Title: MPH/KPH Conversion Question
Post by: Richard.C on November 25, 2011, 11:30:56 AM
I recently purchased a 94 FD that was imported in 2002.

The car appears to have UK clocks on it, ie speedo reads MPH and also KPH but when I picked up the car it appears to be reading MPH on the KPH scale just as if it was a Japanese clock with the converter chip. It\'s not a major issue except as it\'s a UK clock the KPH scale goes up to 300KPH so the portion that\'s being used for normal driving up to 70MPH is tiny (crap scaling).

Has anyone seen this before?

If using UK clocks does it mean the converter chip is not required and maybe this car has both so double converting down?

What does the chip look like?

I plan to take the gauges out this weekend as I also need to check the soldering on the tach as it\'s jumping up and down so I\'d like to fix the speedo while I\'m at it.

Any help or thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Richard

I can only advise from my experience,so here goes; I had a set of clocks (purchased second hand) which had a speed converter added. It was a small black box attached to the back of the clocks with 3 wires, one earth, one to the wire feeding the speedo, cannot remember where the other went.

RX7 clocks suffer from what has been descibed as \'drying out\' of the solder, so once the readings become irratic its usually easier to replace them with another set. (I\'m on my third set).

Hope this helps, I\'m sure someone else will have a more concise answer.

Thanks CJR, I think the tach issue is almost definitely the solder problem.

Does anyone know if the speedo signal is the same for a UK car and a Japan car? i.e. is the speed reference the same and the difference accommodated in the gauge itself? A friend with an imported MR2 said the Toyota has a different reference!

Thanks

The chip would have been fitted to stop the 112mph limiter that is on the standard ECU

Is the limiter in the ECU or the gauge cluster?

I\'m running a Power FC so if it\'s in the ECU I should okay right?

Thanks for the help so far guy\'s.

The speed signal is sent from the gauge to the ECU which is programmed with the limiter, PFC has no limiter so all should be good if you pull the chip.
