Been watching a lot of rx8 track action round Castle Combe on You tube! ....mainly Wil66 and Clive .....Can i ask you guys what mods and what times you were doing?
not giving to much away at the moment as best laid plans.....but i have just sold my vx220 ......and my 7 is too old and.........:3gears-rh
I\'ve got Racing Brake 4 piston callipers on the front, Racing Brake Discs all round, ET500 pads and Cusco Zero II coilovers and I was running Toyo R888s, I\'ve got a RB intake and catback and a Toyosports Decat. According to my video I reckon I\'m going round in about 1:29-1:30. I know Clive\'s car has Tein Suspension, the same brakes but more aggressive pads and the Full Racing Beat Exhaust as well as the intake, I think he\'s got a 4.77:1 diff in his whereas mine\'s a standard 4.11:1 and he\'s got Yokohama A048R tyres on his but I\'m not sure what other mods he has.
Cheers Will. ......I take it your running full interiors not stripped in any way?
Yep. This is the full spec on it!

Good to see another looking at an RX-8 for track use as many dont realise what a good car these are on track,
As Will has already said our cars are not stripped down racers and still have all the creature comforts in place.
I deliberatly run a stock engine and un-mapped stock ECU to show you can get good speed from the RX-8 chassis around the track, not much in the way of times but it would seem quick enough to embarrass quite a few different makes including some pukka race stuff .
Castle Coombe 1.25 and Brands around 59/60 seconds without any clear laps in traffic and conservative driving as you know you have got to drive it home , no times known for Cadwell or Oulton but seems to be up to the job ok.
Spec /
Racing Brake 4 pot calliper conversion with their 2 piece “Race” Drilled and Grooved Discs and braided brake lines with
Racing brake ET 500 pads for road and Hawk DTC 60/DTC 30 for track.
Tein Monflex suspension
Larger Front and Rear Racing Beat anti roll bars and beefier drop links
Poly Bush suspension kit.
R3 4.7 diff
Exedy Single plate Carbon Fibre Clutch assembly
Racing Beat exhaust manifold, silenced 3" de-cat pipe and REV8 3" bore cat-back system.
Magnecor ignition leads fitted with Mazda’s latest uprated coils
Koyo Alloy Radiator
Racing Beat air filter box to go with the Racing Beat air intake scoop already fitted under the nose to get some fresh air in.
Dotz Alpha 8X18 wheels with Eibach 20mm spacers all round Yokohama 245/4018 Sport tires or A048 for Track use
I forgot but I\'ve got the Magnacore leads too! In terms of plans for mine, when finances allow I am going to get a Racing Beat Manifold and probably a Greddy Sump (increased oil capacity, better cooling and doesn\'t rust!) and some new coils. Might change the tyres when they wear out for some Federal RS-R 595s or possibly some Yokohamas if I can find them cheaply.
A stock RX8 will handle quite well around a track also, you dont have to be modified to get some good times. I think i ran a couple of track days before i strated playing with modifications seriously..
Will Dont forget your Strut brace with master cylinder brace lol
Lol, it\'s got a lot of bits on it!

Aston\'s 100% correct, a bone stock RX-8 goes around the tack very very well in terms of overall lap times due to its excellent handling :D
The one thing with the stock RX8 that puts people off is that it rolls quite a bit, if you keep pushing though it\'s actually got lots of grip you just go everywhere at an odd angle!
Thanks guys......I\'ll update later......:Thumbs-up
You say your 7 is to old. Is that for certain championship rules or is it just getting on a bit
Cheers

Don\'t worry Aston\'s got some bars coming, that should stop you getting sea sick when your behind him seeing at his car at lurid angles :rollin
Cheers for letting that cat out the bag Clive lol.
My suspension is not quite as advances as Clive\'s or that of Will66 yet...
Like these?
Like these what Will?
Images of my car before and after fitting coilovers!
yes now i see
Git!!!
Body Roll I don\'t has it! :D

