Post by: clive on May 13, 2012, 11:23:57 AM
Many thanks to all of you who came to Japfest especially the ones who braved sitting in the traffic that long, collectively you made a great varied stand, thankyou.
foot note/
Yes it was a pain if you did not get there before 7.15 when you could drive straight in, but I will say that I feel this event will not work at another track the way it does now, I say this because many of you who have been around for a long time will remember when JAE moved from Billing and has never been the same event again :(
I said it at the time that moving JAE was about the same as saying "lets move Glastonbury" I feel the same would go for Japfest.
For JAE at Billing we used to take 130/140 Rotarys there, then it moved to Peterborough and we had 25 cars over two days the following year 5 !:o
Once again thankyou to those who attended :Thumbs-up __________________ REgards

Would like to say thanks for everyone involved in helping organize this event this year... it was an awesome day, The 4 track sessions still left me wanting more. Thanks to Clive for bringing brake pads... something i needed after my third session. The MRC done themselves proud and we all managed to show off our rotaries to a capacity crowd. I look forward to the next one (even though its going to be a year to go) We really do need to get a track day there an OPL jobbie would be epic. Thanks to Clive and Lisa for all the work you both put in, i know it got a little mental the last week but it all seemed to pay off. Casey the track sessions went down a storm. It was a shame i didnt get chance to chat to more people as the little brother wanted me to take a walk round after my last session (but i wanted to stay and be social for a bit) and to the person who had an off i hope both you and your car are ok...(you know who you are)
Lastly a big big thanks for Chris (CJR) for doing me a massive favour and popping back to the circuit this morning to take a look for my misplaced Rain Trays off my Carbon bonnet... It was the only thing to put a dampener on my day (but only when i realized i had not packed them half way along the M4 to London) Chris your a star and i guess that more insentive to get to Olton Park now.

Was a brill day many thanks for organising this.:god.....only spoke to a few people as my colt was parked up the other end and 3 sessions in that! The crowd was immense just meant getting around the circuit on foot was time consuming. On track first session car was awesome , found some weak points to address mainly brakes mushy last 2 laps and my video shows Clive only caught me after the chequer flag and my brakes where bad and i ran out of fuel ....LOL ...i got loads of excuses!!! Fair play caught me!:god:spank

Don\'t worry too much Clive is a nutter. Had a fantastic day and huge thanks has to go out to a wonderful weekend. Had a much better run on my 2nd session. Clive\'s corner speed is amazing, I have probably 200bhp and double ftlb of torque but my corner speed is nowhere near clives. I felt Like I was a couple of seconds slower on the 2nd session for a lap ! Maybe I need to buy some more brave pills :Giggle
Sorry I set my clock wrong, I was a whole hour out on my phone :Hammer Made it a bit of a rush and I just jumped out of bed and set off ! Amazed to see a queue at 7:20am getting into the track !
Looking so much to Oulton now.
Was absolutely wonderful :D Big thanks to the people who made it happen :D

Brilliant day thanks.

Wow, I\'ve never seen a busier Japfest - which was a pain for those who planned to arrive later and hit the queues. Fantastic to see so many rotaries support the event this year. I think we had about 40 cars on the MRC stand and the RX-8 OC opposite had ~60 too.
Massive thanks to Clive and Lisa for organising everthing.
Apologies that I had very little time to get around and talk to people as it was a complete mare to get everything done in time for the first track session at 9am and then to get back and forth for the further three sessions on track.
Massive thanks to all those who went out on track - I hope you all had as much fun as I had out there and the only sad spot was the RX-7 which had a big off at Tower (no details for obvious reasons) but I understand the driver is OK and the car isn\'t too bad either. I hope we can get this confirmed shortly.
Again though; a superb day out, great weather, and in the company of so many great rotary fans :)

Thread ont other site has talked about the off.
Driver says he is fine, cage and harnesses worked as they should. Car needs new wings bonnet and bumper. Had huge citation on the straight, brakes didn\'t work, went into barrier at 80-90mph!! Aparently a Marshall found what looks like a brake caliper bolt further up the straight.
Such a shame this event is roughly a million miles away from me, would loved to have been there especially with 100 rotaries there.

