Title: perfect offset/width ?
Post by: rising son on January 10, 2012, 08:53:39 AM
im ditching all the plans i had, mostly due to my wheels being too wide amoungst other things , would need arches and i aint cutting up my wings as they are too good.. anyway, what would be an ideal width and offset for an FC ?? i dont want the wheels buried in the arches or hanging right out... cheers in advance.

I run 17x8JJ rims with ET35 offset (I think stock is closer to 40) all round on my FC vert and they are an excellent fit, don\'t mess up the handling and fill the arches nicely. I use 225/45 rubber on there - as that fits nicely on the 8 inch rim - no strechty / no baloon and gives very little error on the speedo.

You could go wider on the back, but then lose the ability to swap wheels front to back.  I know people have fitted 9" rims and even 10\'s on the FC.

not sure on perfect, but you\'ll need staggered fitment. The rear requires more offset/width to line up with the front

was thinking id need staggered... but if i find something i like non staggered ill put hubcentrics on the rear, another question is... between what offsets are good? like what offset is too small and wont fit the hub or scrub against something and whats too big?... whats a no no ... hate looking for wheels :(

I don\'t fully understand this rim business, check this out though.

That should help.

right... that guide says max offset on a front 7j rim is 40.... ive seen ones 7j with 45 offset.. what does this actually mean? does that mean they will rub on the inside parts or stick out to far??? a really dont get this offset stuff

Drop in the specs here and you will see how far much neerer or further away they are from stock

http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

I am running FD rims on mine, needed a 20mm spacer on the front to clear the suspension

right m1tch... so if i were for talkin sake running 35 offset now... and put on 45 offset... the wheel would sit further INSIDE the arch by 1omm? or stick out 10mm more ? thats what i cant figure out

Stock 16" rims where 7" wide with an offset of +45.  All 4 corners where the same.

Difference betwene a 7j +40 & a 7j +45 is that the wheel with the + 40 will sit 5mm further out than the +45.  Both are 7" width and only difference is the offset.

7J Et45 will look rubbish. I\'m running 7j Et35 on the front and need 50mm spacer at least.
I previously had 8j et25 fr and 9j et27 rear which was nice and flush i\'d say. I still wanted to put a 25mm spacer on the rear though :D

The lower the offset figure, the further the wheels stick out/toward the arch. You have to take width and offset into consideration together when figuring out where the wheel will sit. So the Et45 will sit 10mm further in than the Et35, assuming the both wheels are the same width.

m1tch just found a set of FD wheels, u say u needed 20mm front spacers... how do the rears sit?

The fronts are exactly inline with the edge of the front wings (maybe slightly over but that might be due to the tyres), the rears are no issue, I have no spacer fitted to the rear and they are quite some way inside the arch, would probably need a 15-20mm spacer to bring it out level.

We should sticky this thread to help people learn about offsets, because frankly I don\'t understand them either, if we have 1 thread for people\'s questions on offsets it will keep our lovely FC club tidy.

On that note, where do I stand with wheels that are et0?
Title: perfect offset/width ?
Post by: dthebuk on January 11, 2012, 08:55:48 AM
the M is where the wheel bolts to the hub, the offset is the distance between the hub and the centre line of the wheel. Therefore with et 0 the hubface of the wheel sits on the centreline

generally when it comes to wheels, your best bet is to just crack out a ruler

Things that you need to take into account when chosing wheel / tyre combinations:

I would also look at R32 GTR rims, the image link doesn\'t work where I saw them on RX7club anymore, I think I posted it up in good looking FC thread though, they seem to be spot on for offsets etc and what I would have got if I haddn\'t been offered my Efini rims.

I second the r32 rims looking good, if you google it you can find some pics. I\'d have them too but I want some dish on mine so have turned my attention elsewhere.

Thanks mate, the R32 rims do look really good, I chose the FD rims as they are an inch wider than FC rims, and are the same rolling circumference, plus there are plenty of grip for some high power drag FDs :)

should be fine. I ran 8 and 9 J advans on mine which were similar offset to those that you have mentioned, i think they were slightly lower. Dont have a pic  of the fronts, but rears used to look like this.

can some1 look at these... something is confussing me... look at the 2nd pic seams to be a part on the back of the wheel that would sit against the hud... instead of the part with the studs sitting flush... is it just me or do you see what am seein???
Title: perfect offset/width ?
Post by: B.Martin on January 17, 2012, 07:02:46 AM
Yes I think the studs sit into the wheel on these and not flush, quite a few rims have that kind of design but you wouldn\'t notice it mate.
Title: perfect offset/width ?
Post by: rising son on January 17, 2012, 09:49:29 PM
yea i know i wouldent notice it... donno if its just my car or all fc\'s but the studs seem really short in comparrison to other cars... no matter what wheels i fit im only getting the bolts on half way.... hence if these wheels dont sit with the stud hole flush i doubht they wud be suitable... what u think?
Title: perfect offset/width ?
Post by: rising son on January 17, 2012, 11:40:17 PM
martin, boy sent me a pic and the studs do sit flush.... certainly didnt look it from the first pics but yea they do... just hope the fc studs are long enough.