Yes if my LTP happens, have not got the money for the RX7 to become competitive enough for special GT class, so was thinking class D mobile windscreen.....maybe 2014.
Anyway after a 9 hour round trip my new RX8 is parked on the drive having a nice chat with my RX7....
Its a 2003 231 in Titanium. Full black leather.
Its covered 84k but has had a Hurley Rebuild 2k ago :Talking1
TAX til end of MAY 2012!
Mot has just ran out but only 3k since last mot! and 1 advisory.
Got 2 CEL flashing. P0300 misfire ...has new coils and new magnecore leads and plugs according to previous owner . and heater open circuit Bank 1 sensor 1.
.......but it drives spot ON revs all the way to 9k and everything works.......!:burnout and i only paid £2150.00 !!!!!!!!!:D:cool:D:Giggle
( i also got a rebuild receipt for over £2.5k back in 07 2011):rollin:rollin:Giggle
My Plan 2014 Castle Combe mobile windscreen Class D Race series.
Got to get 12 months mot on her and replace the o2 sensor.....and sort the p0300...i can see new leads but unsure on the coils , maybe cat but my mate is very clever so will have some help and i can always ask on here!
Anyways it drives lovely and i cruised down the M6 with zztop Eliminator blaring out the fantastic stereo ( booked in for MOT tomorrow:rolleyes:) and WHAT A BARGAIN ! :3gears-lh:3gears-lh:3gears-rh:burnout
Cant wait to get it on track and see whats what! :guinness time for a cold 1 long day!
I\'d be tempted to check/replace the eccentric shaft position sensor. A mate brought his over to mine with a P0300 code and it died two miles from my house, we resorted to the RAC and the guy spotted the ESPS wasn\'t giving a signal. Still waiting to see if it\'s fixed yet.
Thanks Will for the heads up! ..... I\'d read that somewhere myself. there is a few codes in there I\'m off out for a levels check and code read in a mo...... It got me home 180 miles so more than happy. First job is the 02 sensor replacement only the heater circuit so an easy 1... clear codes and away again but this also may cause the misfire detect.
The previous owner had the light on before the rebuild and i suspect he thought new coils lead and sparks would cure it.....I\'ll be honest i can\'t feel any misfire....anyways even if i have to spend £500 to sort it it\'s still a bargain.
Gonna be hard stripping the inside out its so beautiful in there.
Is there a decent Specialist RX8 breaker out there ?
So much more comfortable than the vx220 ! I can move today!
Levels all good,
codes p0031 H02S bank 1 sensor heater circuit low
P0302 cylinder 2 misfire detect
code P0300 not showing now.
Mot Monday make a list of jobs and go from there......
I dun the 20 brake stomp ECSP clear and the Misfire DTC\'s have gone ! but my frikin drivers door wont open know......so that be the spring broke!
All fun!
A video from my in car camera at last year\'s Japfest. My car is less modded than Will66\'s, but I have Tein Monoflex, RB disks all round, RB front calipers, RB strutbrace, RB catback, and Federal 595RS tyres. My in car camera showed laptimes of 1:32-1.34. Hoping for slightly better this year with RB anti-rollbars and widened track (20mm spacers all round).
Are you planning to track the 8 in the session you\'ve booked at this year\'s Japfest?
Is that Clive zooming passed at about 50 seconds?
It is indeed. I let him past to see if I could at least keep him in sight. As you can see, I couldn\'t! I was lapping 1m32s if track clear, Clive was lapping ~1m25 or better:Thumbs-up
Here\'s my version of the same session, I started off a way back from Malcom I think.
My plan is to take the 7 on track at Japfest this year and the 8 will be a back up...I have 3 others sessions booked that I was planning to take my trusty old Colt GTI round but maybe the 8 if all goes well!
I am up at coombe on the 29 Jan as there is a open day for Interested/ potential racers and Class D is a new class that came in 2011 for stock cars with tight rules limited what you can do, last year Integra type R\'s where choice but take up was limited and your up against 6k engine builds and the like in class b an c ! .....It\'s all about budget .....but i am determined to do it even if i come last and the only 1 in my class....I did think about a clio sport and i had a Integra for a bit but drawn to the 8 !
Ive promised the Wife we will move house first and that is this summer finger crossed !
got to have a pipe dream.....
If it has a good motor then it ought to be fun!
Quote from: Will66;807176If it has a good motor then it ought to be fun!
I hope so ! Just got some bits and pieces ordered.....:3gears-rh
Keep us up to date with pictures as I\'d be interested to see what work is involved in it!
Yep am with Will66 here... a build thread would be awesome
Have to improve my IT skills then !
Thanks guys for all your info.:Thumbsup!...got my door fixed...Mot tomorrow....see what I\'ve bought......!
Then its make a list time Ive been reading up on the formula woman cars which has been great.
I wanna do a track day in it as soon as poss.....
I got a lot to do including getting my race license!
2014 the goal !
:Thumbs-up Great stuff, keep us posted on progress.
Looking at the regulations for class D, if I stripped the interior and fitted a roll cage and extinguisher system to mine I\'d be about ready for Class D, I\'d have to put the cat back on too! I wonder if they apply a correction factor to the engine capacity for the rotary?

