Can I ask those who experienced the hotel we stayed at last year (The Sandhurst), and who experienced the charismatic (I think that\'s the word ;)) Cypriot lady owner, whether you\'d be happy to stay there again, or would prefer me to look at alternatives. At least it was an improvement on the Tarporley hotel we stayed in the year before!

OK, I finally got a few minutes to put up some more detailed information about this trackday.

The event will be managed via Mazdaontrack, who will be in attendance on the day.

Are you a newcomer to trackdays? As on all trackdays, they are well managed and marshalled. There will be a comprehensive, compulsory, safety briefing at the start of the day for all drivers, followed by some slow “sighting laps” behind a lead car. There will be plenty of experienced trackheads present who will be only too happy give assistance to any novices. This is an awesome track - have a look at these threads for previous outings via these links (which are on the RX8OC forum);

Event Type: Open Pitlane.
“Open Pitlane” means you are free to drive on the circuit when you like, for as much as you like, subject to safe numbers on circuit. If you have a standard RX-8, then expect to get about 10-15 minutes on track with around 20-30 minutes to “cool-off”, else you, your engine, tyres and brakes will overheat! No idea about what punishment the RX-7\'s can take, but I\'m gueesing something similar if not race prepped.

Situated next to Little Budworth and is best accessed from the A54 or the A49. From the north take junction 19 off the M6 and follow the A556 through Northwich towards Chester, from the south leave the M6 at junction 18 and follow the A54.

Circuit Statistics:
Length: 2.7 miles
Corners:  11
Max Noise: 105dB Static, 92dB drive by at 20m

THE COST?:  The cost for this event is £169. However, if anyone is a fully paid up member of the MRC then the club shop is offering places with a discount of £20 “up-front”, so pay £149.

REQUIREMENTS: Helmets are required, and you MUST bring along your driving license (both parts if you have them) on the day for inspection.
EXTRA DRIVERS: £30.

INSURANCE: Insurance is not compulsory, but your normal road insurance is unlikely to cover you. Specialist trackday insurance is available, ask if you need further details.
INSTRUCTION: Mazda on Track have professionally qualified instructors available; £25 for one session (~20mins on track). These can be booked in advance, or on the day.
LOCAL ACCOMMODATION: Some people may want to stay locally the night before, the night after, or even both! Details of the recommended hotel(s) will be posted soon.

Should be up for this, will check timings and get it booked. If you haven\'t been for a while Oulton now has drive by noise limits, I was there on Saturday and got black flagged twice for 107 and 108 on drive by but I pass the static test (just). They only let me back on as I have an extra silencer I can fit.

Can\'t wait to see yours running again, please be there Neil :D

:) Just got that info this morning; £10 for each passenger to register for a wristband, £30 for each additional driver wristband.

Note to self.....take a comb, (have to look my best for the photo\'s) :Giggle

Plus, NickD has confirmed that garages are free too - probably means ~2-3 cars to a garage, but that\'s worked out OK in the past as there is plenty of space either side of the garages and we should be able to squeeze 2 cars in each garage anyway.

I\'ve just spent a good hour looking at accommodation in the area; based on location, number of rooms available, price, car parking, etc, I can\'t find anything that comes up better than where we stayed last year. That was at the Sandhurst hotel with the wonderful Rowena :)

I\'ve checked and they have 11 letting rooms available. On single occupancy, ensuite, with breakfast, these are £57.50 pp/pn. If people want to share a room, or bathroom, there are some cheaper deals to be had there too.

If we want an early (6.45am ish) breakfast on the Friday, Rowena can give us access to help yourself stuff and some baguettes to take away.

