Title: Oil temps
Post by: Kenji on November 07, 2011, 11:55:07 PM
I have a \'94 Type R FD, with the twin oil coolers.

What oil temps should I be seeing normally?

Because at the moment, I think they\'re cooling a bit too much. Cruising on the highway, at 120 km/h, oil temps are around 72 degrees Celsius.
In city traffic, it rises to around 80-85 degrees, but as soon as I hit the highway again, temps drop rapidly to 70-ish.
Isn;t that a bit too cold?

Temp sensor is in a sandwichplate beween block and oil filter.

I would say they\'re fine, IMO.... mine are about the same :)

Okay, cool. Was just a bit weirded out. Oil temps in my previous car (500+ bhp 1JZ) were around 95 degrees (with oil cooler), so wasn\'t sure if the 13B was fine with that.

My FD was MOT\'d yesterday by the Rotary expert here in the Netherlands (he\'s been working with rotaries for 35 years now, and owns the biggest rotary car collection in NL), and I asked the same question to him.

He said the twin oil coolers are VERY good at what they do. Apparently, the FDs with the twin coolers are made especially for warmer climates, such as California, Miami, and warmer regions in Asia. Ther\'s also models with a single cooler, which is more adepted to "our" climate, where there are more prolonged times of cooler weather.
And the non oil cooler models are for cold Northern regions.
The only thing "we" can do about it is either live with it (the 13B will not bother much with slightly cooler oil), or shield off one of the coolers so it doesn\'t catch a lot of drivingwind to raise oil temps slightly.
