Title: For sale LS1 V8 FD RX7
Post by: Spartacus on May 28, 2012, 04:22:16 PM
Selling my converted FD as just don’t have time to use it.
Started life as a chaste white FD type X auto (so had an easy life) It was registered in 1993 although it is of a 94 spec with the later type higher quality interior with leather seats and rare electric glass sunroof and a 3.9 diff (almost essential for a V8 conversion) the chassis has covered 57,000mls and the engine and gearbox approx 38,000mls The first MOT after conversion was Dec 2008 and it has had an MOT every year since, always passing with flying colours.
Included is 6 months tax and MOT

Conversion details:

LS1 5.7L V8 and T56 gearbox. It was bought and imported from Cleveland Pick-A-Part (well regarded US dismantler) from a 2004 Pontiac GTO having covered 37,000mls.
PCM sent to wait4me performance to remove antitheft devices and set fan temps etc along with a basic tune.
Custom modified front sub frame imported from Hinson Supercars, along with their mandrel bent stainless steel exhaust manifolds and complete 3.5 inch exhaust system. Also their bump steer correction track rods.
Heavily strengthened rear sub frame and diff support imported from Canada following a group buy.
Polyurethane engine mounts
K&N air filter
Vertical radiator and fan/shroud
Custom, flat aluminium undertray
GM motorsport Rip shifter on the gearbox giving smooth and quick gear changes.
New Supra TT fuel pump fed direct from the battery via a relay, controlled by the PCM
Speedometer correction by Dakota digital interface calibrated via GPS.
All other gauges converted to use with the new pcm

Details of other work carried out within the last 1000mls:

Under sealed and waxoiled chassis (no rust at all)
Suspension completely stripped down, sand blasted arms and rebuild using all new bushes including all oem Mazda pilowballs and superpro polyurethane bushes everywhere else even including the steering rack.
Dynamat sound proofing to doors and under bin area (have more available if you want it)
Tein HA adjustable height and damping coilovers
RacingBrake 2 piece front slotted discs and 1 piece slotted rear discs with Mintex extreme brake pads.
Refurbished RZ BBS alloy wheels with Falken tyres all round
Suspension set up by wheels-inmotion
Tein front strut brace.
Feed style side steps
Momo champion steering wheel
Addition of rear bins with the relocated battery in one of them
Rear light conversion to 1996 style
Will include the private reg number in the sale
The interior has both door handles intact along with the door cubby lid and the centre console arm rest lid and rear parcel shelf.
Whoever buys the car will also get a disc of all files, diagrams, photos and information I used to do the conversion.
My original build thread can be seen here. http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37480&highlight=hinson

Lastly the condition of the bodywork and the whole car in general looks 1 year old rather than 18.
I’m sure there is more that I have left out but if there is anything else you want to know just ask.
Can be viewed in Battle, East Sussex

The second ls1 FD for sale in as many months. Talk about waiting for a bus.

Good luck selling, perfect time of year to do it. As I said when the last one came up for sale. If I wasn\'t already so far in with mine I wouldn\'t of hesitate to buy this.

Sorry for the delay in answering.
Hard to tell how loud it was really as it all depends on what you’re comparing it with and I never measured the Db levels. For me it was a bit too loud but it did sound very good (think of an angry harder edged V8 TVR).
From Hinson’s it came with just one back box which was an off the shelf item which I believe he now supplies his own custom made box which may have made it quieter anyhow.
I tried to quieten it a little by adding a smallish intermediate box just behind the Y pipe which made no difference whatsoever!

Depending on the power levels required it might be an idea to drop down to 3 inch tubing rather than 3.5 which would allow more widely available silencers etc.

I’ve added a pic of the headers and Y pipe but I don\'t have any pics of the rest but to be honest it was just 6 foot of 3.5 inch mandrel bent stainless steel tube.

If I was to do it again I would get his headers and Y pipe (although others have had problems with fitment)   and get the rest made up over here.
Hope that helps.

I have Hinson headers and y-pipe. My RH header doesn\'t fit as it touches the frame rail. I have had to cut the flange off so that I can reposition the header and get it welded again. Also, the flange is warped so it leaks. Not the best quality. TBH I would go custom if its not too pricey.

Hinson - Nice ideas but maybe too may kits and no development after they complete the beta kit stage it would appear.

Oh and that exhaust is massive! Mine is 1 3/4" primary to 2 x 2.5" to 3" and with two small mid boxes (1 in each 2.5") and a large repackable rear box I measured 83 dB at idle and 101 dB at 4K RPM.

Looking at the picture, my headers are a lot shorter. More of a mid-tube rather than long tube.

Maybe I was lucky with the fitment, I know I was one of the first if not the first to get them in RHD.