If anyone else can find any other sugegstions in the next couple of days then please PM me with details (please check the place has at least 8+ rooms available), else I\'ll post up here again by the weekend to confirm the Sandhurst booking details and will book myself in there on Thursday and Friday night :)

I think I\'ll book Thursday and Friday also when we decide where to stay, although after last time it became a very expensive room that I did not use :rollin

Pip thought we would max out between 470-480bhp at the flywheel. I\'ve got a twin plate Mazdaspeed (excedy) Clutch and a Mazdaspeed 1.5 way Diff going in the car on saturday :D

Still doesn\'t pick its feet up like neil\'s car because he has a much shorter final gear but I\'m looking forward to how it pulls with the the clutch and gear box. I feel I loose a lot of grunt with the clutch slipping on throttle.

Be Interesting to see how much better it pulls out of the corners.

Your more than welcome for a passenger ride to see how much difference the ball bearing turbo makes :D

Just bought some federal fz-201\'s actually but not put them on yet, supposed to be pretty good although I\'m still waiting for the pressure and temp data from the supplier. Be interesting to see how they compare to the dunlops.

Are they expensive compared to the 595RS or the 888\'s ??

Basically same price as 888\'s so about 50% more than the 595s, actual tread widths are higher too, similar to the fz-101 slicks.

Just reading about them, need 110psi to fit them to the bead because of the strength of the tyre wall. Looks extremely interesting and may consider them for the future :D

Just a quick "Heads Up" as some like to say.
The price on the day includes: Garages,Photography,Tuition and also snacks and drinks all day.
It is a ATDO standard day making insurance etc that bit easier,should you wish to get covered.
Tuition is from some of the best including Mike Wilds ( ex-formula  1 and Lemans driver ) http://www.mikewilds.com and also Sean Cooper who drivers in the Boxster Championship and various other race formats along with being a full time tutor.
The day will be run Open Pit Lane so no cues to go on track, like with some Tdo\'s.
As regards Cost well it is the "best value" Oulton day for several months it is the last sub £200 until we get to November, so if you wish to drive this great track and save some £ at the same time by not having to pay for extras book soon as they say.
If you just add up the value of the Garage,Tuition,Photography and snacks and drinks alone that would come to about £100.

Hmmm, tried to get the hotel booking sorted at ~6pm tonight. Couldn\'t get through on the phone and left a message. Rowena called back about an hour later saying could she call me back later to take the booking. Apparently, she she was very busy on the phone following the hotel\'s appearance on Channel 4\'s "4 in a bed" series, broadcast at 5.30pm this very evening! Never heard of the show, but the series is on Channel 4 on demand. Today\'s episode is not yet online, but last week\'s clearly shows Rowena and some footage of the hotel, plus her staying at a "rival" hotel in Blackpool.

Channel 4 quote "A new series of the show in which B&B owners take turns to stay with one another as they compete to see who provides the best value for money."

My room at The Sandhurst Hotel is booked for Thurs and Friday night at £57.50/night. To be fair to Rowena, it was her who called me back last night and then she called me again this morning.

Apparently, her hotel is featured TONIGHT on the Ch4 - the series runs DAILY this week. She said best not to call the hotel between 5pm and 7pm anyday this week whilst the series is running! Please mention you are part of the "Oulton Park Group" when you book, as it might help to keep a track later.

The show, unless it show the hotel to be a disaster, is likely to result in some extra demand for rooms, so suggest you book earlier rather than later to avoid disappointment!

HEADS UP, NickD of Mazdaontrack has 20 places reserved for us rotarytrackheads but as it is now only one month away he will need to release some of those places back to the public within the next 48 hrs.

So, if you are looking at this thread and DEFINATELY want to do this trackday (bargain price for a great circuit remember :Laugh) then please indicate by posting up here. Even if you are not in a position to pay for your place at this stage, but can do nearer the date, let me know now, or there may not be a place. At these prices I\'d be astounded if the event didn\'t sell out!

IMPORTANT: Can everyone who has not yet paid please do so by noon Friday this week (23rd). That way I can GUARANTEE people a place, with an extra discount if an MRC member. For anyone not able to pay up by the deadline there MAY be places still available later but I can offer no guarantee as I will have to release the remainder of our "reserved" block of 20 places by the weekend.  

