got the Cosmo in at WGT to get the motor rebuilt, spoke to Pip yesterday and it has broken the rotor tip on the rear rotor, no damage to the rotor but the housing is damaged.
just shows you I only drove it home 3 miles when it happened but still took the housing.
thankfully no other damage and Pip has sourced another rear housing for me which is being shipped.
I am going to see Pip next week to have a quick chat and collect the manifold and hard pipes so I can get them polished, I suggested to Pip about going the stand alone ECU route such as MOTEC (as reccomended by Mir) bad news because of the complications of the electronic auto box it seems a really difficult or impossible to get the stand alone to speak to the box so it looks like it will have to be a piggyback unit.
Pip is going to give it some thought, the one that springs to mind in the e-manage ultimate, has anybody else got any suggestions, I know it is not a problem for the RX7 boys with the manual box but unless I go the manual gearbox route which is a big investment which I dont really want to do at the moment, and I do like the auto box I must admit.
But if the box was ever to go I would probably look at that option then but all being well not for a few years yet.
I am also looking at a bigger intercooler but not much out there for the Cosmo, I saw I guy in Aus put a RX7 v-mount set up on his cosmo but mounted it in the same position as the original front mounted and looked really good and didnt have to remove the front bumper as there was loads of room to work.
so suggestions please
ECU suggestions?
Intercooler suggestions?
Thanks
Hi mate
It\'s a shame that Motec is not up to the job! I am running out of options now :(. What Pip is thinking of doing to your 20b ecu wise? One piece of advise, tell him to check all the wiring for you! He is good at locating faults and addressing them accordingly!!
I will be ringing Pip soon as my car is going there soon. So, I may catch up with you there
Mir
Hi Mir,
what are you going in to get done this time?
I think Pip is looking at a piggyback so all the tuning, fuel / air mixture boost levels etc can be done to the motor but the piggback withh still allow the main ECU to talk to the gearbox.
There is another option I can send the ECU away and have it chipped by a firm in Japan called Do=Engineering who took over the Re-Ameniya set up that they used to do for the Cosmo years ago which lifted the speed limiter fuel cut and increase the boost levels, you have to tell them what mods have been done and they chip it to suit, however any changes thereafter it has to go away again the theory is a plug in and go method but this costs well over £1k, I think a piggback is a better option as you can re-map it again with new mods
Frank, pop Kevin (kev-yorks) a PM as he has now years of experience with his 3 Rotor Cosmo and found that the GT42/ 45 works great on these cars along with from memory a Haltech set up that he installed and tuned himself
Hope this helps
Hi Frank
I recently developed a problem with a car, nothing serious but still needs Pips attention. Thereafter, I have to install a 60mm tial wastegate and final re-map to 1.5 bar.
Now the option you have looks very attractive, but I don\'t agree with sending things back to Japan in order to re chip them for more modes :(
The only option which comes to my mind is to go manual Fd/RX8 gearbox. But, you prefer Auto gearbox so that is out of the question here.
I really wish Motec would have done the trick for you :(. As far as I know, Pip has good links with Motec UK and my car is actually wired in collaboration with their advise. Actually, Motec has visited Pips garage serveral times.
So, I am sure they (Motec) will be able to help! It\'s beyond me as to why Motec is not designed for Automatic Cosmo Engine :(

Mir, I am glad you still have the 20b, I am with you on the ECU back and forth to Japan, also £1k each time,, definately not a good idea, Not that I am against Manual boxes but it would cost well over 2k to sort it to manual I would rather spend that on other things for now and may end up going that route if the auto box ever goes wrong
you never know with Pip he may well come up with something yet, I was hoping to get it up to 450+bhp but maybe not now, however with a piggyback and a bigger intercooler and the street port I would think 400+ should be achievable, will wait and see what Pip says

Kev ran a manual FD box after having a bit of fun on the motorway with the auto box.

Shauan don\'t leave it there what happened?
and was that after or before he went with PP and the haltech ecu?
Let\'s just say he hasn\'t quite cracked 200 yet!! Private test track of course though
Quote from: frank20bcosmo;801081Shauan don\'t leave it there what happened?

