the same colour as an old Re A drift car make people think its a replica.
Here\'s what the original looks like

right, I geuss thats another job to do then - no point having a replica that isnt an exact replica, I do prefer the look of Alex`s Car though, especially the wheels I feel are an improvement over those on the original. Guildford meet would work for me, thanks
just looking at the pics, think Alex`s car looks better than the original, I wont change the look in anyway.
If you like it then keep it how it is. Its all about personal taste when it comes to modding car. What one person may like, another my hate. I just thought you\'d like to know whats what with the parts on the car thats all.
To be fair, i\'d leave it how it is now. Not may people realise the difference with bodykits in or out of the rotary scene so i wouldn\'t worry about it. Save you money for fuel and other goodies for it later on
Adam
Yes welcome to the club rob lol at the coments thanks guys !

thats a good idea, I sent out a mass email to around 200 organisations earlier this week, promo firms, car shows, and all the firms whose stickers are featured on the car, maybe they will get in touch. think it need a starter motor, sw hayward today after I had to get the AA out to start it, the spark isnt that strong battery or starter motor and I flooded the engine trying to start it, the aa guy took out the relay and somehow got it started, need to be able to start it on the key first time though so it will got into hayward for new s motor as advised today, took out in the dry today for the first dry run, it is very very fast, definately needs a brake upgrade, got pulled by the cops for not having a front numberplate - £60 quid fine, 60 quid to fill it up, another lump of cash up in smoke but it was a laugh, got a "wanker" sign from one hater as I was rolling along in a residential
Thanks
Hi, I need some advice on this, had a nightmare of a weekend with this Car, it was running fine on Thursday, I was able to start it up OK for the first time - It is a little reluctant to start and you only get a few attempts as it has a racing battery on it, if you mess it up with too much of the gas pedal then it floods the engine, then I was trying to deflood (remove relay, turnover etc) and the battery was getting drained from deflooding and then would not start, by the time I got booster cables out etc the engine was flooded, also it was :censored::censored::censored::censored:ing with rain in the midlands (went back to parents for dad`s day) and trying to deflood and start it up in the rain it just wouldnt catch, think it was the flooded engine and damp air, it was coughing but would not start - usually on around the 4th cough you can add a little bit of gas and it kicks in to life but not this time, I had the AA out to start it on weds for this same issue, the guy pulled out the relay, deflooded and it was sorted, then it wouldnt start on Saturday night as I was trying to leave my parents place at around midnight for the trip back down to london, I had been trying it all saturday daytime, deflood procedure and battery jump/charge up but no joy, when I arrived on Friday night I was locked out of my parents place so I drove around the area slowly to kill time, this included a fee start/stops to get fuel and food - was this the issue? I think I am doing something wrong with this car, I think it is more user error so I need to know how to live with this car, it has properly done my head in this weekend - came back from the midlands on an AA flatbed, called AA at midnight, got home at 5;30am this morning having slept in the back of an AA truck for just a few hours after an hour of trying to start the car with the AA guy at 2am in the rain - it was truly miserable. Car is now in the lockup dead as, might try removing spark plugs etc next saturday but to be honest I have better things to do with my time, can you tell me how to operate this car so that I can get on with it please? i read about a fuel cut off switch? I noticed the builder/previous owner blipped the throttle prior to shut off - to get rid of excess fuel to assist starting? what about an upgrade to an rx8 starter motor? I like the car and since it definitely wont sell unless I can start it I do need to get this sorted, if it sells this needs doing and if I cant sell it then I need to be able to use it, I feel like I have been a nuisance at hayward rotary recently with newb questions, any info relating to help on the above matters would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Best course of action-
Put new plugs in, charge battery and try again
I always used to have a good battery, regularly changed plugs and never had a problem
My latest car, bad plugs, kept flooding, new plugs...been fine since
Right mate! deep breath and relax! Ive only had mine 3 years and my first year your brimming with q\'s and you flood it etc and thinks its blown up etc etc .what thats noise whats this bit etc etc. Everything about a piston engine still counts....clutch alternator steering radiator etc still counts so i.e race battery would go flat on a skyline...key to a rotary is low compression once started not to be turned off til warm and revved to red line once warm at least once but NOT til warm!
Right if you start it dont shut it off unless its cold, if you really have to hold revs at 4000 rpm then turn key off this means the excess fuel is pushed out the engine. If its flooded then really need a spare set of plugs to get going or at least AA man gets it to catch good long drive and some nice big revs.
I find good practice is to depress clutch when starting and with a race battery they are 1yr items at best and tbh 2 starts max and at least 30 mins to recharge what you have taken out...... may be worth if not got a jump pack replace battery with an ordinary 063?
As for getting the sailor sailor LOL! just a jealous hater.....these cars have a habit of getting under your skin.........keep the faith cars a legend!
And the rewards when it flyin is like no other boost at 3000 and 5000 revs of fun!
"edit" dont shut off til HOT.

