Title: so how does..
Post by: Andyp on June 29, 2004, 05:48:44 PM
so how does one got those bloody annoying ECU screws out holding ones stock ecu in? I can\'t get a screw driver in there! Tried with a lil magnectic socket head that holds screw heads in too and still no joy?

Wanna try the Power FC out but bum me if I can get the top ones out let alone the bottom ones :-0

thanks in advance

Mine was just held in by a bracket which needed a 10mm socket to undo, no screws at all.

It\'s the whole metal box that comes out...

Yeah getting it off was easy, getting the wires out the back was a nightmare!

there are several techniques -

- pull it really really really hard.
- hit it with a hammer
- using a jigsaw and drill, go in through the wing and remove from the exterior of the car
- remove the car from around the ecu
- seal the ecu in shrink wrap, pour in petrol and ignite
- are you trying to use a flat head in a cross head?
- remove the engine, cut a hole in the firewall big enough to fit both hands in and use a friend on the inside directing you to undo the screws
-rotate the bracket around the screw
and finally
- use a small child with an incredibly strong grip to stand in the footwell, and lever themselves against the sides of the footwell and offer huge amounts of torque to loosen the screws

I hoped this helped

Right, just took some photos...

What do we think this black cable is doing thats bolted into the bracket then? Is it ok for this to come off. Seems to lead to the ECU..oddly enough

Here\'s a side view too, can\'t see that it extracts power, just looks earth\'d to me?

So can I remove this do we think and where (can someone draw) do you upstrap this bracket?

much thanks!

black lead IS an earth, and you should be able to find a new home for it happily enough.  Come on y\'big girls blouse - GET IT OUT AND SHOW IT WHOSE BOSS.  Finish removing your ecu shortly after.

hehe ooh put ya tounge back in ;)

I asked on the US forum, some guy said it was just a grounding wire for the ECU. I shall lob the newen in at the weekend when I clean my car and tattoo it with a ring sticker or two, to make myself look ard :rollin

make sure you earth the new one otherwise it might do all sorts of funny things with all the electrical interference in a car.