Payment can be made via THIS LINK (http://www.rotaryshop.co.uk/boulton-park---friday-13th-aprilb-1674-p.asp); note the option on this page to pay £149 if you are a Full (paid up) MRC Club Member, or £169 if a guest (non paid up member).

After noon on Friday people will have to book direct via the Mazdaontrack website HERE (http://www.mazdaontrack.co.uk/oulton-park---friday-13th-april---full-opl-543-p.asp) and pay the full price, which is now £189.

You will note the price has gone up from the original £169. It is becoming accepted practice now to offer a discount to early bookings and when places fill up the last few places are sold at a higher cost.

So, people who book before Friday noon are getting a good discount over "Joe Public" who would currently have to pay £189 to book a place direct.

Trackday briefing for Oulton Park. Nothing much new for the regulars, but I urge everyone to at least skim read it soon to ensure you\'ve not missed anything :)

Can I assume that passengers will pay their tenner on the day when signing the indemnity form?

NickD has just posted this up onthe RX8OC thread;

"Dear All,

It is with sincere apologies that I need to inform the members intending to come on this day that the places are no longer available to us and therefore we are unable to honour any of the booked places. Money has been returned to the RX-8 OC.
I am personally very unhappy to have to do this. Communication and vat invoicing issues between Mazda on Track and the operator of the day, Open Track, has resulted in these places been sold directly by the operator to their customers. This situation occurred very rapidly in the latter part of last week while I was working at circuits and so out of email contact and thus unaware of the developing situation.

I was informed by text on Saturday morning that the places had been resold. Since then I have tried to work with the operator and MSV, the circuit owners, to allow additional places to run on the day, however despite the best efforts and several calls to MSV they are unwilling to extend the capacity beyond the now full day to allow this to happen and therefore I can not provide the original places.

I want to again apologise to all club members who I know will have been looking forward to this day and will have gone to particular effort to attend. If I can be of any assistance in dealing with any issues arising from this please let me know and I will do my best to help.

Mazda on Track

NickD phoned me earlier today to give the above news. To say I\'m "gutted" to hear this, especially so close to the event date, is an understatement of the highest proportion.

Although NickD has already done this, I have also spent well over an hour on phonecalls to David Woodall at Opentrack (who will be running the day), plus Jason and then Ian Berry at Motorsportvision (who hires out the many UK tracks, inc Oulton). Having spoken to these people to I can see no way of resurrecting the situation as all 80 places have been sold and there is a "hard wall" at the 80 limit which MSV are unable/unwilling to breach to include us. Ian has spoken to me at length about this limit and why they impose it. Had there been 3 or 4 extra places to accommodate I think we\'d have been OK, but 13 is impossible.

I will make arrangements for Lisa to return payments directly to source. We may need to get in touch with people in some cases to confirm where the money is to be sent, if unclear.

Obviously, to avoid any hotel cancellation fees, I urge anyone with a hotel booking to contact the hotel asap. I shall be doing this next.

Well, I never thought that Friday 13th would turn out to be unlucky in this way :(  My apologies to everyone who was looking forward to this day. I\'m so disappointed myself, so I know how you must all be feeling. I will be seriously reviewing the process for booking future trackdays to avoid any repetition.

Wow, this is a shock !! and without stating the obvious I too am \'gutted\'. I have been working feverously to have the RX ready for the 13th.

Lisa has just made a very sensible suggestion which I\'m happy to personally run with. Everyone who has paid for a place at Oulton has their money sitting safely in the MRC bank account. For anyone who is planning to drive at Oulton Park on the new date, are you happy to leave the money there and pay any extra when I\'ve sorted a final price? It\'ll save a lot of work for Lisa and means the bill for OP won\'t be as bad when the extra comes to be paid ;)

If you do need the cash back, just let Lisa know your bank details.

I missed your post somehow Shaun! I just hope the day we\'ve got in June turns out to have even better weather :cool. The tanker driver dispute looks as thought it\'s coming to a settlement, so that ought not to be an issue either.