Ok thanks for your positive comments, I had a great time driving the car to hayward on Friday last week, v quick car and good fun, will preserver but will try and find any mods to make it more "daily driveable" - shocked at the fuel it used on the way from my place to my parents (150 miles) - a whole tank at 75 quid, ouch, been looking at brewing my own ethanol at home and perhaps a conversion to run on alcohol cheaply produced, even two tanks a month would save you a serious amount. Will get some new plugs, drain, fit plugs and charge battery, will get a jump start too - part of the problem is that it gets stored for a few days, you try and start it with a slightly low battery which means it struggles, by the time its been tried a few times there is no charge to start and also too much fuel, it needs big amps first time before it floods I think, thanks for your help : )
Dont go from underneath, take off the intake elbow, shiny silver I\'m guessing on this car
You\'re welcome to ring me, and I can take you through it when you\'re in front of the car, probably much easier- 07941508512

all depends on how much your on the loud pedal!!:3gears-rh:3gears-rh:3gears-rh:3gears-rh:3gears-rh mines only moderate and ive had less when hooning! ;)
I can get to santapod and back and drag race it just on a tank of fuel from Bristol.
Perhaps its running way to rich hence poor fuel consumption and why it keeps flooding. (just a thought)

It was a spirited run, not wise to quote figs online but I was not doing 70 mph the whole way, I have had the car a week and I was travelling on an empty road during the England footie match so it was a quick run

I know it has a fairly serious fuel system on it so yeh it could be over fueling I dont know, my understanding is that it has been worked on by hayward and mapped on surrey RR so hopefully all is in order, im going to leave it with HR for a bit,get it checked over and see if they can do anything to make it more numpty friendly in relation to the previously mentioned challenges.
No hayward s worked on it hawards mapped it its not over fueling surrey rolling road only dyno tested it and they said it was running lean ! but that was probably down to a vacum pipe left undone its now replaced. like i said when you bought the car if you wanted to use it alot on the road ditch the race battery .
and yes everything is in order carl spent ages sorting that car and it was fine when i sold it !

Thanks, I didnt see you having any starting problems with it which is why I think its my operation rather than a fault with the car - I am going to clean plugs and deflood this weekend and then try to avoid short slow journeys in future, will also try blipping the throttle before I cut it off, I would like to fit a fuel cut off and battery cut off switches to it, the battery will drain slightly as its stored during the week and the weaker charge gives you only 1-2 chances to get the start up right when I try and start it at the weekend. I really dont want to fit a standard battery in the back, might just have to dig deep and get one of those really expensive race battery`s. Regarding the fuel use, I dont know whats right and whats wrong with these cars, 150 miles on a tank seems pretty serious but then I was going fast the whole way, that sort of consumption is going to see the car staying in the garage more though which is a shame.
started trying to deflood it today, it wont so much as cough with a fresh charged batter so clearly flooded, removed EGI and cranked sooooo many times now so I started the process to remove the plugs today, took me a few hours to get the strutt brace off as it wouldnt come loose without the car being jacked up, had to mess around at the local tip getting planks/boards cos I couldnt slide a jack under the car and took me a long time to push the car up onto 1 inch thick boards - jack slid under, took the weight off the front wheels and the brace came off (its a tight fit on the coilover top mount bolts) - got the intake off and got my first look at the plugs, took about three hours to get to this point and I didnt like the look of all the stuff on top of the plugs so I called it a day and will have to resume the work in two weeks time when I next have a saturday off, considering the plugs need to come out regularly they could have made them a bit easier to get to, hopefully once I can get the rest of the stuff off I can get the plugs out, turn it over and hopefully it will start, saw this guide which was pretty usefull, could see a how to remove plugs guide on MRC http://www.fd3s.net/ignition_install.html
Dont leave it flooded. Get the plugs out and also I would get
Edd rx7 parts to come to you and carry out a compression test.
This would eliminate poor compression causing flooding issues

