Title: car won\'t idle after choke pops off
Post by: hlsteve on December 18, 2011, 07:16:58 PM
I have a stock 1983 RX-7 that sat for several years. Years back I put a Hayes rotary rebuild in it and it only has a few thousand miles on that engine.  When I parked it the car was running fine.  I finally fired it up and it ran fine again.  I drove it to work and after about 10 miles it started spitting huge sparks out the back and the exhaust overheat light came on.  I pulled over and the entire exhaust was glowing like the evening sun.  I towed it home and discovered I had melted my aftermarket Bonez cat.  After some diagnosis I determined one of the sparkplugs had snapped off and when that happened, I am guessing I was shooting unburned fuel into the cat where it ignited and melted the cat.

I replaced the muffler (which had been filled with the debris from the cat) and since I no longer have to pass emissions I installed a straight pipe.  I also tried removing my ACV and replacing it with a plate.

The problem now is that the car will start with the choke on, but the minute the choke snaps off, the car dies.  At that point it can not be restarted until it cools down.  At which point if I put the choke on it will start and then die when the choke snaps off.   I tried putting the ACV back on the car but that does not seem to make a difference.  For the life of me I can not guess what is going on and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

I apologize if I have posted this in the wrong part of the forum.  If so, let me know and I will move my post.  I have looked for similar posts but can\'t find one.

Its not something to do with the carb is it ? You could be running lean without the choke and ok with it on. Does your pump run ok ? Could your filter be on its last legs ?

Not sure if the FB has a fuel pressure regulator !

Have you looked on Rx7club.com for help. There is a much larger FB section ! Although people here are more than happy to suggest stuff to try :D

? Main jets gummed up through standing?

?Did the cat have a lambda (oxygen) sensor system like more modern cars?

Does sound like carb related, worth cleaning with some carb cleaner?

red hot would tend to lead one to beleive there is a lean condition ... while engine is choked it is running ok once choke is off is going lean ... so fuel flow restriction may be in play such as a plugged fuel filter ... or the carb needs to be freshened out due to fuel gumming up while car sat in storage
