Title: Whoops - A warning and a lesson learned
Post by: BinoX on March 03, 2012, 07:10:10 PM
Funny story (to everyone except me)

Now that my FC is road legal, I decided to go and replace all the ancient vac hoses and fit my other set of injectors that I\'d recently had professionally cleaned and fixed :)

Removing the upper intake manifold was ok...
Taking the old gasket off was time consuming, but also went ok...
Taking the existing vac lines off and putting new ones on, totally fine...
Putting new injectors on... Oh dear...

I decided it would be a good idea to also replace all the copper washers on the fuel rails, as I never took it apart, even during the rebuild I just took it out whole...

One of the banjo bolts was a bit tight, but I managed to get it off, put the new washers in and tightened it all up again... Only to find that while undoing one I had managed to twist and distort the primary fuel rail... So much distorted that the bracket was almost 45 degrees from where it should be and the injector holes were pointing inwards and one of them seemed to be about 5 degrees out of alignment as well....

Now thankfully I had a spare one, but I wasted about an hour finding it plus about an hour wasted cleaning up the old fuel rail...

I have no idea what the fuel rails are made of, but it\'s just not particularly tough stuff it would seem!

I then attacked the old fuel rail with a hammer and the squished it in a vice to let off some steam... I fitted the replacement fuel rails and injectors etc and then gave up for the day and went home... I\'ll try again tomorrow, hopefully with more luck. (And yes, I realise it was my own fault for bending it, that\'s probably why I\'m so annoyed, lol)

So a warning to anyone doing anything to the fuel system with the stock rails: THEY BEND EXTREMELY EASILY! BE VERY CAREFUL.

I have a spare one in the garage, my uprated fuel rails won\'t bend, just all the plastic pipes attached to the engine break lol the OEM rails are good for about 500bhp, but perhaps the attachments aren\'t as strong lol

Lol, i can imagine the panic and frustration, constant cursing while looking for the other rail... I hate looking for misplaced items....

I\'m just glad that I DID have a spare one :) it was tucked away in a box of bits in the shed.. I honestly didn\'t think I\'d ever need to use it, it was just kept because it didn\'t take up space and I thought it would be useful if I ever get enough parts together I could have a spare engine on standby :)

I\'ll probably go with an aftermarket fuel rail when I start upgrading (probably in a year or so) But for now I just want a working car... it passed it\'s MOT fine, but it would "choke up" after a couple of miles and smoke a lot at startup (excess fuel) which is why I\'m redoing everything... Because if it\'s not the fuel system or any of the gaskets, I\'m going to have to start on a major fault-finding mission... and I am totally out of money, even the food budget is gunna be tight this month since I\'ve bought all of this stuff to fix up the car.... But at least the mortgage payment went out ok, so I still have a house to live in, lol :)

Ive got a question, more than likely its one of the airlines in the rats nest that needs sorting and if the rx7 that ive been breaking was anything to go by, the lines are probably destoryed....although one of the reasons thats stopped me from doing it atm is gaskets...anyone know wheres a good place for replacements?

I think Rotechniks do an uprated LIM/UIM gasket, its worked fine on mine :)

I got a pair of gaskets from mazda rotary parts (one for the LIM and one for the UIM)... I sent them an email and I had them within a couple of weeks. :)
