Yesterday i was driving home from work in the dark, i saw a speed camera van in its usual place i wasnt really speeding anyway it was something like 42 in a 40 but i let off the accelerator anyway as i was approching the :censored: money trap. Well anyway it flashed red as i went past and since at the very most i was doing 41mph i cant see it being for speeding, anyone have any ideas?
I dont have a front number plate which i thought could be it but then if thats the case whats the point in flashing me if they dont have my details?
Ash
lol, if you dont have a front plate (like me) its prob because of that, if you definately were\'nt speeding that is. If you were speeding, who cares, they dont know who you are.
I have been pulled a few times because of the lack of front number plate however. Result = £30 fine and a ticket to get it sorted and stamped by an MOT garage. Black tape does the job to hold it on to get the ticket stamped lol.
I hate the robbing, thieving, money grabbing, delusional, tax payer costing, anal exits.
That is all.
might have been a tax camera van?

Do they take their info from number plates or from reading the disc?
I did see a tax camera van earlier in the day on the same road but i was in a different car with trade plates but im sure it wasnt the same van.
Is there no points for not having a plate? mind you they cant send me a letter if they dont know my reg ha.
I definetly wasnt speeding though, :censored: traffic cops
Yes they take the info from the tax disc, , if they also cant see the number plate its a court apearence under section 16 of the road traffic act, driving a motor vehicle with intent to decieve by not having the front number plate in the correct position on the front of the vehicle.
They seem to like crushing cars and making you pay them to do it, depending on county normally £1000 and 3 points........
Wow, Ive been pulled maybe 4/5 times in all for no front plate, couple times got away with it completely and the others were a £30 fine. Maybe there coming down harder on this now!?
This is a real grey area!
I can find no information to suggest number plate offences are points endorsable. Even more so when bikes show no front number plate under the above circumstances!
i know its an mot fail not to have a front no plate
Quote from: wolfie1;809394i know its an mot fail not to have a front no plate
Or one that is not properly secured!
there is a heap of stuff on this that constitutes as an rfr- delaminated, dirty, honeycomb effect, incorrect characters, something that changes the appearance eg a no plate bolt in the middle of a 0 which makes it look like an 8, i could go on! thats my job :Giggle
Speaking of which, why are german style number plates such an issue. More to the point, why are the rest of europe allowed that particular font but we arent?
Here is Cyprus the font is not an issue as long as its clearly readable.
because they are ANAL! only reason i can think off. mot is supposed to be to make sure your car is up to a minimum safe standard yea, then why does a no plate light not working fail!
A curious topic. I have always pondered the regs and usual strict enforcement of number plate characters/spacing etc. If you saw a car speeding by, if you were Police, what are you more likely to remember, and this is plate from round my way, FA57 CAR or FAST CAR or another JET 80Y or JETBOY?
the coolest plate i have ever seen was k1nky, there is also a porsche going about and the plate reads gr34sy i think (i know its meant to say greasy). like that fast car 1 :Thumbs-up
For me, JET BOY, for sure :yes

Some one must own AR07 ARY (AROT ARY)? That would be rather epic.
the flash of red will be the infra-red, its only visible in the right place, I.E, when looking at it straight on, hence why it looked like it flashed.
ANPR cameras always have it on, although its more prominent at night when it needs more infra red to view the plates.
everything is done by numberplates now, its all linked to the DVLA database saying if you have tax or not or any outstanding warrants etc etc, so your tax disc is nothing but a piece of paper.
as long as you have a legal numberplate displayed at the front and rear of your vehicle, you can\'t get done, but if you have wrong font or sizes, you could get done for it if the copper is having a bad day.
as with the speed, its all about something called the eighty fifth percentile, whereby its the speed limit, add 15% and thats the limit they use for prosecution or not, so in a 30mph zone the eighty fifth percentile will be 34.5mph, generally they don\'t pull anyone going 35mph, but again, get a copper on a bad day and he may try and make it stick.
if you get people moaning about being done for going 31mph in a 30 zone, its usually because they were going 36mph. It\'s to allow differences in speedos etc (ever wonder why your speedo is set to show 30mph where you may only be doing 27mph on your satnav...?)
An interesting point, what do you really rely on more when driving, gps speed readings or speedo? I know i should trust my gps reading more, so in theory on my daily which is a Delica, when my gps shows 50 mph, my speedo actually shows about 54 - 55 mph, so with the above theory implied you could assume that it will only flash at 57.5 mph! I would imagine its more like 10%, so lets say 55 mph, at that speed on gps my speedo would show about 58 - 59 mph!
I havent got the bottle to travel through with the speedo showing 58 mph, although i am absolutely positive the gps reading will be more accurate.
I have also been driving down a motorway at 80mph showing on the speedo, satnav showing 71mph and seen a Police car, slowed to match their speed, 70 on the speedo, again i havent got the bottle to go past at the more accurate satnav reading!
Nope, it\'s 15%, trust me, it\'s what I do for a living. Why do you reckon theres been a whole big thing in the news lately about changing the limit to 80 because the police rarely pull over anyone going between 70-80mph

So a fixed camera on a 50, wont go off till 57.5 mph and average speed also a5 50 mph wont prosecute unless your average is over 57.5 mpg?
I\'ve read up on a few of these things(and it may be wrong but),
If the limit is 30 then 30 is the law,no if\'s no buts.
Its up to each constabulary to decide how much over they will allow somebody to go on certain roads befor prosecution.
So one constabulary say here in cornwall for instance may decide to allow 4mph over the limit befor prosecution, where as a constabulary in essex may be more tighter and prosecute if your doing 31.
Number one rule if you do get pulled is be the nicest person in the world and honest, if you were speeding your had, its how you play the last moments that you may just be able to dig yourself out the hole, if your polite and seemingly remorsefull you may just get a b@llicking at the side of the road, if you start questioning them telling them are are wrong and start churning out a tale, they will just write you out their ticket.
That said if your done automatically thats it!
Ash I was only joking in post 7 about them crushing cars for no numberplate lol- well afaik anyway :-)
Your right Rob, your attitude is definately the key influencer most of the time.
Secondly, i\'m pretty sure your allowed 10% nothing more.
Fixed cameras i\'m not sure on, as they use electric loops in the road, but radar and average speed cameras, yeah, 57.5mph.
I\'ve been working as a traffic surveyor since I was 12, so 12 years later, I\'ve picked a few bits up. Not sure how things work on the police/enforcement side of things, but I know when we do the surveys for camera sites, they use the eighty-fifth percentile for "wiggle room".
But, knowing this doesn\'t mean I won\'t make sure I\'m going 30mph through a 30 camera. It\'s a dark art, especially when money grabbing, thieving government flanges are concerned.
I always thought it was 10% plus 2, anymore and youll get pulled. So 30 would be 35, 70 would be 79 etc. The rule ive always used anyway lol.
According to my mate the Copper, 10% plus two is the current guidance on issuing fixed penalty notices for exceeding the limit from the Crown Prosecution Service, however there\'s leeway for Police discretion and interpretation within those. For instance, you may get away with 80-85 on a quiet bit of motorway however you\'re probably going to get a ticket for 31 in a 30 limit near a school at going-home time. They\'re also more likely to consider pursuing things like "Driving without due care and attention" if you\'re caught speeding near schools or other pedestrian-heavy urban areas.

So it probably didnt flash me? Well i\'ll find out soon enough if it did
no it wouldn\'t, they don\'t need to flash, the infra-red may of increased in power somewhat to compensate for the glare of your lights and because it didnt have anything to reflect off of (I.E. numberplate).
