Title: Pre-Built Engines
Post by: MintyFresh on June 29, 2004, 12:24:15 AM
Are there any companies in japan that sell rotary engines already modded with high horsepower ready to drop in?

Yep, but they cost a fortune if u dont supply a core. Also cost a bit to ship here...

And then you have to get it tuned by some one when it arrives. Didnt want a warrantee did u? :rollin

I enquired a wee while ago. Standard new engine is around £5000 upwards so i guess you can keep adding the ££££ for a new ported one....

theres no point, the engine builders here are just as capable as in japan, its just nobody wants to spend the money over here or they hav a good engine but dont bother doing any other bits. The block is just part of the power process, the rest comes from good tuning, good fueling and the correct size turbo for what you want plus a few extras, exhaust, inlet, coils, plugs, timing etc.

Just out of interest are there any of the guys from japan who can post some details of the times on the 1/4 to compare. Or HP figures.

regards

tony

Does anyone think that the number of FD\'s in the UK would justify someone, or a company having \'off the shelf\' exchange engines available in the UK?

I know many rotary mechanics have a backlog of people awaiting rebuilds!!!!

Car to garage, wait, engine out, wait, engine stripped, wait, engine rebuilt, wait, engine put in - all takes a long time!

Having rebuilt units on the shelf would cut down on waiting time. Old engine out, reconditioned engine in, old unit gets reconditioned for next punter.

The sticking point might be cost. How much do you charge a customer for the reconditioned engine, when you don\'t know how much money you\'ll need to throw at the engine coming out?

Keep it simple, offer a small range, say stock and ported.

Good thought, or not so clever?

Or does someone already do this?

ok - an experienced builder would/should have a record of destroyed engines over the past 2 years.  There should be a way of working out the average cost of the rebuild in parts during that period, and such working out the average cost of the rebuild.  Add on a safety markup to cover any bad patches of badly hurt engines, et voila!!  a nice quick turnaround engine replacer.  maybe vary the pricing on type of failure, etc, but seems like it may be a viable option...??

Cool, when shall we start OJ?

Ok, our combined talents probably mean we can undo a few nuts.....oh, maybe not, you tend to snap bolts.......and you\'d insist on the housings being purple........

I\'d do my usual trick of thinking I know what to do, but not being able to do it.....plus I squeel like a girl when I catch my knuckles....

Perhaps leave it to someone with more ability, but less flair than us ;)

It\'s true, I\'ve heard it - he squeels like that fat bloke in \'Deliverance\'

And talking of Deliverance, it\'s not the only time u squeel like a girl when OJ\'s about either..

good to see OJ still getting plenty of stick :D :D :D

I think the "in stock" re-built engine is a fantastic idea ... there has to be money in it for someone ?

QuoteOJ still getting plenty of stick

Shush - you know how jealous Rich gets.  Yup - last nut I knackered was on the last Cat.  It was seized, and I managed to get enough force on it through my 1/4" ratchet I bent the stud through about 20 degrees.  When I worked on site, I was banned from using sledge hammers, cos I kept breaking them.  I had to use a club hammer instead. I looked ridiculous!

You\'d think so, but you\'d need 2 rotary mechanics working on the installs, and a third to do nothing but engines...  feasible?

Why would u need 3 of them?

BTW, I presume you and Max are going to stump up the initial \'investment\' in order to get the first engines built and ready, yeah? Cool! ;)

Well I\'m figuring the rate engines go, and the amount of time to turn them around, two mechanics would be needed to remove then knackered engine, install the new engine, ensure all is well, strip the old engine, and keep what\'s reusable.

the third mechanic would be responsible for cleaning, measuring tolerances and building the engine, ensuring it runs on a bench, and keeping engines up to stock.  Obviously they can swap and change as required, to help with backlogs, but that\'s how I\'d try and run it initially, with non standard/ street ported engines available to order.

Hmmmm - I can buy a housing... :(

How much would you be prepared to pay for an engine that could be put into your car inside 2 days, with no more than a weeks stand time, and has been run in on a bench...??  Currently rebuilds range from £2k to £3.5 ish, depending on builder and spec...

I believe so yes, but then I guess he can only do one on any given weekend.

I wouldnt pay significantly extra anyway, by doing something like this they would just have a greater chance of securing my business.

It does not say what you get but have just looked at the k/sport price list and £5500 you get there top of the range engine, they just call it super reinforced. But you must get some sort of warentee Miguel did, but its the hassel of if it goes wrong shipping it back and waiting for a replacement. Much much better off getting Carl or someone to build something nice and strong, and if it goes tits up its a short waiting period for the replacemet.

I agree, I dont think theres much wrong with engine building over here. If u buy from japan u still have to build up all the ancillaires and tune it. And send it back when u kill it any way :)

Besides, if we import engines UK engine building wont get any better :(

Think long term for Rotors :)

I think there is money in it as well Steve :)

OJ will always get stick, he encourages it ;)

You could buy an engine from Oz.

One of the websites has a nice 20b with a triple turbo manifold (turbos not included) that has been proven to 1000bhp for a mere £7000 exc. shipping.

Bargain :D :D :D

Seem very cheap on all of their ready built engines as well. All the prices are in aussie dollars. Currently aus$ 2.6 to 1 pound
Title: Engines from Here... err... Japan?
Post by: Schtoo on July 01, 2004, 05:27:04 PM
Yep, you can order one stand alone and just spec your power output (within reason) and it will probably be delivered to your door.

Here, it\'s not so bad I guess. But delivery fees would be thought the roof to anywhere else.

Of course, if you needed to learn how to do the porting yourself, go wait outside Amemiya and wait for Amemiya-san to walk outside with his die grinder and a hose. I am sure I have a pic of him doing ports in the street...

Having said all that, I have a mag that goes though most, if not all the engine builders here and what they do/how much it costs. Prices ranged from Y220,000-550,000 changeover plus large parts like rotors/housings. I\'ll bring it home if I remember and punch in some details.

When I get one, and the engine goes pop I\'ll prolly grab one from one of the cheaper places (I think RE-A was reasonabable :p) outright and keep the old one to rebuild myself.

Or...

Maybe I could find something interesting to do. Maybe a 20b or a Renesis... :)

I think the way to go is to develop the UK engine building scene, keep the money in this country, experiance will go up, turnarounds and volume better and the price will eventually go down.

Talking about Engines, Geoff has just finshed rebuilding mine
!!! WHOOHOO cant wait to pick it up, three months without my RX7 has done my head in, the delay caused with me scrimping and scraping the cash before I could afford to have it done.
But the saving will be worth it. hmmmm I need to start washing car windows at the traffic lights to pay for petrol now!!:rollin
