ive been doing surches about leaving m car in storage and about shutting the car down properly. but found nothing.

questions
1. what am i ment to do? if it was a normal car i would walm the car up and just stop the fuel pump till it died then try and start it a few times to make sure its all gone. but im sure this is fairly bad on a rotary due to the tips.
2. i would normaly drain the water once the car is semi cooled down to stop warpage in the head and block so the head gaskets ect are ok im asuming this is still worth doing???
3. the engine will be taken out while its being stored for ether a rebuild (dosnt need one but while its out and everything is ok it would be worth it saves on new housings ect) or as im aving all the external parts taken off water pump, inlet, exhaust man ect so makes it easyer to work on, anyways the question is it worth doing this asap to preserve the engine or dont it really matter if its now or later as far as trying not to rebuild the thing?
as said my engine is good and strong so i dont wanna damage it really. also there is vertualy no fuel in tank and it will be having new fuel tank braded lines and new pumps rail and injectors when she gets started back up.
thanks guys. p.s. at the mo im not ment to dive no tax but is mot and insured so i can still walm her up and sort of drive it if i have to but it did get a very good drive before she got stored.
i think you have 2 choices really
1 - run the car at least once a month to keep it all nice and loose
2 - really really brave , fill it to the top with oil ( and i mean to the TOP ) and just leave it
Stu
Note - im not responsible for any damage to your car :)
well My RX7 was sat up for 4/5 years with no special treatment as far as im aware of...nd runs hunky doory now lol
mine was sat for 2years without being started before i bought it, it started ok after a few little problems which rx-dave sorted for me (thanks again), now runs fine, good compression etc.
im wanting to park it up now over the winter so would be interested to see tips on what to do, how to leave it, i will be able to start it once a month, but not be able to drive it anywhere.
Well if you leave it stood make sure you have good antifreeze in it and i wouldn\'t go as far as to start it every month but i\'d give it a turn of the crank every so often just so the apex seals get a bit of in and out action ;)
Wouldn\'t worry about the Fuel etc just run it low and stick a gallon of good stuff in when you bring it out for Summer. One thing i have noticed in the past when my car has been laid up for a while is i get Flat spots in the tires which is annoying. So to get round this i put my stockers on with some old grotty tires which i don\'t care about.
my fd sat for 6 years in a garage and wasnt even looked at before i bought it with the handbrake off and that was about it, i put some brake fluid in the spark plug holes before i turned it over the first time, i had some electrical issues to deal with but no mechanical problems at all and it runs real strong now
the wheels will be off the car and the tyres off the wheels + got a new set of wheels and tyres to fit too so not worried about tyres same with brakes as i have a set of 330mm to go on the front and going to make a custom set for the back so brakes and a prob, yer i can start car for a while but then i wont be able to but i sopose if i have the engine out but with oil still in it i can turn it over by hand a good few time to keep it all ok.
seond option is just rebuild it.
yer it has new anti freeze in and i dont intend to tuch the engine till the summer when its a lighter and b warmer.
so i may just warm her up and drive it a bit on the trade plates just to keep it all nice and working then in summer can do all engine work at once so i get it running again for next winter.
thanks guys also is it worth taking the sp out and putting a few drops of oil in from a sarringe (mean only a few drops) before i turn it over??
only thing i\'d add is do the 3k shutdown method when turning her off...
Hold the accelarator at 3k rpm, turn off, as the engine dies put the foot right to the floor. This keeps the rotors spinning and gets any remaining fuel out the housings. If its left in for a while it will eat the water seals = bad
graeme
Also take oil cap off for a few hours while engine hot, this \'may\' help let out some fuel vapour and water vapour in the oil neck and below. I do this every time and knock off the batery each time I drive the car anyway particulary in winter and this seems to help with the mayo/gunk you can sometime get.

Just put mine in the garage now till spring and other than the 3k shutdown and taking the battery off its always fired on the button.

mines been off the road for a while and i start her up once in a while, I do the same as Neil and shes never failed to start.

a kiwi friend of mine who had a few rx7\'s before moving over to britain swears by this if the car has sat for a long time

Think that may be a mith.... I have had many Rotarys and have worked on many more, i\'ve never seen a water seal fail, its always the housings that seem to go due to dodgy design / water seal groove corrosion also i\'ve left flooded low compression engines for months and never had an issue. So i think its what ever helps you sleep at night :)
I personally hate the idea of the Apex seal springs going flat when one is parked pushed in for any length of time. But!! Again that may be a mith but its the one that makes most sense to me after my first hand experience of these motors...
Thing is i bought a car a bit back that had stood for ten years without any prep, once a few things where done (change fuel/ oil/ battery) it ran fine, So as i say do as much or as little as you want, i really don\'t think a winter/year is allot of time to lay a car up.

You willing to bet an engine on that? :P hehe
I thought i\'d popped an apex seal a few years ago when I was back visiting the folks in Edinburgh at xmas. Left her outside in the snow (and I mean she got encased in it - couldn\'t even see the bonnet over the drift!) and on firing she only ran on one rotor. Needless to say, I bricked it but it must have frozen in place. Couple of minutes at idle and a few small/one massive backfires later all was well again :)
well she has been sat for about a month apart from the batery being dead (was disconected) (fool me for buying a diffrent battery, old one was 4 years old thought i would replace it new one is a dud)
anyways apart from a bit of blue smoke (beleive the turbo seals have gone as i didnt smoke then after i upped boost no loss in compretion its smokes on start up for 30 secs and if i boot her you get the odd bit nothing bad nothing to worry me+ she does have oil injectors.) she fired up on all 6 no misses run strait to 2k sat the for her normal warming up time and she drove as if i had never turned her off.
did a 3k shut down. took out sp 2 drops of oil turned her by hand 2 drops did all 6 spun her over so hopefuly she will be all good again engine is coming out in 6 months so after that its all down to fait.
anyways all your replys have been very usefull. hope all is ok.
