Hey all,
first post here but a fair few questions to ask. I managed to get my hands on a fc in the end of September which was quite a find. Its n/a 13b I think with 43k on the clock one owner from knew. I have been wondering which way to go with the engine, as in boost or a charger. Tho now i feel like being a bit different and go for carbs, I have heard insane ideas of using bike carbs ?. Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge on this, or if somebody can point me in the right direction as I have found nothing online as far as research goes.
Cheers !!
The stock EFI system on the FC will give you more power then carbs hence why you wont find any/little information on people doing it.
Hi Kyle,
Over the course of my ownership of my 2 EGIs I have spent ages looking into various power options with a views that if I ever have some money I might be able to upgrade my car (this still hasn\'t happened yet unfortunately).
Anyway I have looked down the supercharger route and this was looking expensive unless you happen to be a decent mechanic who can do this sort of thing yourself. So far as I could tell there are no kits available for the 13b with the exception of a Paxton (IIRC) sold in the states which by all accounts seems to suck power from your car or give you very minimal gains).
As for carbing I also looked at this and if you search for threads started by me you should find one about this which Rotorheid talks a lot in (he uses an EGI with a Weber 48 or 51 IDA on for hill climbs). I do believe you can make gains with one of these on.
I still have my 2 cars and at the minute I am pulling the engine from one of them for possible future use.
Again if I ever get spare money I would ideally like to rebuild this engine, port it in the process with either a Bridge or Peripheral Port and in a perfect world would like to go the route of ITB\'s for that extra power and awesome sound.
You can find loads of info on Ausrotary and RX7club for this sort of thing.
I did happen to search on application of bikecarbs on the 13b just a few days ago and unless you know a tried and tested carb with regards to jetting etc then you could spend a hell of a lot of time trying to set the damn things up on the 13b (from what I have read and from no experience of my own). If you are going to carb then use the Weber or Dellorto 48. Both have a lot of info out there with regards to jetting etc, as well as suitable manifolds which can be bought of the shelf.
Oh one thing to think about with whatever you do is to think about what you want to use the car for? I really enjoy tracking mine and have also done some grass autotests. If I want to continue to track the car a PP would most likely stop me from going to a lot of tracks as the noise from the car would be too much.
Good luck anyway.
Mark
Cheers Mark,
I am just looking for a way to add a bit of performance but to be slightly different. All my friends have turbos and chargers, I thought this was a cool was to increase performance but to have a "old school" feel about the fc. Its just the enjoyment factor and the appeal of being different from my friends which makes me think carbs. I had a boosted civic a few yrs back and really do not fancy going turbo again. I have a friend from norway who seems to think that the right carb setup can out perform a standard turbo 2 model. Which started in interest in this sort of direction. Will have to check out your posts and I will keep you updated on what I find/ how I get on.
cheers buddy !!
Check out the \'old school motors and parts\' there are some 13b carbs that come up that fitted on the 13bs that went into the 1st gens, you can also get 13B carb manifolds mainly for the Weber DCOE40s, a carbed engine won\'t outperform a standard turbo II unless its heavily ported - ie peripheral ported, if the engine is carbed and PPed then yes it would outperform the heavily restricted stock turbo II, until they increase the boost by 0.3bar and the power levels are he same lol
If you are thinking of tracking the car then NA is a good option as you would have no lag, don\'t forget that you will have high compression rotors in there, so keeping NA would be the cheaper option!
P.S. welcome to the club :D
Actually a stock engine block FC non turbo will run more power on a carb than its stock injection.
180hp can be acheived flywheel on a side draught 48 Dellorto carb that sits on top of the engine, this has to be coupled with headers and free flow exhaust but it does make a big difference over injection.
The stock car runs 148 flywheel hp with its stock injection and the later hi compression egi\'s from 89 on run 165hp.
Hope that helps.
Regards
Carl
Some carbs for sale on the Irishrotory site
Spot on Carl. I looked at that combo a while back. I know of a rx3 sedan running that set up and it flys.
Thanks for all the info and such a warm welcome. As i am just throwing ideas up in the air what do you all think about a v8 from a lexus soarer or is400 ?. There are two reasons im put off. One being I would like to keep the rotary if I could, my 13b has only 43k on the clock. The car itself is such a clean example. Cleanest arches I have ever seen on a jap car and has only been in the rain twice in its life (once was when I owned it). The second reason would be custom mounts, custom prop shaft and probably many more parts I havent thought of yet. There is no time limit set on this or cost budget if I chose this route as I live by myself so the money would just come out of my drinking kitty which has been quite large for some time now !!
Your second reason nails it really. Plus insurance hassles etc. I personally would stick with the 13b and get as much info and help from this site.