Rotors where dotted around almost everywhere too. I bet the total could have easily got into 150 rotors easily.

Thanks guys for organising the club stand. I was pleased to have my car on display despite the niggling issues with my bodywork being done at last minute!!
Good to see some more rotary goodness, there were some very nice cars about and enjoyed hearing the Kyouto Drift RX8 and 7 sliding around Combe!!! Soo full of awesome!!! :D
Would also like to thank Keith for the compression test on me and Robs cars before we left. Nice to know my engine will be killing pistons for a while yet :P Did think it was quite funny that someone thought we had both "flooded our engines" tho... i\'m not sure ive even flooded it once yet...
And sorry for not introducing myself to more people. Will try and socialise more at JapShow ;)

Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;823065Had huge citation on the straight.
"citation"?
So pleased to hear that driver (I know him) is OK and the damage sounds superficial. I have an in-car video of the car as it locked up and ran into the barrier. I\'d just eased off throttle and indicated for him to pass me on the straight just before that corner. I witnessed the impact and was quite worried until I went past on the next lap (the red flag didn\'t appear until I\'d passed the pit lane entry) and saw the driver, still in the car, but talking to a marshall.

Big thanks for the 2x track sessions I took part in and sorry if I inadvertently held you up :o (blue 8 with 787b livery on the roof). Was a great assortment of cars and experience.
Hope the chap in the green 7 is in good shape and that it is not too big a job getting the car restored to full health.
Cheers Stew.

Absolutely no need to apologise Stewart, seriously. You didn\'t hold me up at all, I was more concerned when you strayed slightly onto the grass, but you got it back on the tarmac again without any problem! As long as you enjoyed your time out on track that is all the matters. Lovely to see you both again.

I\'ve spoken to the driver this evening and he\'s absolutely fine, as is his passenger. The car has been recovered to his home (~60 miles from the track) and initial indications are that the car isn\'t too badly damaged.

Hi all, a massive thank you to Clive and Lisa for organising... must have been a nightmare... just wish the Japfest stand/track time organisers were as good.
Thanks for all the well wishing with regard to the car, we\'re going to have a good look over her tonight to see if she needs re-shelling. My main concern at the time was \'feck and arse..I\'ve screwed up everybodys track time\' I\'m mega sorry if this was he case, the incident was completely out of my control as the vibration got so bad coming along side Malcolm that I thought my fillings was gunna fall out, looking at the footage from Malcolm I was braking as I came past but I had no brakes at all until the front right suddenly locked and by that time it was too late, we just went straight on.
A big thumbs up to the marshalls at Combe too... they were great.
Again, really sorry if I screwed all of your track time up.
Dave
PS: I\'m not fussed if you want to show the whole footage Malcolm.

I came by to see a marshall having the required chat to you before getting you out of the car so I knew you was ok.
I\'ve been involved in many race track crashes over the years and have had many bent or written off cars but after I\'ve always focused on the fact that cars mend more easily than people
Just really pleased your ok,

Just so every one knows, leading up to the event we tried again and again with the organisers to be around the other side of the circuit near the Tower chicane and told them repeatedly that if we were not there we would not have access to the back of the pits to get on and off the track.
Maybe due to the repeated requests It could be that they punished us for pestering and put us as far from the track entrance as possible, but on a more serious note, I feel its deplorable to expect us to drive that far through crowds and crowds of people risking ruining a child over every foot of the way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not only that apologies to the people not on track because you could see very little from track side due to our location
Really feel we were let down as we have attended every Japfest as a club and without clubs like ours there would be no Japfest!