Had a quick look and it looks like the RX-8 would be classed as a 2.6 also it would seem they are not taking any more entrys for this year as they have a full grid already.
2014 Clive, Wrote 2 returns post already having laptop issues and keeps crashing will be back.....is the laptop lives!
did any of you guys have problems with noise? i have a toyosports cat back and im thinking of getting a decat but unsure if this will be too loud for track

Several RX-8 trackday guys are running this combination and have never had any problems on trackdays with 105dB static tests or drive-bys. I have a feeling one of them said his ran 99dB, but I stand to be corrected.

Hi Clive 2014 is plan and i\'ve been informed you gotta get in early as grid full!
Class D is production class with tight rules cc does not not matter, only 2 entries last season a pair of stock integra type r\'s, so thats what the 8 would be up against....In all honesty running mid to 2/3 down pack ! as class B has a few turbo\'s forged monsters putting 300+ plus brake down through quaife boxes etc.
I have loads to do race license etc car set up brakes suspension etc this year
I have got to move house then its all guns blazing.
I am on a tight budget so have set my self a realistic time frame.
I\'m off to CC on the 29th as an open day to get some more info.....
car passed MOT straight through no advisory\'s had to change a Lamda thats all! :mmmm
^^ There is a pair of guys on the RX8OC; they post as Conann (Pete) and Kelvin8tor (Kelvin), who are also keen to enter an RX-8 into a race season. They jointly own an RX-8.
Pete already has a racing license and works on a very tight budget. He also lives down your neck of the woods, with CCombe being his home circuit. Might be worth you getting in touch. He was trying to get some others interested after our December trackday at Brands Hatch. Not for me at the moment (who knows in the future - I didn\'t think I\'d ever take my car on trackdays a few years back!).
I don\'t have any contact details, but you can contact him vai the RX8OC PM system.
You\'ll also find some discussion on the RX8OC forum about people discussing putting togther an RX-8 for racing.

thanks buddy! :3gears-rh
RX8s don\'t trouble noise meters unless their exhaust is a 3" tube from the manifold back. Mine registers about 90 db on static tests and has never caught the attention of the noise police on track and it\'s not the quietest system. Because they\'ve got minimal port overlap, all the bang happens in the block and not in the exhaust. The most noise you get from them is transient noises from opening or closing the throttle.
yeah that\'s fair enough. with the cat back its only really loud when at full chat.
thanks for the response!
Yep we normally get laughed at by the noise test guys...
the guys at Brands last year didnt even bother with the meter when i weant to test.
and i am not exactly a quiet 8
Correct me if im wrong but the testers dont take it to the correct rev limit on the rex either when I got tested last time he only had me upto 5k I think which I thought was a bit low but wasnt gonna argue.
This is true however at the kind of throttle opening you need to get up to really high revs when stationary you\'re not going to trouble the noise meters either.
I went to the open day ......and they apply a 1.5 coefficient factor to a rotary so 1950cc equivalent which puts it in class A not class D ! bit miffed at mo. Did not say that in the regs only stated coefficient factor for turbo or supercharged. And also the 1800 cc class D limit is likely to decrease by 2014.
I\'ve given it lots of thought and this car is not gonna be raced, it\'s just wont be competitive enough in Class A. Really wanted it to happen but would not be placed in class D...now looking a class A maybe a Cupra but really gonna see if i can stretch to Mazda 3 MPS poss find an accident damaged car cat C something like that.
Anyway cars on Piston Heads no issues PERIOD rebuilt engine new leads, coils plugs, 12 months mot No advisorys etc.Currently using and loving it as my daily driver. Offered it to my wife but she loves her MR2 roadster.
That\'s a shame :( I was looking forward to seeing you enter a race series and following your progress. Oh well, you can always bring it along to one of our trackdays instead to have some fun :)