thanks, i thought comp tests were usually for old worn engines? this one is new so compression should be fine no? thanks
not neccesarily. New engines can sometimes have poor compression.
Quote from: lee mills;827222not neccesarily. New engines can sometimes have poor compression.
ok, i will ask carl at hayward if this is the problem if thats what you think, thanks
Not saying thats the problem just letting you know that poor compression isnt always just for old engines.
I think the point that he was trying to make is that regular flooding can be a sign of poor compression so a test would either rule it in or out, ie just trying to help with ideas:Thumbs-up
^^^^^^^^ as lee said. It\'s a cheap elimination, independent test.

ok thanks, ideas are appreciated - would a comp test be high up on the list of stuff to check for a flooded engine? i should turn it over with the plugs out first right? surely a comp test on an engine i know to have been recently built by a reputable builder would come after the first steps such as plugs out, oil in plug holes etc? thanks for your help, if you think a comp test is the next thing i should try after cranking with egi removed then please let me know, thanks.

very kind of you, thanks alot - think i will try with plugs out first and then start comp test, from what i have read it seems plugs out would be the next step.
will let you know if i need to borrow it if/when it doesnt start after turning over with plugs out, thanks
I think your missing the point a bit (meant in a nice way:o)
Taking the plugs out etc will deflood the car but isnt solving why the car keeps flooding.
My guess judging by what youve written is that your map is to rich, obviously that,s assuming that your compression results are ok.

sorry just a little confused, it has flooded twice - several short/slow journeys are to blame i beleive as this was the pattern of driving prior to the breakdowns, have spoken with carl hayward last week who built and mapped the car last and he says it has no problems, i dont want to ignore this advice and spend lots of time looking for possible engine problems that according to carl and previous owner do not exist if its simply a case of user error related flooding which could be fixed by the normal deflood process, thanks
Whilst i agree with you to an extent as in not looking for problems that dont exist however there is a problem however large or small as you shouldnt need to deflood your car on a regular basis unless you keep turning it off before your up to full temps.

thanks, i am 90% certain it a user error issue, it was started/stopped twice when it was last running and both short journeys, think i have done exactly that - short journeys at low speed and shut off before up to temp, just need to deflood it and it should be fine as i am fairly sure nothing is wrong with the map or engine as i have seen the car running and started without issue by the previous owner, i wil try plugs out etc and if that doesnt work will pursue the lines of enquiry that you have suggested, thank you for the ideas :)
Just as a comparison I do short journeys in mine such as drive the Norse out of the garage and turn it straight off (did this today again) and never get starting issues.
Quote from: davehg;827241Just as a comparison I do short journeys in mine such as drive the Norse out of the garage and turn it straight off (did this today again) and never get starting issues.
so theres hope for me then ! :) , I am being told the car is fine by hayward - now I dont know what to think as it seems you guys all think its f`ed, dont know if its me or the car, all I know is I have had it two weeks, spent more time trying to fix it then actually driving it, i cant invest massive amounts of time and money into making it work as it already cost me too much, its :censored::censored::censored::censored:ing me off now and if it doesnt start up or sell soon it will go to the vultures for buttons no doubt, its worth f.a to me as is, in fact less than f.a becos its costing me time i could be using to earn more money for a car that actually works.

thanks, very kind of you, I am based in Surrey so not really feasible from Bristol but thanks anyway, I am probably being negative without just cause, will see what happens when the plugs come out - it may fire into life and all will be forgiven, wont be able to try it for another two weeks though due to work committments, will update again in early july, thanks all
No one saying its fduked, we\'re offering advise. Deflood it, if it runs,Then good. If you still get flooding issues it\'s worth compression testing it. Cheaper than a trip to a tuners , you can eliminate that. Then you need the map looked at if everything else is good.

ok, deflood and hope, if not then the above course of action, thanks

your right, had an enquiry today through ebay asking for comp test results, need to get it done.
Compression test should be done at 250rpm, if it\'s higher or lower rmp the results will be wrong, it should also be done with a Mazda tester, the new ones will automatically calculate it at 250rpm when the button is pressed. So no worries of you have a weak battery.
got the plugs out (the only two I could find) they are the ones directly under the throttle body, need to have a hunt around for the other two.
The plugs look unhappy, pretty black and one had black gunk on it - just about to order new ones BUR9EQP, turned over the car for 4 x 15 second bursts, lots of fuel coming out - I put a piece of newspaper by the plug holes and cranked until the paper was dry, will try and get new plugs in later this week - would be great to take it to Goodwood FOS speed this weekend, im actually enjoying the work - if my missus would stop moaning about it I would keep it and take this RX to a really high standard, would love to turn it into the car that is in my head.
He mate the 4 plugs are all right next to each other.. 2 then another 2 directly above.