well my day was a complete waste of time!!
left at 4.30 in the morning with a 3 hour drive to the show, all excited about my first show of the year and i got to the roundabout that says castle combe 4 miles at 7.30 on the dot!!! and thats where it all went wrong!! 5 and a half hours later and i was still sat in traffic a mile away from the event and still not moving, so at 1 oclock i finally called it a day and headed home on my 3 hour return journey so in total 11 and a half hours sat in my car for absolutly nothing, what a waste of time and money!! not a happy bunny!! :(:(:(
even when i left there were cars still sat there right back to the roundabout and beyond in all directions with no chance of getting in before the show finished.
glad to see those of you that got there had a good time!! maybe i\'ll see you lot at the next show

bloody hell...didnt realize that bad half hour must have made all the difference! It\'s purely the infrastructural roads my mates all got in round the back coming through Castle Combe village. Its happened before for Japfest i\'ve queue myself hours so the organisers need to learn from this......inside was awful as well......so many people, trying to get your car to the pitlane was a joke.....I nearly missed 1 session and had to join mid session and 2 occasions I was shouted at driving through the crowds.
outside and inside needs sorting for next year

Left Swindon at about 8:15 thinking it didn\'t start for the public till 9:00 so we\'d get there just in time. 4 hours later sat in traffic down some country lane thinking "I can just about hear tyres squealing...".
Sorry to Lisa and Casey for missing my track time. We were stuck out in the middle of nowhere with some lads in a Civic behind us from Lithuania! :eek
Saw a couple in a blue RX8, I believe they\'re well known on here ;), down from the Morrisons round about get out and start cleaning it.
Beautiful gold SA22c driving around the area and then parked up outside the Event?
With the FC not playing ball the night before it gave me an excuse to bring the girlfriend and daughter which was nice however the heat and the queuing Elise (the sprog) wasn\'t playing ball for the few hours we spent actually inside the gates.
Who had the black T2 on the MRC stand and what is your pillar gauge pod please? :chat
And, Boosted, does your other half post about your FD and Colt on Pistonheads?
Couldn\'t quite believe how quick Clive was in the 8 despite the lack of engine noise emanating from it. Was brilliant to see his braking getting later and later (AFTER THE HUMP!) lap after lap during the second RX8OC session. Phenomenal.
Two chaps in a fairly standard looking (aesthetically) FD passed us (Green Mazda2) on the M4 which I saw later on the stand with a very polished engine bay.
All in all, Lovely Track (and local), Great Stand, Shame about the queues. :Thumbs-up

Is Facebook the right communication channel - loads of people (including me) have complained on there and not even a proper apology has been made.
After reading people\'s experiences I think the issue was that if, like me, you followed the official AA signs then you were looking at over three hours to queue even if you got there early. Many people got in quicker using alternative routes and back roads.
If I had missed track time or not got in at all I would be pretty hacked off - I still can\'t believe they charged us full price to get in, even at 2pm!

I should point out that I was cleaning it - Neil was playing on his iPad!
You might be in this photo then - the postie behind us got out at least three times for a fag. We gave up at about 11am and went back to the Little Chef for some brunch and a wee! Thought we\'d give it time to clear but set off again at midday and still took another two hours to get in.

Whilst I\'m sorry you took so long to get in, real pleased you enjoyed the day.

I\'d like to join the many \'Thanks to Clive & Lisa\' for organising this event. I travelled down from near Leeds the Friday afternoon, to ensure an early arrival at the track, but despite arriving at just after 7.15 am we still had to rush to make the first track session. Thankfully no one was injured by a passing RX going to and from the stand between track sessions.
I also apologies for not being around on the club stands until late in the day to meet other RX owners and to chat. It\'s amazing how much info can be picked up looking at different cars and chatting to the owners.
Big thanks to Clive for coming to my rescue with a large tool kit when my front pads jammed in the calipers. Thankfully we managed to change the road pads for the \'track pads\'.
Aston, I was so lucky when I went back on Sunday morning to find your rain trays. The track was locked up, but after half an hour of driving between the main and side gates I met an organiser who was kind enough to accept my story and let me drive down to the club stand area, where I found your trays. They are now safely in my garage and I\'ll bring them to Oulton. If you cannot make it I\'m sure Malcolm or Ian would take them.
I had a fantastic drive home on Sunday morning with very light traffic.
Will post a few pictures up shortly.