So, for me at least, Autosolo last Sunday (my compensation for not getting to OP) - in which I managed 1st in Class (13th out of 56 overall), so well chuffed about that. Next "action" is Japfest on 12th May, then OP on 12th June, then Snetterton 26th July. Looking good :)

Should be good, car booked in just before Japfest for final Tune, should make some fun bhp :Giggle

I have reserved 4 adjacent garages for us, so ~3 cars per garage, unless anyone wants to bag another one for themselves! I asked if they could "do a deal" so we\'ve got 4 garages for the price of 3 - £90. I\'ll be paying on the day with a credit card so if we are all sharing I\'ll need to collect £7 from everyone to cover the cost. Please bring some change if you can!!

If it rains (which it won\'t of course :D) we might be needing them....

Briefing pack for Oulton Park is attached for download. Many of you will know the drill by now, but I would urge everyone to at least "skim read" it to confirm nothing has been overlooked!

Does Oulton really have a 92db drive-by limit!? I can\'t imagine either my old DC5 (which I went to Oulton in twice) or my FD would pass that, but 105 static is no problem (measured 97db at Cadwell the other week).

They claim to have a drive by, but it\'s measured at 20 metres, so your exhaust would have to be really loud to fail it. I\'ve not known anyone to get caught by it and, if you did, I would expect it to be a warning from the organisers and a need to "lift off" at a certain part of the circuit to "pass". I have seen the need for a REALLY LOUD RX-7 to do this at another circuit in the UK. He passed the static, but only just! You are quite a long way inside the 105dB as the loud level DOUBLES every 3dB

A mate of mine with an MX-5 has made a last minute booking on to this day, if there\'s a spare space in a garage would anyone mind if he chucks in the requisite cash to use it?

Having a couple of issues, hopefully nothing I can\'t fix. My alternator bearings are squeaking badly and my bias adjuster has popped out of the dash !

Think I have a spare Alternator and I\'ve dug the adjuster out of the dash ! Need to get the spanners out when I get home. Nothing Like last minutes issues !

Rears are locking up too much on my new pads so may need to swap them back too !

Out doing a last minute run of the car yesterday and did a few heavy breaks from ~50 and the rears locked up which was odd.  Put it down to rust on the disks as the car hadn\'t been run for 4 weeks.

Imagine my delight to arrive at the "gearbox specialist" to collect my car at 5pm, to find them having just fitted some new rubber hoses to my wastegate (not actually sure what these are for, but the old ones had unsurprisingly disintegrated with the heat and they wanted to replace them before starting the car). Fine, glad they spotted it and sorted it, but it meant they hadn\'t wanted to start the car and check the box.

When they did, the clutch wouldn\'t engage far enough to allow gear selection. Cue 40 minutes of messing around through the inspection hatch with no joy and the decision that the only way to sort it would be to remove the box (again). Tomorrow morning.

So there\'s no way I can make the trackday, despite the fact that they have had over two weeks to sort this and didn\'t actually get the box out until last Thursday. Very, very unhappy. :(

Does anyone know of someone who will take my place? I have every intention of getting the garage to cover my costs, although I\'m not sure they will and frankly as they have over £10k of my FD in their possession, I\'m perhaps not in the greatest negotiating position, but they did say they would "sort something out". In the expectation that they might not agree to the full amount, do you think say £75 for the day is fair enough and if I get full compensation, I\'ll contribute the cash to MRC?

Very last minute I know, so if you know of anyone who\'d be interested, let them know NOW! It\'s booked in the name of Ian Lockwood, no reason somebody can\'t take my place. Malcolm, I will PM you with regards to the technicalities of that.

Balls, that isn\'t good news at all :(

I have fixed the squeak of the pulley, turned out the spacer on the idler pulley was wrong (been doing some test fitting of a little project and needless to say it wasn\'t right). Fixed the adjuster, have a feeling its never been fitted :eek Took car out again and it was still locking the rears so I\'ve swapped back to my part worn pads. Bringing the others as a get me home pair but hopefully the original pads will last the day if I wind as far forward as possible !