If i still have was gonna put round COOMBE on the spring action day but hope it\'s gone by then as looking for an 3 mps. Not bothering with class D especially as there gonna drop the CC to an as yet unknown number in the next few years.
!
Bump this up.
Subject - Brakes. What are they like after some abuse? i currently have stock braking system and looking to upgrade. to start im thinking some braided lines laer upgrade to some hawk ceramic pads.
What do you lot think?
Dan
Hi Dan,
Stock brakes aren\'t bad with a good set of pads, but not the Hawk ceramics as these are not intended for hard/track use as they will fade like made and are just intended as sort of a fast road pad that won\'t produce dust and keep your wheels clean
ohh. thanks for that. what pads would you suggest?
What are you going to use the car for, just road or road and track
Road and tack. but its going to get alot of punishment around track and on the road.
Where Clives Rx8 Race car Project thread? Been searching and cant find????
Clive....
What lap times with those new pads where you doing? and realistically what hypothetical times could a race prepped Rx8 do round combe....I so wanna race a rotor but i cant afford to compete in the special GT series in combe.
1.20 just seems to big a challenge.
Our brief chat has re-ignited my desire to race a Rotor!!! Can i take it to Class A guys in Tin tops?

Will do when i get back from 2-10 shift! ...been meaning to in for a penny an all that......Off to the Darkside ! Lol
I was doing consistently achieving 1m27s around the circuit in my RX-8 with the mods you see listed below. I\'m 100% certain my car could do better but the driver needs bigger balls to carry even higher speeds through the corners ;)
Clive was considerably faster. With failing brakepads he was clocked at 1m25s and he reckons he did 2-3 secs quicker when he changed the pads. Bearing in mind he hasn\'t done much to strip out weight, I could see that 1m20s would be achievable in an RX-8 with just suspension and brake upgrades, plus lightening the car a little. Clive is being encouraged to diet too - we chastised him at a meal after Japfest for not eating his lettuce...:Laugh
There\'s a chap on the RX8OC who is local to Castle Combe, races single seaters there and knows the circuit very well . He bought an RX-8 last year with a view to racing it at CCombe. He has since "upgraded" to the RX8 "PZ" version with improved suspension and this is what he posted up;
"I\'ve recently changed from 231 to PZ. I reckon I could take a standard PZ round Castle Combe in 1m23s dead. Lap record for full blown race saloon is 1m16s and this is the bumpiest circuit in the country."
I have done a quick google and the quickest official time recorded at Combe for a saloon is 1m14.6s in a GT-R.
Cheers Guys for the info....I spectate every race meeting and class A guys are sub 1.20 consistently! .....its all down to the classes and applying a coefficient to a rotary!

I seen the Putts competing in Special GT but they have not showed this year and looks like they may be doing thundersaloons.......He is up against turbo 1300 gsxr Radicals.....i just dont have that budget :(:(:(: Saloons for me (.........:Party:Party:Party:Party:Party:Party unless somebody wants to SPONSOR SPONSOR SPONSOR SPONSOR SPONSOR me :3gears-lh:3gears-lh:3gears-lh:3gears-lh:3gears-lh :god:2Mad:driving:driving:Hammer:evillaugh:InLove
