Title: hesitation problem
Post by: fd3spete on July 01, 2004, 09:37:14 AM
can anybody help me with my hesitation problem. i know it could be caused by dozens of factors, but was wondering if there is any common problem or anything which i should maybe look at first.

basically, it hesitates from idle up to around 5000 rpm, then not so badly the rest of the way up. sometimes it does it quite badly, sometimes it wont do it at all. at first it did seem to be related to when i put fuel in, but not anymore. i always run it on optimax, and ive just changed the plugs in it.

it sometimes idles erratically too, dropping from normal speed to around 100rpm, then back up over and over again, sometimes even stalling. most of the time it idles fine, but occasionally does this.

hope some of you guys can help, but i know its a long shot with a problem such as this.

the car is always run on optimax. i did try ultimate unleaded once and the problem was much worse.

ive just bought the car, and as far as i know the engine is totally standard. it has a turbo timer wiring harness in it so it has obviously had one of them fitted before, so im not 100% sure it is totally standard, but it appears to be. the only mod i have made is to de-restrict it, but the problem occured before i did this.

it still does perform quite well, it is evenly matched with a mates mr2 turbo running 270bhp, and top end i leave it, so it cant be causing a huge problem, but obviously it definitely wants sorting out.

checked your fuel filter could be restricting flow?

Hi Pete,

I had a similar problem on mine even after having changed engine oil, plugs & all filters, but mine is an auto, so I don\'t know if my remedy will work for you.  Turned out to be the gearbox oil being v low.  Once that was changed the car drove completely differently - no stalling, spluttering falling revs etc.  Don\'t know if the same solution would help if you drive a manal, but might be worth checking gearbox, diff etc to see if all fluid levels are ok.

when ya checking ya plugs, don\'t forget to check the HT leads as they could cause that kinda thing too :)
