Post by: rising son on January 19, 2012, 04:37:43 PM
just today out of the blue im getting what can only be described as i grinding feeling through the steering wheel... only a very faint noise when turning, however when reversing with some angle on the steering wheel im getting a loud grinding noise and its kinda holding the car back a little... unsure from which side its coming from, and ive not touched anything... been doing it all day.. any ideas?... brake related maybe due to the car being held back a little... realy not sure, its a wierd 1

If your car is the T2, then it could possibly be the sterring column nuckle hitting the Turbo heatshield if it\'s come lose - happened to Mitch on here.

Phantom problem you say?

But seriously, check in the engine bay on the turbo side, you might find that a heat shield bolt has come lose or sheered causing it to knock against the knuckle - kinda bad placement! You should be able to move it out the way if so.

The turbo heatshield is in two parts and falls onto the steering rack when it comes away from its mounting i can\'t remember exactly as it was a while ago when i did it, i used some mole grips to hold the two pieces together and put a few spots of weld on it, It\'s held up well so far.

Some people remove the heatshield completly but i woudn\'t advise that as mine got so hot even with the thing on it melted the windscreen washer pipe! :3Confused

Mine did this too. Quick weld fixed it as above.

Maybe worth giving the brake pads a check for wear or possibly a siezed piston in a caliper draging a pad or anti ratle shim scratching at the disk ?
all easy stuf to eliminate. May also be worth checking the front wheel bearing and give the wheels a good pull in each direction while the cars up ?

solved the problem today.... feel so stupid for not finding it before but didnt think my mate was this useless..... he was helping me with my brakes and he must have lost a washer from the top calliper bolt, put it in and it was flush with the disk... big groove in my new disk now :(   but sorted none the less.... didnt think to check this... hes in the bad books now
