Title: rx7 with a new engine (not rotary)
Post by: billybobbooth on November 15, 2011, 05:58:17 PM
as i work on alfas ive been thinking would it be a good idea if i took a rotten fb/fc (so would have been scraped)
reweld it or take the broken lump out.
and fit a alfa deisel engine or a alfa t spark engine in?
or its this just a bad idea just to save a fb/fc from going to metal heven???

Probably cheaper just to stick LPG on the current engine !

always wanted a mr2 with a desel lump in as i loved the looks but not the mpg
love the rx fc looks even better but want to shoot myself at the 2 gallons per mile.
so was thinking of getting a scrapper keeping it stock and throwing in a deisel as a run about to and from work.

lpg sounds a good plan but as a good kit is 1-2k i would much rather just put that to fuel for the time i would drive it.

wasnt thinking for my current car was thinkng to keep a fb or fc from the crap man.

Go with an impco carb (or 2 on a weber manifold), and a Toroidal Tank in the boot and get it certified and you should have change out of 1k.

I see equal to equivalent to 35-40mpg deisel on the 13b ! Good 16-20mpg on lpg at half the price of diesel. Been doing it for almost 4yrs now.

What are the specs on the diesels. You would probably need a full donor car for the engine, ecu and fuel system.

Would be a fun project for sure.

Diesel Rx would be nice. :) But not with old diesel, like Mercedes 2l N/A! 0-62mph would be like 7 weeks... :)

I\'m not a massive fan of these engine swaps personally, as imo if you \'saving\' a rotary by changing the rotary your not really saving it are you? Does that makes sence, HOWEVER. I\'m very shocked that no one has put a VW 1.8 20v Turbo in an RX-7 yet, but i imagine converting on to RWD could be a real problem. How about a 1.8 MX5 engine? Are the drive trains now similar? And you can always turbo or sueprcharge one of them.

Its all in the tune! Get someone who knows what they are doing to map your cars!

How can a single turbo fd with over 400 hp be getting significantly better mileage than you guys?

Guy probably has a good point to be honest, but i don\'t drive mine often enough to be worried about the MPG.

:censored::censored::censored::censored: me mate i was exagerating about the mpg, + i dont exactly pottle around in the fc even when at 30 or 40 im sat in 2nd,

as for a not to some one about a doner car thats not a prob i work for the biggest alfa company in the uk we have lots a of cars.

i made this thread to see if anyone thought it was a good idea or not,
the alfs 10v turbo lumps are fairly bullet proof, mostly the intake pipes that brake and have good power.

aside from buying the car and the doner car i can do alot of fabricating my only concer would be a gearbox???? e.g. al;fas are front wheel drive front engine, where the rx is front engine rwd and the box wouldnt swap over,

secont of all i havent had my current car mapped as i couldnt be assed as the car was coming off the road 6 months after i bought it and wasnt worth spending the money on a map when it would be a useless map when the car comes back out of the garage. (cant be assed to get into details as to why rear my other posts to find out why.)

Wouldn\'t you mount it at 90 deg to the original layout and make an adapter between the engine and the original gearbox ? Also depends how short the gearbox is too. A diesel would only rev to 4k wouldn\'t it ?

If you were to use the original gearbox wouldn\'t it be under serious stress from a turbo diesel\'s torque?  You\'d need a different final drive too otherwise you\'d run out of revs at 80 or so in top.

If you could get it to fit, would a transit turbo diesel be worth looking at?  Right layout, bullet proof in terms of reliability and you could tweak the power up quite nicely by playing about with the fuel pump and turbo and you can probably get the drivetrain for buttons.

Yes our old transit Luton used to drift in the wet, awesome times. However it wasn\'t very reliable I didn\'t think! But then eveyone else I speak to goes on about the transit engine being reliable, perhaps we just a had a crap one.

New BMW Diesel would be awesome. But it would be expensive. And electrics would be difficult... But how about old one...?

yer the prob is i have alfa parts at free axcess. but after mesuring one hight wise i dont think it will easly fit due to the shape of the sump, yer i couldnt use the stock box due to the revs as it would only do like a max of 80 mph at about 4k in 5th., yer pug ones are the best they come in loads of cars.