I have also been advised on throttle bodies, has anyone had any experience with this ?
I think your right Bryan, v8 would be great but completion I would be looking at around 2 yrs without cutting corners. That doesnt bother me, however I do not want to bite off more than I can chew

Hi Kyle,
Again no experience but have a look on Ausrotary for tweakit ITBs.
I have seen a few threads with people using them over there.
Heres a link to the tweakit site where they have a lot of rotary stuff

Thanks mark, There is some great info there !!. A Friend has informed me that in the u.s they already make brackets to fit a v8. As im willing to plow 3k ish into this I am really not sure which way to go now !
stick with the 13b, V8\'s go against the entire ethos of the RX7, lightweight, nimble and high revving. stick the carbs on there, port the engine a bit, stick some good brakes/suspension etc on and you\'ll be laughing.
Although, if you do decide on the V8 route... I\'ll take the engine off your hands :D
No problem. Whilst I want to have a V8 powered car one day im with Skifle on this and say that I would stick with the rotary.
Like I said if I had the money I would port, ITB etc.
Handling can also be dramatically improved on these cars so you could also consider this.
I have the Racing Beat anti roll bars and drop links on my car and these make a massive difference. Some Hawk pads, DOT 5.1 fluid and braided lines also improved the brakes a lot. Also at the time added Brembo plain discs that were only £60 for the front and these have worked well on and off the track.
But at the end of the day do whatever floats your boat :)
Thanks
Mark
Thank you for all the advice guys, I do appreciate it. As I have the time and the money available I am going to go v8 on this. I know its against the advice given, but if I dont I will always look back and think what could have been. Thinking about what skifle says about the eithos of the rx7 I do agree, but I just feel this is the right choice for me. Tho I might be able to sweeten him when my 13b goes up for grabs. Think I will have to become a full member and start a build thread up and sell the bits I dont need :)

Just paid my dues to become a full member, thou I cannot work out how to pm you regarding the details of my 13b
Whilst i in no way approve of your decision to tear up and FC and stuff the engine bay with a V8, if you do decide to ruin the car with a V8 at least use a LS V8 and not a toyota lump.

Not a toyota lump but a lexus. Thou I will have to use a toyota box as the v8 lexus comes in auto only over here :(
Lexus = Toyota ;)
Would some form of bike carb conversion work ??

oh dear ! my lack of knowledge is evident !!
on a different note. Is raccoon city out in your country ? im a massive resi fan and gagging to play it
Quote from: the hat;804876Would some form of bike carb conversion work ??
apparently so, however I have found little or no info on this
Try giving bogg brothers a call there 4cylinder conversions usually cost around 800 fitted and setup if I get an egi I plan trying bike carbs but I have no idea if they will work ok

top right, above where you log out, should be a blue bar saying private messages, copy the name you want to PM, paste the name in the recipient box and type your message.

I really want to upload a pic to show u guys how clean the engine and whole car is
You can do that with photobucket mate, you really shouldn\'t get rid of that 13B. Whats the car going to be for, how about finding a renesis engine for it?

Its just a project car, I dont aim at a particular use. The main aim is to have fun doing the conversion, I have the brecon beacons on my doorset and I love going for an afternoon/ late night drive up there. Its not going to be used daily or in the rain. Just be fun to go for a spin with the sound of a v8.
Not that I like the look of this one but the sound is amazing, if you would like the 13b i am open to offers :)

I have a 13b turbo mate, so it\'s of little use to me. I\'m sure one of us FC vultures will have it though don\'t worry.
This is how a rotary sounds like Vs V8

off topic but I dont want to start a new thread for this, do you guys know which model walbro fuel pump is best for the fc ?
the vid is very cool by the way, but the sound of the v8 is so good !!

You sure? Look like FBs, especially from the back, plus it was a 12a engine

FCs dude lol look at the side and rear
there you go FC maybe you should go to specsavers LOL
Hmm, wonder why they had a 12a in there then
lighter higher reving and slightly smaller ideal for track from what I can see, you can produce big power out of a 12a turbo still

This really depends on what kind of mods and stuff you will be running, of your changing the engine then what pump is good For an RX-7 is pretty irrelevant :Giggle

yes I reolised this after posting ! think ill have to join a lexus forum see what they are doing with these engines :)
Don\'t do it mate, if you want a V8 get a Soarer. If you wan\'t a rotary, buy an Rx-7 ;)
