Title: \'Official\' fuel economy
Post by: 1monster1 on May 10, 2012, 12:51:48 PM
Hello all.

It\'s been several years (maybe 6+) since I was last a frequent visitor to MRC forum, when at the time I came dangerously close to purchasing a Knightsports tuned FD.

Needless to say, the cash set aside for that car ended up as a deposit for my house :2Rolleyes.

So, years later I\'m back and looking again at possibly getting myself a nice original \'96+ FD for some spirited weekend blasts and a more interesting way of getting to work (7-8 miles each way).

Last night I was reading Brian Long\'s book and noticed that the official MPG for the FD was quoted at around 37mpg at 56 mph.

Is this actually possible with the 13b?  Of course it then goes on to say that few drivers ever got above 20mpg due to the temptation of \'extending the RE\' :Laugh

I guess Brian or Mazda were smoking crack when they wrote that :bandit

i found when on motorways/dual carriage ways, and sticking to speed limits and sensible driving, my fd is actually not that bad compared to what i get normally.

so i could almost believe that 30 mpg is achievable in the right conditions, like 56 mph, but in the real world, we have traffic, round abouts and traffic lights amongst other things that we have to slow down or stop for.

if you commute 7-8 miles each day, thats similiar enough to myself, expect around 20 mpg AT BEST, assuming you dont live and work right on the motorway.

best figure i ever got was around 18mpg for a whole tank. filled it to the brim from near empty and drove as efficient as possible, except a couple of occasions, till i was near empty again(fuel starvation round some corners)

I get 380 to 400 km per tank and that\'s just normal driving no thrashing it or granny driving somewhere in beetween.

I\'ve managed 22mpg, but seriously, you don\'t buy an FD if you\'re bothered about MPG!!!

Same here on a long run doing 60 mph and with nothing else on the road to slow me down I got 24 mpg. It was boring and I won\'t be doing it again without very good cause

:Laugh Of course! The figure just seemed so outrageously high that I thought it would be interesting to see what owners actually get in the real world when driving \'economically\'....

Our 1.4 litre Peugeot 306 is HORRENDOUS on fuel (relatively speaking) with 30- 35mpg - so I think I\'m justified in replacing it with something that is a bit worse in terms of fuel economy, but MUCH better styling (not particularly difficult) and MUCH more fun to drive! :Hammer:rollin

I barely got 100 miles from half a tank (£50 of super), going very steady. Hell, I didn\'t buy it for fuel economy though.

mines fairly stock and i get around 20mpg, i was getting ALOT less when i had a vacuum leak in the rats nest.

Thats also a mixture of hard driving, stop start traffic and motorway cruising as my cars my daily (van) :P

In theory if the 56mph was 20ft behind an Wagon to draft then it may be possible :Giggle

When I first got my car I drove from the Souith Coast to Aberdeen and averaged mid 30 mpg, so it is posible, the car was stock.

Perhaps people\'s driving habits are mostly responsible for such low MPG figures then...?
Of course, the FD is designed to be driven hard but it\'s reassuring to know that when cruising on the motorway the car can provide OK fuel economy and that not all the fuel is being washed down the exhaust :driving

Did 27mpg from London to Edinburgh when I first got mine, which came as quite a surprise.
Needless to say, it is in the low teens now I\'m using it for pottering about town. Worst so far was half a tank driving St Andrews to Edinburgh (about 75 miles) but it was the greatest hour of driving I\'ve ever done :D

After my retune with negative lag and a really lean cruise my FD does 29-30mpg.

But its only possible if you stay under 0bar boost for most of the time.

Does a lean map for cruising carry any risk/detriment to the engine?

Sorry, but what does negative lag mean? :o

Mine was averaging 17 mpg for pretty steady road use before i took it apart. Can only imagine if you\'re heavy footed it will be well below 15 mpg.

Will be interested to see how low my mpg goes when it becomes a track car next year :chat

I\'ve not emptied my first tank yet. Sat on the 1/4 line marker after 360km. Drove most of the way back with a boost leak though it seems as I had a poke around the bay the day after I bought it and one of the pipes was fair loose!

Now it\'s boosting properly to 0.8bar though its dropped quite quick lol

I dare say 37mpg was achievable - but I very much doubt anyone else will get that figure. There\'s hardly any standard FD\'s about, and those that are are between 10 and 20 years old. I don\'t think you can compare with what was probably a brand new totally standard car.

Anyway, to reiterate what\'s already been said - who cares! :)

According to Japanese Performance magazine this month, the rotary is at its most efficient at 150mph

You know what to do gentlemen... ;)