Its a long time ago but it swapped ends on the motorway in the wet. The gearbox dropped down gears with a bit of throttle and spun the car out.
Don\'t know if kev was running an aftermarket ecu at the time though.
Shaun
Well and truely before the beast really got going ! Hopefully kev will be along at some point to fill in the detail, he only told me in passing why he had swapped to a manual box. If I remember at the 1st North vs South Dyno day about 6yrs ago !
Shaun
I had a similar experience in the wet on the way to Rotorstock 2 years ago, didnt drop down unexpected but went to overtake another car foot down dropped a gear and went vitually sideways threw me out of the seat dont know how I saved it but I did :driving
I blamed the tyres, so any other trip out in the wet kept boost to a minimum just in case:eek:
Are you keeping it on the twins? As when Kev put a single on standard ports he made 476hp at the hubs. ;) he used a GT4094
staying on the twins, I would have to go manual box I think if I go single turbo,
I would just be happy with 400+bhp at the motor and driveable on the street, a bit of a sleeper if you know what I mean
if the auto box ever goes then I would go single turbo and manual box at the same time
Do you have to change the rear plate to go to an FD manual box?
not sure, I haven\'t looked in to it to be honest
not even thinking about that yet
one day Grant maybe ,,one day
I\'m sure it will be great to drive on the auto box anyway. I bet many people ask you what car it is and then when you smoke people at the lights they\'re shocked
I think the best one I can recall,
I was travelling towards home cruising at 60 when this car, I cant remember what it was nothing flashy came up behind me at speed as I saw him coming I just booted it away up to triple digits and just backed off again,,as I resumed cruising to 60 he came up behind me as I looked in the mirror I saw him with his face up to his windscreen trying to read the Cosmo badge on the back
I bet he was on google that night reading all about the Cosmo and what was under the bonnet that just smoked away from him,,:flamed I was just chuckling to myself,, but yeah you are right not may people know what it is,, I am educating them slowly
I would have a Cosmo any day. Carl has one, might convince him to rent it too me for a while.
Just picked upon this thread after a enforced absence.
The auto box is the weak link in the system and If staying with it I\'d recommend a good flush of the auto systems and especially important the gear box oil cooler...........heat kills these boxes and I\'d gone through two before going manual.
If fitting a piggyback the it\'s down to PIP and what he\'s happy fitting and tuning tbh any will do the job. But watch that back end afterwards two much right foot as the power coupled with the 20b torque goes up she\'ll kick down and everything becomes lively as you\'ve found out.
The stock turbo\'s are restrictive but the first thing to do is the down pipe it\'s additional got CAT\'s in there for the sole purpose of choking everything and reducing the power so I\'d budget for these replacing if going piggyback ECU.
TBH the car crys out for the manual gearbox, its transformed with a FD box behind the 20b but thats your call. Let me know if you want talking through whats involved in the conversion.
Out of all the various stages of development the most streetable car I had was with a gt42 journal bearing turbo. Dyno sheet attatched we only ran it on low revs and 0.9bar, stock 20b porting and exhaust sleeves in place, boost was instantanious and just kept going, the FD box will take this all day without issues but the stock Auto won\'t last long at this.
Hi Kev, thanks for the reply,
I was going to ask Pip to do a transmission flush and change the filter,
however regarding the downpipe I have knocked out the pre-cat in the downpipe to derestrict it but somebody has suggested removing the exhaust sleeves from the block as these also restrict the gases, I have had a custom made s/s exhaust system with just 2 very slim back boxes and no mid system silencer,
can you buy a good quality down pipe from the turbo manifold to fit the cosmo or would I have to get one custom made?
I would also be really interested in seeing what is involved in a manual gearbox conversion if you can enlighten me. and what intercooler have you fitted to your cosmo as I am sure you do not have the standard unit still fitted?
thanks
Frank
You can get aftermarket Auto transmission ECU\'s, so you could go down the route of staying auto (and getting a programmable AT ECU) and have your choice of standalone ECU\'s for the engie.
I run the Emanage Ultimate, and it will give you quite a bit of tuning potential, but it does have some limitations - all depends on your power goals I suppose.
AS i think an auto box sucks in any sporty car.. I would \'simply convert to manual and go stand alone.
Supra gearbox or T56 comes to mind...
