Hi chaps, Anyone going to this on August 6th-8th? I know its not just for rotarys but im goin.
Also I keep reading that they are going to re-release a 2 seater supercharged RX7??? (something about thay dont want to make a sports/even more performance/less (dare i say it) praticle version of the 8)
gota be dun init

where\'ve you been reading that about new RX7 then outa interest?
Si
Im going there with 3 or 4 others (unfortunately they are not so good and dont have rotarys! - im not biased  ) Stoppin for 3 daze for some reason!
Well........I read it on the internet - it was a typed article out of a magazine. I cant remember where i got it from (just follows link after link after link!) But I first read a hint in max power 3 or 4 months back - just a caption on a lil pic.
Hi Ricco,
I just noticed your sig,the Westie megablade souds interesting.
I am planning to build a pretty radical rotary engine for these type of cars with some serious power and lower engine weight.
What sort of power are you running and what torque?
Kind regards
Carl
Hi Carl,
The car is totally minium to keep the weight down and at full wet weighs 490kg minus driver.
The engine is \'suppost\' to have been from a race bike and is gas flowed/ported. Not sure what loss the power is when it goes through the car but bike engines power is quoted as rear wheel output which should be 127bhp - this one has a straght through exhaust, performance filter etc etc. Not sure of the torque though.
Really good fun but needs tuning! I had toyed with the idea of a rotary engine and heard that there is one kit in existance but its difficult to scilence them enough to pass SVA.
Im sure if you could build one to what you say then it would deffinately be stunning!
Just noticed you do single rotors....how much lighter is that, bhp etc etc......
sounds like an interesting project ... lightweight is either going to mean new housings or less rotors :) ... I think you might be onto somthing there.
Plan is to build a single rotor that is turboed, EFI and revs to around 11,500 rpm.
I reckon that 300 hp will be a reachable target initially and go for around 500 hp later.
All I need is one willing person to want this and I will do it.
Myself and Bill are planning to do it anyway but it would come much sooner with a customer.
Kind regards
Carl
What width rotor would you use Carl? roughly?? :)
I\'d settle for 500hp from 2 or 3 rotors over here atm! I guess there are more cars here now and a lot more engines are being built on these shores than 2 years ago. And a lot more people seeming to be after more power too, so hopefully things will pick up sooner rather than later.
Good luck in the development. Any time scale in mind? I guess the trouble with doing some thing from scratch is it takes up time that you would otherwise be paying the bills with :( Vicous circle, especially here atm.
Oh my god - 300bhp from 1 rotor!! Sorry to go back to kit cars but If you put one in there and showed it off I think you would get sooooo much attention - even if it only output 200 bhp!
what kind of dimensions and cost per unit or is it not possable to say at the moment?
Just found where I read about the new RX7 - on this forum!!!

Looks like Mazda are not going the way of turbos to produce higher power, they are going for the supercharger.
All to do with emissions, but the yanks do have some uses...
They have always favoured the super over the turbo!
Dan
Also, popped down to my local Mazda people today. All very nice and helpfull. Couldnt believe the reaction I got from the staff. They just loved and appreaciated the FD just such a good feeling! I asked them there about the rhumored re-release of the 7 and they could only confirm that THEY ARE CONSIDERING A RE-RELEASE but not deffinate and deffinatly no spec (Supercharger/turbo/3 rotor etc)!
I,m not sure as to cost yet as it would include all of the ancillaries too and fabrication of the manifolds.
Suffice it to say that 200hp would be pretty easy.
300 should be fairly easy.
Like your bike engine though it would have less torque than a 2 rotor or 4 pot car engine, but since the kit car would be pretty light it would run very well.
Kind regards
Carl
The main challenges for me are:
1. accepting taking the westy off the road before I have it back on properly
2. If not 1. persuading the wife to let me buy a Fury as a test mule (looking slim at the moment)
3. Finding a suitable gearbox to take 12,000 RPM or more (have a line on an S2000 box)
4. Finding a suitable diff.
5. Getting my finger out and writing some code to control the whole schmeer. No point doing something like this unless you are doing it \'right\'.
The diff is so far proving to be a bit of a challenge. You really need something in the 5.4:1-6:1 range to really allow this engine to fly. These ratios are available, but mostly either in billet unobtainium or in 9" diffs that weigh more than the engine. The finished result will be very trick as I will be able to incorporate all of my ideas on turbo\'d engine control. Rest assured it will not have an air:air intercooler.
Where it gets most exiting is that I should be able to program it up so that there is the same torque at the wheels in most of the gears by adjusting boost. So I effectively I can remain traction limited in each gear whilst avoiding the excessive wheelspin that you can often get with a turbo in a 1/2-3/4 ton car. Now a car that pulls as hard in 5th as it does in 2nd would be devastatingly fast.