Well my weekend was very not good either, i left the hotel at 8 to get to the track, que\'d for i don,t know how long, engine overheated twice with warning buzzer driving me mad, so had to leave the que to find water, and was lent a kettle from a snack van, this made me pull out of my track session, not quite knowing what the problem was, also i did not see one sign, or direction on how to get where i should of been anyway. My son turned back after sitting in a 16 mile tailback. 2 miles from the track Even if did decide to do the session, there was no way i would drive through all the public with children etc, if your foot slipped how many kids could be killed, a disgrace to Castle Commbe, why is there not a dedicated slip road fo those going on the track, i will never go again.

Currently it looks like they let one car in at a time.
I reckon they could do a lot by having multiple booths that are deeper into the car park to deal with ticket handling - 4 or 5 would help keep the queues moving forward for those who had tickets ready, and you wouldn\'t have too much wait if there were lots of people who had to pay.
I also had to take the back route into the circuit, and with about 25 minutes to go to the briefing had to go down on the wrong side of the road to do it.
Made it though and had a brilliant day meeting old friends and new faces :yes The track sessions were superb as was the chill out afterwards in the club areas.

Thanks to Lisa for making me feel welcome when I first arrived, and thanks to Casey for the fast ride in his RX-8 (: :3gears-rh
I know what people mean about the queues, they made an announcement about some spare track time on the 4:30 session, I booked it and drove from the stand at 4, didn´t get there until 5, bit late lol, they gave me a refund so it´s all good. will do a proper track day anyway!
hey I made this suggestion to Casey but I´ll post it here too, for next year you could give people the option of getting their track passes posted or picking them up on the day; I think quite a few people might choose to pick them up because then if for some reason you can´t make it it´s easy to sell them on (to the last minute people like me!:o)

I was over on the RX8 stand(at least some of the day when not fighting though the public to get to the track) but still was out in the first track session with the MRC lot and must say sorry to the guy in the black FB(think it was Jim according to Malcolm) after passing him on the next lap I went off a little at Quarry guess it was a case of talent running out but lucky only minor damage to the passenger rear door. Glad to hear that driver and passenger in the green RX7 were ok and not to much damage to the car. Had two other great sessions out with RX8OC club the only down side was all three times I started out near the back so had to get passed a few slower guys before getting a few clear laps and the chequered flag came out in my last session just as I was starting to learn the track :2Rolleyes. Guess maybe I should have gone for all four sessions :driving. As for getting into the track we were just about ok leaving reading services at 6.20 and getting in at 7.40ish just having time to dump stuff out the boot at the stand and get to the briefing and be sound checked by 8.10. Japfest really do need to sort out the traffic side of things plus look at putting the clubs that have dedicated track session near the pits.

I really don\'t think they have a monkeys about us having 4 track sessions and being so far away from the track. It puzzles me when there is plenty of room in the paddock area that clubs occupy this should really be priority parking for clubs with a number of track sessions. I heard from Scootg that the Z boys had one or two dedicated track sessions and they where stood right next to the sound testing.

Hey all,
As I mentioned over on the RX8OC, to all who were instrumental in making this event a success.....a BIG thank you, and to all those who where there to make the event another special one....thank you to you too.
My story of the day is very similar to many of the others, what with being on 4 track sessions, I felt like I hardly made it back to the stand to get to chat with everyone. But despite the brief time back at the stand, it was a pleasure to see all the friendly faces.
Its always fun to go out to play with all kinds of rotaries, I always come away feeling like I want to adopt a bunch of FC\'s and FD\'s to come and live on my driveway and eat out my bank account together whilst sipping on the finest oil and high octane gas lol.
I cant imagine any other clubs were up to the joined fun that was being had between the MRC and the RX8OC......!! :)
Now....about those 888\'s........mmmmmm!!!

