Hi,
I have a turbo II engine and gearbox in my kit car and am having some gear selection issues. The gearbox has a mazdaspeed quick shifter fitted.
The problem is that 1st and 2nd are fine but sometimes going to 3rd finds me grinding in to 5th. The feel of the gear change is very sloppy.
It\'s quite hard to explain what I found when I took the gearlever off but I\'ll have a go...
Under normal circumstances changing in to 5th or reverse seems to require some effort to push against a sprung gate if that makes sense. When I took the gear lever off that sprung gate hadn\'t returned/closed when I came out of reverse getting the car off the drive. This seems to be the issue with finding 3rd I think... essentially this sprung gate thing was still open when I was changing from 2nd to 3rd so it seemed to fall in to 5th. I greased as much stuff as I could see and now most of the time this sprung thing springs back when I change out of reverse and then the change from 2nd to 3rd happen smoothly. However, sometimes it needs a good wiggle to get this sprung gate to return to its closed position.
The question is where is this sprung gate and how do I gain access to it in order to give it a good clean and grease so it works properly and reliably.
Does that make any kind of sense?
Thanks,
Mark
PS. I originally posted this in the member\'s cars section under 2nd generation so apologies if you\'ve seen it there. I don\'t mean to cross post it, just trying to correct my initial mistake in selecting the appropriate section of the forum :Hammer
the is a little wire spring on the side of the box just behind a little square metal plate that is bolted to the side of the selector box. I dont think i have a spare spring as i put the one from the spare gearbox i have into the box you have. if you need any more give me a call

Cool, thanks Tony. I\'ll have a look when (if) it stop raining.
All the best,

I\'ve been told if you find yourself going for third but end up in fifth, that\'s a fair warning that the gearbox is shagged, may be worthwhile getting it reconditioned.
well whoever told you that is wrong. the selector mechanism and gear gates dont have any connection with the condition of the gears, bearings and seals inside the box which a rebuild would sort (unless something is actually snapped of course). This was T2REW\'s (Jason) box that he had rebuilt. There is a bush at the bottom of the shifter that wears houe which can cause it or the spring breaks. Both common but very simple issues to sort.
fair enough, I\'ll let Hayward know next time I see him.
no need, i\'ll tell him myself!
