I\'ve been with virgin for nearly 3 years for TV, phone, mobile and broadband.
Last week I upgraded from 20mb to 100mb.... and my speed has gotten worse.
Anyone else here with Virgin had similar troubles?
I have the virgin 50 meg, used to get constant 50meg and higher but lately it\'s dropped down to 28meg and I can tell its so much slower, keep meaning to ring them and ask what\'s going on, might be the router?? Used to down load a movie in 6mins. Now it takes 12-20 :(
It\'s unusual solar activity causing a gaussian field in the fibre optic carrier - causes a modulation affect resulting in severe distortion and hence loss of data bandwidth.....
.... or it could just be crap service :Giggle
i did the same with bt infinity. If i connect to the router with a cable its fine.
Tried that?
yep... its generally just :censored::censored::censored::censored:e :(

Mitch - why have you wired your super computer with cheese straws ? :Giggle
How do you test what your download speed is?
Quote from: johnf;809114How do you test what your download speed is?
Google \'broadband speed test\' and select the first option. Follow onscreen instructions
Loads of sites will claim to test your speed e.g. http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/
I used to have fun with virgin when I was with them, my mum ended up with free hd because of their mess abouts.

Infinity router is pants - we got a Netgear one and it\'s fine now. Got four spare BT hubs if anyone wants one! :Giggle
I\'ll take them
I\'m with Virgin, speed goes up and down, if you ring them they can check your line and flush it if needed. You\'ll probably spend 6 hours on the phone talking to someone in Pakistan first trying to explain that your not a retard and the router is switched on!
I use the first result on google aswell (speedtest.net) to check mine.

I used to be with Virgin and their broadband and TV were fab but you\'re right - phone up with a problem and they make you turn everything off and on again a few times even if you\'ve already tried all the normal stuff. In the end I managed to get an email address for Neil Berkett and that soon got it sorted!
Can\'t get Virgin in MK. :(
Interesting - got a letter this morning from BT. To \'maintain quality of service\' they are swapping all their Infinity routers - obviously worked out at last how pants they are.
What are the upload speed of the BT infinity? I get 4.5 meg with virgin. Super fast!!
Currently coming up as this:

There was a thread about this somewhere SeanP had a really good speed if I remember and someone on Virgin had more than double what I was getting!
i have all 3 with sky and its faultless, always found virgin great with everything except media.
:D

does you\'re netgear aloow the same speed over wireless as with a cable?

Yes I believe so - the speed test I posted is wireless.
Well virgin have just upgraded all 10mb broadband to 20mb broadband - I guess could this put strain on the network?
2 weeks no internet north london...virgin suck.
I hope everyone with BT Infinity realise that you are also a WiFi access point for anyone and everyone in the vicinity, unless you have turned the access off, which BT do not make a point of telling you about. :(

good point Ray - that was another good reason not to use their router (as well as it being pants!)
Neil\'s now had two calls trying to arrange to install the new router. They won\'t just send it so he keeps telling them we don\'t want it then - they don\'t seem to understand. :Giggle
Ann in my line of work getting BT to understand even the simplest of instructions seems to be totally beyond them, you wait until you want them to grasp anything technical.:Grrr:censored:

I know Ray.
We had a nightmare getting Infinity installed - the Open Reach guys would be on the phone to BT trying to explain the problem and they just didn\'t seem to get it. When we finally got it the modem was dropping a dozen or more times a day - Neil and I both work from home a lot so that\'s just not on. Their answer was to keep sending replacement routers - so we just brought a Netgear one and it\'s been fine.
Now they have finally acknowledged that their routers are pants they wonder why we don\'t want a new one - or rather the poor company they have outsourced the work to don\'t get why we don\'t want one.
Well, its been over a week now... ben using the Virgin Media support forum - and frankly it\'s looking terrible for a lot of people.
They are suggesting I nbeed to use it purely as a modem and switch off the hubs wireless system to test the line...
*sigh* Why should I the end user have to test and report on the faults on a product that has been installed less than 10 days and has never provided even 50% of the advertised service...
*mutter mutter mutter*
^^^^^^ Brett, as Ann has found out you could probably resolve your problem by ditching their cable modem and buying a Netgear DSL modem, I would suggest although there are others.
NETGEAR DG834G Wireless-G Router with Built-in DSL Modem
Set up is almost plug and play and comes with NATS and an effective Firewall all for about £50
I prob will - but I\'m gonna make Virgin tech supports lives hell for awhile first... >cue evil laughter<
