Emissions.

It pumps air (no, seriously!) into the cat to assist it in burning off all the nasties in your exhaust gas.

Adding weight, complication, power drain from an extra pulley, noise, unnecessary pipework and wiring :(

out of interest would the cat be totally stuffed if you removed air pump then from emission point of view etc? Just thinking if for sake of MOT it was necessary to stick old cat back on whether it\'d be OK if in mean time you\'ve removed said pump?

It is an essential part of the emissions process,  but can be removed if you want best have a look here

This is by far and away the most usfull place for anything RX related.  The threads are a bit old but the pages can be saved to a local drive easily.

Theres also a 93 Shop manual in PDF format

I found it very usfull when looking for an FD RX Have a look and see what you think.  :rollin

Lots of people...

From memory this is a basic guide to airpump disconnection/removal...

Simple disconnection will lead to a blocked/overheating cat.

If you want to remove your airpump, then you will have to

Get rid of your cat and replace with a midpipe
Get an Apexi PFC and get it mapped.

You can go one step further and get a pulley kit then you can remove the pump altogether.

Removal without the installation of a PFC will/can lead to erratic idling.