If Pip can fit a supra gearbox for you than I can guarantee that you would have a bullet proof gearbox. Supra\'s gearboxes are capable of up to 1600 RWHP.
However, I do know that Pip has fitted many T56 magnums, so he might suggest that for you.
Frank, I learnt one majore principle of life and that is, if you doing something, do it once and do it right. In my honest opinion, it just does not make sense that you know in your head that something needs to be done and you leave it for the other day.
The sooner the better. Mate, go manual and get it over and done with.
Take my example, I rebuild the engine, then send the car away for ECU, now I have to send it for the wastegate and mapping. On the other hand, all these jobs could have been concluded on the very first visit the car made to WGT, and I could have saved arround a 1000 pounds in RECOVERIES :(
I hope the above make sense
Mir
Thanks Guys
I will have a chat with Pip when I go over this week and put some costings together.
Frank down pipe is a custom job but a very easy one to fabricate.
Intercooler depends what you want and how much modification your up for the standard cooler is ok\'ish or theres the ones Dave Morris in Aus had made up that fit all the standard mounts but flow better than stock. Final option is a custom job of your own design.
The gear box manual conversion is straight forward and the fd box bolts straight onto the back of the 20b without too much work the main bits required are a FD box and clutch (must be with a lightened flywheel to bolt onto the counter weight), clutch pedal assembly & master cylinder (I used one from a Mazda 626), the front section of your prop needs mating with a fd output shaft (straight forward job for a propshaft place and not expensive) a bit of heavy guage plate and rubber suspension buffers then for a new gearbox brace. The hardest job tbh is working under the dash to get the pedal kit inplace. I\'d need to go back over my notes though to talk you through the mod 100%, but it\'s certainly no biggie for the likes of PIP or a good diy\'er could do the conversion in a weekend with the access to the tools required.
Thanks Kev,
I spoke to Dave Morris about the intercooler a while back but he had to get a minimum batch made to get the manufacturer interested in doing them and apparently all were sold with no others in the pipeline, shame really.
however another Cosmo owner in AUS fitted a V-Mount from an RX7 but mounted it in the same place as the original Cosmo intercooler with the aid of a couple of 45 degree bends and did not even have to remove the front bumper, another conversation with Pip me thinks
Did I read that dyno that Kev posted correctly? 1184 lb ft of torque?
Quote from: Will66;801407Did I read that dyno that Kev posted correctly? 1184 lb ft of torque?
It does, surely that wrong? it is still climbing too, along with the HP
gotta be before it\'s DIN corrected, or poss even fly... surely not, 600 odd foot pounds of torque at 2k revs??!!:burnout :cool
I hate autos,i like the fact you want a good driver and want to keep it relatively sleepy but autos with power are horrible unless theyre porsche/audi flappy paddle where you can treat them as a manual and have full control of you wheel speed.
i do understand why you what to keep the auto though, good luck in what ever comes up,
could you not just use the standard ecu with speed/load/rpm signals linked to the auto ecu to it then use the motec just for engine that way the gearbox wouldnt know you had changed the ecu anyway?
or is it going to be harder then it sounds
I honestly dont know how complicated the electronics are for the Auto Box, I am planning on a trip over to Pip tomorrow providing I can get away from work that is,, we will say what he says

got to run it in, 150 miles done, 850 to go
hard work with an auto trying not to use boost and accelerate, I would estimate 0-60 is about 20 seconds :Giggle
No grant not going on the Dyno yet, manual gearbox conversion in September and then a stand alone ECU if cash stretches that far,, then the Dyno,
single turbo after that and fuel pumps sec injectors etc and BIGGER BRAKES but that will be at least a year away or a lottery win

a few more cosmetic jobs to be done before it goes back to Pip for the gearbox job, got my eye on some larger alloys and I am going to get the rest of the Mazdaspeed bodykit side skirts colour coded and fitted, I have the version with the cosmo logo on the side skirts that actually illuminates,,, it lights up when the side lights are switched on,, looks pretty cool, then some BC coilovers to get the stance perfect just hugging the top of the tyres,, we never stop do we.
I have just go a re-am strut brace from a guy in Japan and a bigger intercooler (thanks to Kev for this) so getting the parts together for next stages of the build :mmmm

guys, just did a quick video of the car on a drive by, still unable to use boost and keeping it under 4k, so acceleration is a bit like a granny but goes OK once I have wound her up a bit, still got 600 miles to go before I can use the turbos