bit late but would like to also add my thanks to clive and lisa for a awesome day
coming off the m4 wasn\'t two bad as i was a bit late and started queuing at 9 and i was on the club stand by 10 having wading through quite some blind and deaf people who couldn\'t hear a car literally 1ft behind them on a road :)
were the marshals at the gates with japfest and future events or are they working for castle combe? because getting out was a nightmare will all three directions from our area and the both roads from the pits etc trying to get out plus no one could pull out and we were waiting a hour till some one with some brains was stopping the traffic so we could pull out
and ive finally broke my track time cherry haha was my first time on race track and i was bricking them going out and expecting every thing to pass me being as i was in the car with the least amount of power but as soon as i was on track it was awesome cant wait till the next track day just a pitty oulton park and snett are so far away
ive managed to get some of the pics from the website so if anyone needs some pm me and i\'ll get them from the website my egi (http://i770.photobucket.com/albums/xx343/aundre-3000/Picture10.png)

Hi there and welcome over to MRC! :wave
Thank you for your comments - it is good to here the stories from the guys who were out on track (although all the RX-8 guys tell me they were faster then the RX-7\'s and vice versa! :Giggle )
There are lots of RX-7 projects around at the moment but as you say (and as I\'m sure Malcolm, Ian and co will agree) they do tend to eat away at your cash and time. But then again what else are you going to do with it?? :rollin

I have emailed Japfest with a few of the comments made on here regarding our stand position, the problems and safefty issue of getting the cars to and back from the track.
It will be interesting to see I get a reply :(

A warm welcome to the MRC form me too, Dre :)
Really great to see you again, have a chat and see your car going super quick at Castle Combe. I\'m pretty certain you were quicker than me on the day!

LOL! Totally forgot about the FB (shame on me) - but I sure have room for one of those too.
Thanks for all of the welcomes.....im a bit embarrassed really - I cant figure out why after over a year of membership my post count is only a massive....2!!! including this one!! So really, I should be saying thank you for all of the fun last year too!!!
@AMH ....there is nothing like a good story....im sure I have rolled a fable or two off since the day "...and I came up to quarry at like 160ph......and didn\'t break...." lol...."Sure you did!!" Also....thanks for the great pictures!!
@Clive I have an odd forum etiquette...straight in...full member....no posts....thats how I roll....ha ha....no, there will be more posts from now on. Being behind ObiWanClive for a few laps is a breath taking experience, makes you appreciate just how much sauce you are squeezing out of the 8
@Casey Always good to catchup. I feel like a naughty hoodlum when I watch your videos, you keep it so calm, and wide....I would imagine that our times very similar for the day....my guest sneaked into my car with app that seemed to magically spit a time out at the end of the day....(smh), but I gladly took the time from him he he.

I have to say apart from having to get the car past the crowds to get to the pits I had a great day, we got in fine and when we left at about half three the roads were clear , it was thanks to Malcolm that we got there in time, fortunately for us he is organized. We only had the two track sessions so got a good look around and got a chance to watch the rotarys out on the track in the afternoon.
Thanks again to mrc and I will see you next month

I didn\'t think much of the pics take by the so called pros they don\'t really give any idea of speed or movement unlike these take by stewartm. Stews 2012 Japfest Flickr set (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66238990@N03/sets/72157629713273870/with/7191350238/)
Me having fun. (http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5200/7191350238_38356099eb_b_d.jpg) Clives yellow a better pic than the so called pro one Ann found as it gives a real idea of speed IMO. (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7212/7191190258_deb9c34f27_b_d.jpg)
There are more pics in the above link it\'s just a shame Stew was out in three of the four rotories sessions so only got some pics from the RX8OC session one.

It\'s fine Chris, made me laugh. Neil will be the first to admit that he hasn\'t mastered speed photography yet.
Mind you he\'s started looking at the price of RX-8\'s as potential track cars now so it might be me having to take the photos next time! :eek
