i was always under the impression that the rx7 was in a lower road tax bracket.... is it just the FD that has cheaper tax?, mine says £118 for 6 month

What is the CC on your log book, tax on older cars is done on CC. If your log book sayus 2354cc (like most uk log books) then its in the higher braket, if its 1308cc (like it should be) then you pay less. I guess you could just send the log book off and try and change it to 1308cc, but they might have had a million people try it before you?

martin ... CC on logbook is 2654cc ......
so shud it be 1308cc ???

Post by: B.Martin on February 21, 2012, 02:28:49 PM
Well the rotary engine is indeed 1308cc, but the uk double the FD and the RX-8 (2616) for taxation purposes. The UKDM FC\'s are usually 2354cc on the logbook, but the truth is the Mazda 13b engine is 1308cc, not sure why your says 2645cc thought sounds like someones right ballsed that up on registry!

Yours being perhaps an import might be registered as a 1.3, before 2001 tax was either above 1549cc or below 1549cc, £71.50 for 6 months if below (ie registered as a 1.3) or £118.25 if above 1549cc (ie registered as a 2.4 or 2.6) my UK spec FC is registered in the above 1549cc bracket.

It should be down as a 2.6 ltr really but most people put down the equivalent cubic size of 1308cc when registered on import which isnt technically incorrect. I believe the dvla
decided to tax them as a 2.6ltr as another engine size of equivalent output. Theres not really a right ot wrong, just luck of the draw when you buy an rx.

Id be interested to know how people have re-registered cars without the dvla questioning it.

I think some people have managed it by showing proof from the manufacter stating the actual displacement, but its better than it being taxxed on CO2 like the RX8s etc

The best option is at rebuild time, get a different engine number and change it with that.

The dvla are now wise to this and to my knowledge you will find it very hard to get it changed nowadays.

im actualy just off the phone to them, they said if i take my v5, tax disk, mot, insurance and documentation stating the correct CC to my local dvla office (glasgow), they will change over the tax disks for me the same day and sort it out, will also re-emburse any moneys owed from the tax.... just need to figure out how to get evidence of the actual CC... will a mazda dealer do this?

I don\'t mean its wrong or anything,  mine is 1308 on log book but something technical to do with rotary only having 3 combustion cycles which affects our calculated cubic capacity,or something

Somebody throw me a bone here

My log book states both a chassis and engine number, the engine number is 13BE009xxx.

So it must have one somewhere or it wouldn\'t be on the log book.

Right guys, sorry to resurect an old thread but i\'ve been on the phone to the DVLA today about this very subject. To get the log book changed from 2354cc to 1308cc all you need is a letter from Mazda stating the the car is infact a 1308cc and not 2354cc, i spoke to Mazda in Nottingham and a friendly guy there has said he can do that for me.

Now let me tell you an amusing story, as you all know i\'m over in Cyprus where, might i add the law on Rotary Enginged vehicles is that they are 1308cc. When bringing a car to Cyprus you have to pay an import duty on my car @ 1308cc the duty is around €150. Now on the same car but with a CC of 2354cc that price suddenly becomes €2500!!!

This is also the same with the actual \'registry costs\' to register the car as 1308cc the price is €100 and registry on 2354cc is €1500. And get this Rotary owners, the road tax on 1308cc in Cyprus is €100 p/a and on the 2354cc the road tax is €500 p/a!!! Of course becuase i\'m English no one is preppared to help me with this so i have to do it myself in order not to be ripped off.

The first scentence should help people out that want to change this though :)

I\'d love to get this changed so any tips would be good

Also, from people that have managed to get the log book changed to say 1308c, has insurance worked out any better or do you still have to get insured as a 2354c?
Title: road tax
Post by: B.Martin on April 23, 2012, 03:28:09 PM
Ah your insuring an RX7 mate, its done on the insurance group not on the CC ;)
Title: road tax
Post by: grinder on April 23, 2012, 04:22:31 PM
im sure that when i did mine , i changed the log book aswell .. im sure there is an engine size box , so i updated the to 1308 cc
Title: road tax
Post by: rx-dave on April 23, 2012, 04:36:19 PM
I doubt very much that you\'ll get it down to 1308cc now   The last RX7 i got through as a 1308cc was around a year ago then some smart ass youngster picked me up on it :2Mad
I got a call from that lovely person saying that the volumetric output is that of a 2616cc to which i replied that the form asks only for the cc and not an \'ouput\'. I refused to pay the extra until i was informed the tax disc would be cancelled leaving the vehicle untaxed that would lead to it being clamped...............i shall post you a cheque then i said as i\'d already sold it and didn\'t need the grief!!
Best of luck but don\'t hold your breath!!

I have been very lucky with Brighton DVLA, registered 3 cars recently as 1308, but the 3rd one got picked up by a different person processing the documents and had to be registered as 2616.  Although with planned changes and possible closure of all local DVLA offices, it will mean all paperwork goes directly to Swansea and I cant see any getting registered as 1308

Perhaps your right, hopefully they will view my circumstances as different as I am exporting. Hope so anyway because frankly the car isn\'t worth the amount charged for either the import tax or the registry fee\'s!

Quote from: rx-dave;820644I got a call from that lovely person saying that the volumetric output is that of a 2616cc to which i replied that the form asks only for the cc and not an \'ouput\'.

Just so everyone is aware of the mathematical logic involved in this calculation (it\'s not just doubled arbitrarily), it\'s like this...

We start with a 2 rotor engine of 1308cc...
Each rotor actually has 3 combustion chambers so 1308 * 3 = 3924cc
But each stroke take 1.5 times longer than a piston engine so 3924 / 1.5 = 2616cc (as on the RX8 V5C)

However, I have yet to work out where the 2354cc comes from on the FC V5Cs, I\'m still working on it, I\'ll let you know when/if I find out.
Title: road tax
Post by: grinder on April 24, 2012, 12:45:21 PM
i suppose you can do

3924 / 1.6666 = 2354

But thats an odd number to calc by ?
Title: road tax
Post by: B.Martin on April 24, 2012, 02:19:43 PM
What would the result be based on the 12a capacity? Perhaps they based it on the FB RX-7 so they could charge on importation.
Title: road tax
Post by: BinoX on April 24, 2012, 10:00:31 PM
A 12a, using those calculations, would be 2292...

I don\'t know what a V5C would actually say for a 12a engined car though

Hi,

I now own the rx7 that rising son originally posted this thread for.

Once a received the documents in my name I went to the dvla office in Glasgow with as much supporting evidence as i could gather. We even had a V5 from another import fc we have registered as a 1300, handbook extracts and mazda parts letters quoting the engine size.

They seemed quite helpful but said that they just need to take photo copy and speak to someone in their main office.

Two days later i get a phone call from a dvla man who has been well versed on rotorys and said that they can not change the cc details of an rx7 import after it has been initially registered in the country, so im stuck with paying tax for 2.6 !!

this guy had been well prep\'d and knew exactly what say for every argument,

I hope you guys have more luck at your local offices!!

I just bought 2 (both early FCs).. The vert is a turbo and on the dvla database as a 1.3.  The coupe is on the database as a 2.6.

My main problem is where I live in London the council charge you for the size of your engine because of emissions... bearing in mind that a car produces no emmisions when parked. 1300cc=75 quid / 2500+cc=391 quid!!!
Anyway even though the coupe is for sale I will try my luck with amending the V5 with as much printed documentation as possible, including a letter from Mazda.  From what people have said it is down to chance so if I get a rejection I will re-send to another local office and so on :D
