Well, they have shown photos of the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ, its got a 2 litre 197bhp boxer engine, I guess tuned should just about make 400bhpish?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
?? eh??
standard spec is same as fc lol
though 42mpg? im not too sure on a boxer engine..
plus real pita to change spark plugs in the legacys, nt sure about other boxer engines.
random post lol
I\'m interested but reserving judgement until I can take one for a test drive
ignore my post
I reckon it\'s going to be surprisingly similar to an RX8.

But with added economy?
It will be ace... you seen the poverty spec version the japs are getting?
has anyone seen the BRZ GT300 version? it looks good
i think its direct injection so that will be cheap to fix;)
Im sure checking the big end bearings will also be easy
Sorry, but a sportscar is a car you are supposed to have fun in. If you buy a sportscar and think about fuel economy... in my eyes you dont own the car for its true purpose...
:)
The car is awesome though :)
I love the idea of the poverty spec version. I wish more car companies did this in England.
The car looks great and the spec sheet seems pretty nifty...
Still, not a Rotary though is it? ;)
Whilst i get it, i dont get it if that makes sense!
I think that is more to do with the fact Toyota are already playing with superchargers, so this version seems to me, to be a watered down, meets emission requirements across their range and then we get the daddy version later!
Its certainly not good to look at either!
There is already a TRD version & If a supercharged version is coming out then that would be good for sure :D
Shouldn\'t they be sporty anyway, you shouldn\'t need to bolt things to a sports car to make it sporty
So no modifying then? lol
Quote from: Ricco_04;811932So no modifying then? lol
My FC can increase its power by 50% just with a few bolt ons to the standard system, I don\'t need to add on anything extra like a turbo charger to a supercharger, its already got one as OEM
Sounds like they have put the correct equidistant exhaust headers on the boxer engine
Yep, sounds a bit rough to be honest, but I guess you get used to a smooth engine with a rotary!
Im curious at how they get a combined mpg of 42 out of a boxer engine! You would be lucky to see half that on a Imprezza, yes i know they are turbo\'d, but even being delicate didnt see 25 on mine!
Never venture above 3000 rpm or half throttle probably. I once watched an economy trial for the Extra Urban cycle, the level of concentration that the operator was using was something akin to some form of meditation. Never mind focussing on the sound of one hand clapping, focus on getting 42 mpg from a Toyota GT86!
Yeah I think 42 is a bit optimistic!! It will be better cause its "an all new" engine weras the old ej had been going for about 20 years. Plus its not having to drive extra diffs which will help.
They didn\'t really like it on Top Gear last night lol
I have had a bit of discussion about this on pistonheads! Whilst i like the concept, i think its a bit pricey, it looks shocking (a matter of taste of course) and in relative terms these days, low hp. I know that is kind of the concept but in the era of cars this harks back to, the lightweight buzzy, rwd fine handling coupes, they were actually relatively fast for their day! This isnt or wont be! The argument on pistonheads is, if you want a rwd, lightweight etc car, its the only thing on the market, im not sure that makes me want one tbh!
If it is so good and produced for a particular market that everyone is calling for, why are they already playing with superchargers?
I know everyone is saying that 197 bhp isn\'t a huge amount but what were the rx8 when they came out? Around the same bhp I believe?
If it is light weight and have great handling characteristics like the rx8 it would surely be a great car to drive?
And it sure as hell would out perform a rusty FC around a track thats for sure.

Do not disagree at all buddy, sure they will drive and handle just fine, but, think the novelty and lack of power will wear off very quickly!
Yes they will, I wasn\'t to sure on the car but it seems good but could do with 100HP more. If it looked more like the GT300 version I would want one.
Depends on how good the chassis actually is. With 200bhp you stand half a chance of being able to use it on the road without being in court with some pious tosspot of a magistrate telling you you\'re a menace to society driving your powerful car at such speeds when he\'s just fined the smack addict half what he\'s fined you for putting a pensioner in hospital by assaulting him for his pension because "He\'s going to go to rehab."
Yes, I\'m bitter, I used my uncle\'s 350 bhp Saph cossie on the A47 and I got in trouble because I wanted to see what full boost in third felt like for 5 seconds and there was camera.
lack of power.. no probs.. HKS is developing a supercharger kit for this :p
(http://www.hks-power.co.jp/products/project/hks86/img/86_img_01.jpg)
Well we just have to look at the handling of an impreza to see if the handling will be any good, and if the chassis will be any good. As far as I\'m aware they handle like they are on rails.
If the subota/toybaru can perform as good as an rx8 and retain better mpg then I think it will be a good car.
Will, full boost for 5 seconds in a cossie equals naughty naughty.
Yep, I went through the camera at 91 mph with the brakes smoking.

Hahaha, sweet.
Well, I like idea to use boxer engine on it. Like rotary, its quite rare. They are good engines.
I can see the potential of that car, it could be a cult car in future... :)
I hope it does well, then I hope Mazda release a car of similar design as competition (with a RE of course). Grant it\'s hardly fair to compare a 2012 spec sports car with a 1990 £1500 \'rusty\' FC, the FC is/was a great car for it\'s era and you should show it more respect. ;)
Well Mitch was comparing power comparisons so I compared other things. I do like FCs but they have got to have wide kits on them to look right.
TBH I think Mazda might have sold more FCs than FDs so I can\'t really criticise them can I.
I would hope mazda release a new rotary engine car, but the only way I can see them doing it to meet the emmisions stuff will be in an underpowered car or by going completely bonkers and making a rival for the new GTR
I think this toybaru would be more appealing if it looked like the BRZ GT300.

I am sure i read somewhere they are trying to develop a laser rather than spark plug to burn the fuel more efficently so they can meet modern emissions!
Yes I remember Prof telling us about it. I would imagine it burns better and maybe the laser is firing for longer to burn the fuel better.
The biggest problem is the oil lubricating the engine which causes dirty emmisions. If they used the right materials they could probably go without lubricating the seals??
Maybe a from factory WI system might be used to clean up the emmisions too?
I heard that they had plans for a new RE car and that Mazda had more or less achieved said economy figures, however I understand this comment is useless without a source to quote but I forget where I read it, pretty sure it was on Facebook. Maybe someone else has heard a similar thing?
as much as I\'d love to see another turbo\'d mazda RE from factory I doubt it\'ll happen. The only real future for the rotary imo is to use it as a range extender and mazda seem to be the only people that have the experience with RE\'s to do it.
As for this toyota, looks sweet, must hadle well and i bet its a hoot to drive!
Quote from: jetpilot;812228I am sure i read somewhere they are trying to develop a laser rather than spark plug to burn the fuel more efficently so they can meet modern emissions!
Yup I read that in one of the Banzai magazines a few months back. Whatever helps without loosing performance is good by me!

We use a chemical in our lorries at work called \'add blu\' which reduces emmissions - works in pretty much the same way so it must be possable :)
I was having a look on google today, but it seems there isn\'t much about in regards to a new rotary engined car being released. We live in hope though, I was thinking they could even use this subaru/Toyota chassis and replace it with a RE powerplant. Perhaps that\'s an idea for one of the tuners.

So long as it has a pretty top :)
Sadly it seems that the RE probably won\'t be around longer in new cars. and the destined place for them will be in museums:(
In all honest I will probably go to a piston powered car once I have achieved what I want with my rotary powered beast.
