Title: Holset\'s any good?
Post by: FD3S Efini on December 15, 2011, 10:07:43 PM
Been searching on the web after turbo information  for a single turbo that i will eventually convert to and i have come across the  Holset HX50 and wondered if it would be suitable for a bridgeported  motor?

Also found the Holset H2E aswell which is the older version of the  turbo above,

seen on Rx7club.com people using them and having good  results so am asking if anyone here has used a one or have any information on  them or opinions,

http://www.holset.co.uk/partsservice...Data_Sheet.pdf (http://www.holset.co.uk/partsservice/service/HX_Service_Data_Sheet.pdf)

Hopefulley  that link may be of use

Also spotted this aswell:

All  input is appreciated

Cheers

There is also this Holset HX60 which would be crazy power for not much money, if I didn\'t have a TA45 then I would probably think about a Holset, they seem pretty cheap for what you get and there are many rebuild kits.

THey can get BIG:

This is a HX60 (like in the ebay ad) making 900bhp on a 20B:

i was looking into old holset but worried about exhaust temps on rotaries.
might melt the metal as most holsets were for diesel vehicles not running much rpm.

newer holsets, from my research, seems better able to manage with the heat from rotaries.

other than that im not much help lol

if you want to try new things then turbodynamics do a gt35 for perkin tracktor but no specs on that that i can find.

Think that\'s backwards. Newer variable vein ones are more prone to not like very hi hheat. Don\'t forget they are over engineered to take a constant 40Psi for 300k miles or something. Lorries are rarely off boost even when cruising.

Martin over at speedline imports is running my spare Garrett turbo off a Volvo diesel truck, doesn\'t seem to have an issue, perhaps also try some Borg Warner turbos as those are popular as well.

another question on top of the first is what sort of borgwarner model is about the same size,

Im new with these big truck turbos so be gentle lol

Hi Mate.. I ran an H1E on my old FD3.. That is the older version of the H1E was only running 1 bar on it making about 420bhp with no problems in the time I had it. Loads of guys in the states have done it.. That\'s what prompted me! HX40 would be better as the blade design is better. Have one of the on my current RB30/26 build. The hot side is a little bit big but I got stuck with what was available at the time. Still doesn\'t spool too badly. Improved spool etc.
Depends what your power goal is.. Big ports I would imagine an HX50 would be okay. Sizing the exhaust it the main thing. Tricky one.. I might be empted to say stick with an HX40 but I not had any experience with ported engines to know how much they effect spool?
As for compressor racing I believe they are made form Holset copy parts. Not genuine Holset.. That is not to say they are no good.. If they sourced good bits to start with they will be fine. I have one of there 60mm waste-gates and that\'s pretty nice! I even took it apart and checked it out before I used it.
If you are serious about going Holset please have a look on my website //www.rspowerprojects.co.uk you might get a bit more info there and you can always drop me an e-mail from there.. Slim chance I might be able to help you sourcing one.
All the best
Lee