Made it home safely... still got the judder somewhere on the left side after an Elise decided to tag me heading up clay hill into druids.  Couldn\'t see anything wrong with the rear suspension, am wondering if he managed to tag the front wheel as well - there are some suspect marks just forwards of the door...

Was a tad exciting at approaching 90mph.

Indeed - had the rear off, checked for roundness and re-balanced (to <10g out) by Nick but the vibration is still there.

It\'s matched to road speed/wheel rotation, I\'ll have to get the front checked as there\'s a possibility that there was light contact there.

I did slam on and lock up the fronts after getting clouted @90ish so I\'m wondering if it could be a monumental flat-spot on the front.  Will have a look this weekend.

Apart from the early end to the day it was absolutely cracking - great to meet everyone!

My dissapointment was erradicated as a passenger in your 8 for a few \'hot\' laps !!

Will you be looking at a smaller turbo too ?? First Time I\'ve really been able to stretch the FD\'s legs and the boost coming out of the corners was fantastic !

Looks like I\'ll be spending all my money keeping the FD running !! without having any spare cash to carry out upgrades !!
 
Still have to buy a replacement gearbox and now steering parts.
 
I wonder if the steering problem was the cause of the severe judder I was experiencing under hard braking ?

I\'ve just home got myself, having stayed over an extra night with Hypothermia, Ian.Mothersole and CJR in Middlewich. We had a really excellent meal at the Sandhurst Hotel with a few drinks to wind down after a fantastic day.

It seems everyone enjoyed the day, despite various "issues" mentioned above. For me the combination of great people, great cars, great track and perfect weather were the main ingredients for success. It is so much more fun to have a group on these days. Thankyou to everyone who took me out as a passenger too - it\'s always interesting to compare driving techniques as we all have our own unique track driving "style"  :)

So, thanks from me for everyone, regulars and newbies, who came along to make it all work  :Thumbs-up

If anyone has any pics or videos then post them up here to save starting another thread - Steve\'s already started I see! I\'ll post up some of my video later.

Here\'s a video of a couple of my laps; very pleased with the 2m12s and 2m10s shown here, which is ~10 seconds better than my times last year!

The "glitch" in the video is a "Movie Maker" issue! Timestamp is accurate as it glitches too. Original two files have no glitch - thanks Microsoft!

Definitely shows the grunt difference. My corner speed just isn\'t as good as the rx8 though. Looks amazingly stable through the bends though compared to how it feels in the drivers seat !

Shaun you seem to be losing out on the corners big style. Are you sure you\'ve got your break set-up right? I could be wrong but you seem to be struggling to slow down so you put more into the pedal and then get too much breaking and lose the corner speed. Either that or you need to get to the gym and put some more muscles on them legs!!!!!!

Loosing the ABS has something in it. On Cascades (running down the hill) there is a heavy dip that if I brake late I\'ll run out of road ! I\'ve been in the passenger seat going into the gravel trap ! I probably brake early to make sure I actually stop as well !

I don\'t think the initial bite is high on the brakes, but putting more biting pads in just made me lock the wheels up. I possibly need more aggressive pads in the front to get more out of the brakes, but all it may do is lock the fronts up.

Maybe I need stronger legs ! Although I should let you try out my brakes and see what pressure I have to use to stop !

When I pulled my pads out at Lunch I did have a problem with the rears and the braking felt better in the afternoon with fresh pads.

Yeah sounds like your gonna have to play around with the pads until you find something that suits you and the car more. Then you\'ll have more confidence in it I guess.

Oh and I know how hard the brake pedal is, I\'ve seen you hobbleing after a day at the track!

Did very well though, I only ran out of leg on the last session of the day :Giggle

Car probably needs dropping a bit more as well, but the speed bumps round me may stop that !
