Title: Starting an fb
Post by: wiggman2030 on April 24, 2012, 07:33:25 PM
Hi guys,

I recently just bought a 1984 rx7 woo hoo! I currently have an FD so I\'m not too sure on how these little beauties start best.

Currently the only way i\'ve noticed that i can get mine to start is if I literally pump the choke for a little while while cranking it over. I know this sounds stupid but I checked in the carb and it doesn\'t seem to be putting any fuel in if I just crank it over. When I pump the choke fuel dribbles in the carb and then when I crank it the car fires up.

The car does run a little lumpy for a while but then it seems to sort itself out.
From there on I can start the car as normal, it still requires a little cranking though. There seems to be a fairly strong smell of petrol (like it\'s running too rich) probably due to the fact that i\'m pumping the choke haha. Also there is a fair bit of white smoke. Doesn\'t smell like coolant though. I also put my hand over the end of the exhaust and there are no water droplets on my palm.

Extra info:
I think the spark plugs are wrong. Currently using some BR7ET plugs when I think they should be 8\'s.

Outside temp is about 10 degress.

I\'m a noob when it comes to first gens lol :)

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Just pull the choke fully out and let the car warm up ! It will pop back in when the car is warm.

When I was on car I\'d normally go full choke, and if it was a cold morning one pump of the throttle then crank it. It should fire up fairly quickly, and rev upto ~3k. Let it rev like that for 10-15 seconds then push the choke in till it\'s revving around 2k. Then drive around on the choke, till them temp gauge reads a little above the C mark. Then choke in and it\'ll be fine.

Hot start for me worked best with no choke or throttle, but as soon as it caught then a little pump of throttle to kinda catch then revs.

Hope that helps :)

If its still awkward it might be worth taking the carb up and cleaning it up. After 25+ years most of the carbs on 1st gens could do with a clean out to work at their best.

First of all look down the barrels and make sure the choke butterfly is working properly.

If the engine is in good nick and ran a few miles say yesterday or the day before, it should start in this weather with the choke knob only about halfway out. You don\'t need to pump the accelerator, just be ready to catch it when it fires.

If it hasn\'t run for a couple of weeks they seem to need a tad more choke and a bit of cranking to start up.....I find about 3/4 choke is good.

Drive off straight away, put the choke knob in as soon as you can and pull it back out a tad to keep it alive at junctions until it\'s got warm.
If I had a quid for every choke start on a cold car I\'d be a Ă‚Â£Millionaire. You youn\'uns with your new fangled injectorators.

Is it running on Premix? that could be the white smoke.....mine does that.
But too much Premix or old fuel could affect starting I guess.
Plugs....yeh BR8ET is the middle grade for street use.

I\'d love to know which 1st Gen you bought so that I can amend my Register?

Cheers for all the help guys :)

I took a look at the choke and the butterfly isn\'t moving when i pull the choke out. Probably the reason im having trouble. I don\'t think it\'s running premix. As you mentioned that I really should ask an important question. Is it easy to tell if the omp has been removed? as the fuel is about to run out and i should really know whether to put oil in too lol. I would like to stick with the omp if I can.

As for the rx7 I bought it was recently on ebay. Red and black one...... yeah it was a bit of a state but I want to restore to it\'s former glory as much as possible. I\'m slowly getting the knack to starting it.

I crank it and pump the accelerator a little while turning the engine over, after about 10 seconds it starts up. I then pull the choke out about half way to keep it running. I know it\'s not working properly as it keeps cutting out a lot when i try to move it but at least I can drive it :-D

Thanks again guys. Just need to find out about the premix or omp thing now. I bet you love all the noobs asking the same old questions lol

Questions....don\'t worry about it, good to find new interested owners.
The OMP is easy to see, it\'s quite small, down on the bottom of the engine, at the front, 2 thin clear pipes rise up to the carburettor.
If yours has gone it will probably be blanked off and the clear pipes won\'t be there.

You can do one of 3 things with the OMP.
1. Remove it and run solely on Premix....I think the mix people use is about 100:1
2. Keep it and Premix as well. That\'s what I do \'cos all these engines are old now. Mix at 250:1
3. Just run the OMP.

I think I\'ve got the car tabbed.....it\'s Registration numbers add up to 14?

Yeah that\'s the one lol. It not that bad, it has a small amount of rust, the door has a massive dent in it but that\'s all getting sorted.

It runs and I like it :)

It does have the two plastic pipes that run to the carb so I guess that the OMP is still there. I don\'t notice any oil residue or anything in the pipes though. I guess it\'s a very small amount that passes through anyway.

I will probably premix it anyway. Like you said they are old engines.

Can\'t wait to get it on the road. Ooh and it\'s got a welded diff too :( so that needs to be sorted as well.

Apart from that I\'m happy with it.

Thanks for the help guys. I will be back for more questions later :)

Oil goes up both of those plastic pipes to the carb, but very slowly. A lot of spaces and gaps to be seen in the oil flow as well.