Ok thanks, I was pulling on something that looked like it might be a plug but it wouldnt come out by hand and I was concerned I was going to break something if I yanked any harder. will take another look tommorow night, thanks
does anyone know of a mobile mechanic that would come out to Surrey/South London and fix it? I would also need whoever comes to sort to modify/build whatever is broken so that I can use the car - I just want to be able to get in and drive it without carrying around a battery or calling the AA out. The Car has been dead for almost two months now, I have driven it about six times since I bought it and I have spent hours trying to fix it and it just wont start.
I have taken the plugs out completely, I have removed the EGO relay and turned over the car in 15 second bursts for ages - fuel has sprayed everywhere, I have continued to turn over the car with EGI removed until no more fuel comes out.
I have then refitted brand new plugs from Atomic, I have poured a few ml of engine oil into each spark plug hole - I have reconnected the leads correctly (I labelled them) refitted the EGI relay and attempted to start the car with a freshly charged OEM battery.
It wont even cough, it just turns over and nothing happens.
I dont want to take it to Hayward because its miles and I dont want to pay for a trailer or mislead the AA into trailering it over there for me + I want it to start everytime and run reliably and I dont want to return to the builder that over looked this reliability issue during the actual build of the car, so I need a good mechanic in Surrey that will come out and sort it for me, who do you know that can help me without ripping me off please?

hey mate really sorry this has happened to you. my advise would be to get it to a specialist and leave it there till the problem is located and fixed. I\'ve had my rx7 for 18 months now used as a daily for long journeys/short journeys driven hard or lightly and not once has it had any problems. not trying to rub it in just think there is something obviously wrong with it and i wouldn\'nt trust my car with anyone but a handful of specialists. especially not the AA. i think thats one stage off taking it to a spotty little kid at halfords.
Hi mate, My 2 pennies worth....... Get it to Hayward mate. There are lots of good companies out there who can trailer it for very reasonable rates. Shiply comes to mine i had quotes of £80 for an RX8 from Macclesfield to Westbury!
Carl has sorted my car over the phone for free! ..........you really dont want a rusty transit mobile mechanic with an adjustable spanner sucking his teeth on your motor.
You prob need rid of the race battery and decent size ordinary 1 to fire her up after decent de flood.
my battery goes flat after 5 days , bloody alarm. I now jump off a massive diesel battery after periods of un use, once in use she is perfect day after day. I flooded once and she would not restart Carl talked me through it on phone..........
as i said before keep the faith! Cars a legend.
+1 Get it to Carl, he knows the car well and he\'s a decent guy!! Shipley transport is cheap enough if you argue a quote, i just got a Supra taken from South Wales and dropped to Southampton dock for around £140 :King
Dave.
thanks, bet a supra motor would work sweet in one of these, I love the rx7 look just not the shocking unreliability !
Just read this thread, sorry to hear about your troubles. I saw your car at haywards a while back, looks smart as hell. :god
I am 10 minutes from Guildford, where is the car?
I flooded mine once moving here off the drive to the kerb....just forgot she was special for a moment ........

This is a load of :censored::censored::censored::censored:! :bandit:Nono!:Nono!
Big and heavy straight six lump would ruin everything.
They do not have shocking reliability, no more than highly strung piston engines, alot of issues are caused from people simply not understanding the 13b.
From reading this thread, I would not be surprised if it was something very simple to fix, the previous owner did not have any issues did he? :3gears-lh
Break the engine down and sell the parts buy a used ls1 v8. Bada bing bado bo.:Laugh:bandit:3gears-lh:3gears-lh:3gears-lh:3gears-lh:3gears-lh
Get Andy to sort you out

He is close to you .
This may sound pretty simple but have you over looked the type of plugs that are fitted? if they aren\'t standard fit some standard ones as I believe they start better on standards, like 7\'s and 9\'s or maybe 7\'s all round.
I am sure someone will be along to correct me if I am wrong. give it a go anyway, cheap first starting point.
