Title: hx50 holset turbo advice
Post by: playtime on January 12, 2012, 12:16:41 AM
Hi lads. Quick question. Been offered one of these, brand new, worth the money, and not sure if shes overkill, when Im only looking around 360-380hp, and running front mount ic, and apexi ecu. Engine had rebuild, but completely std ports. Anyone any experience with this model of holset? Not sure if this would suit the fd, and not make her a laggy monster. Any advice gratefully accepted. :cheers

A few people do use these turbos but there\'s not a lot of information around about them. They don\'t even release the compressor maps for them. My friend works in the R&D at holders and he can\'t even get much info on them.

Do you know the sizes of the inducer and exducer? The flange foot print on the exhaust side of the turbo? Is it a T3 T4 T6? What size A/R does it have?

The answers to these questions can make it easier for someone to tell you if it will work on your engine.

Have you upgraded your fuel system? As you might find you max it out prety quickly with a single turbo. Depending on how much boost you run that is.

Hx50 is pretty big for those power goals!

A smaller turbo would be better for your spec IMO. There are some vids on youtube with this tub on a ported FD.

Oops sorry lads, forgot to add the following info :
Fully-floating twin hydrodynamic journal bearings.
Fully adjustable compressor and turbine housing orientation.
T4 exhaust flange.
exhaust for 3inch downpipe
exhaust housing size is 22
airflow- .75 kg/s
Length (mm)249
Width (mm)275
Height (mm)225,
ass no; 3591768
model; Hx50

For info, shes a t4 divided flange model, which would suit my similiar stainless manifold, and Ive got a new 255 uprated fuel pump and will be running an apexi ecu, if that helps anyone giving me any advice. By the way this new turbo is only £200, hence why I thought it was worth a sniff. Cheers for all information already given. :)

Can I have it if you don\'t :D

Honestly I do think it\'s big for youand not just cos I want it! I am a big fan of Holsets.

If those are your power goals a HX40 would be much more suited and a lot more useable. Even a HX35 would get you close and spool like a mofo!

sweet. I think bullseye in the US might do smaller a v band hotside which will help with spool.

sorry for being thick, but not sure what you mean stylus. I knew I was looking a turbo with a divided t4 flange as my stainless manifold has this, and I didnt want a t3 flange turbo and a converter between the 2 slowing down airflow between the engine and turbo.

Let\'s start off with what you have on there now and see where we are at - what markings are on the hotside?  -

Sorry I missed it in the spec you posted! 22cm housing is I think about 1.15 ar! That\'s going to be laggy as I have said. Not sure if bullseye do bolt on housings for the 50. google their website as I am on my phone right now and see if they do a smaller hotside for it but still on a t4.

Think of it as a GT42 and you won\'t go far wrong.
