i got bored with searching various forums so i decided to take the inlet off and have a look for myself.

here you can see one of the aux port actuators

here are both of them together shown with the upper inlet removed

here are the solenoids which control the 2 port actuators

All the info i found on the net said the 2 actuators are above the exhaust manifold as in the pic m1tch posted and they rotated a sleeve to open the extra port, when they are in their rest position they are closed, and that
On the 86-88 s4 cars they were operated by positive pressure from the exhaust manifold.
On 89-91 s5 cars they were operated by positive pressure from an air pump

On my engine which is a 86 n/a 13b the actuators are mounted in a different place, they are not sleeves that rotate but they are butterfly valves and that they are operated using a vacuum (negative) pressure from the inlet manifold. when they are in the rest position they are open.
when the engine is running the solenoid can open or close allowing the ports to be either open or closed

hope this is some help to people
