Title: Catch can full in 2 hours wtf
Post by: shifty on May 15, 2012, 05:05:43 PM
Ok having a strange one with my oil I did 2 track sessions at Japfest and by the end all my oil was in the catch tank .
Basically I got to the venue hot engine check oil it was about 1/4 up the dip stick so I topped up to just over half way I then did 2 20 minute track sessions over 2 hours then when I came in I parked up popped the hood for some airflow but noticed the catch tank was full so I check my oil and it was bare minimum so what\'s up with that then seems strange that its being drawn up the filler pipe and into the tank.

pipe blockage somewhere causing excess pressure in the engine forcing the oil out on over run or high revs???

Its also been suggested it might be bad oil control rings.
Is there anyway of testing for either a blockage or the above

It is largely becuase the oil is trying to go up the filler neck on right hand bends as the neck is on the left side of the engine and in this country there are mostly in this country circuits going clockwise.
The oil level stone cold for track ought to be just over half way on the dipstick but this does not entriely alleviate this so the catch tank has to be emptied, that is why race cars have to have catch tanks.
Just take oil out after each session and retop up the engine but don\'t overdo it.

Also if oil control rings were at fault the engine would be excessively smokey all the time and oil consumption would be really high.

Ok cool thanks Carl will try venting the can and blocking the intake been told my intake can also cause a vacuum dont know how true it is but it cant do any harm in trying.

Ok filled my can up with an hours worth of spirited driving (none track) this is puzzling me now and something is up cos it never used to do this , im currently looking into a new larger catch can to give me a better chance of spotting it before it overflows.

I would be more worried about no oil in the engine if your getting a larger can, at least if it overfills it gives you some kind of warning. Last thing you want it oil starvation.

thats a good point just seems strange Carls point made sense about the filler neck and track running but that wouldnt account for todays straight line bursts.
Guess il just have to be uber carefull until I can get her into Carl.

Could also be blow by pass the seals when under boost causing crank case pressure, if doing it on the road.
