Title: Update on Turbo.
Post by: shaunwil on November 03, 2011, 10:33:02 PM
As I seem to hardly show the changes with my car I wanted to show the progress on my turbo setup. I ran a GT3574 Journal turbo but killed the bearings on it earlier in the year.

After Plenty of thought and a ride in a GT4088 setup I decided to swap the setup for a GT3574r (track-day car) due to spool up and its an easier swap on my manifold and Downpipe.

New Turbo with ported shroud :

When the turbo came off the manifold was found to be cracked. Thanks to a nice chap in Stockport it got Tig welded back up. The whole lot got shipped off to get zircotec coated (performance white) and got back early this week. Looks amazing, hopefully it will stay as clean once on the car :

Looking at fitting over the weekend, shouldn\'t take too long. Then I need to get it booked in to get tuned.

I had thought you had got a slightly larger turbo? Have you just got the ball bearing version then? Earlier spool up for sure with that bad boy, make sure you pre filter the oil delivered to the turbo and that you have the right size oil hole feed as, I\'m sure you all ready know, they don\'t need mass amounts of oil like a journal bearing turbo do. Too much oil and you will have a James bond style smoke screen. Sing pumped out I the exhaust.

Did you consider the GTX version of the 35R? Much high peak HP as I think they are a billet inducer rather than a forged/cast wheel, but I may be wrong.

yep restrictor size is important on BB CHRA.

GTX are good but still quite pricey!!!

Post by: Grant Monkhouse on November 04, 2011, 12:08:43 PM
Yep which is why I went for the BW over a garrett. I can\'t justify the prices at all, and the GTX range is even more heavily priced then the R range!!

Saying that though looking at prices of the new EFr range from BW, they are stupidly priced too. Looking around £2,000 for the second largest one in the EFR series and only capable of 8,00hp. Mind you with words used for the bits inside them like gamma titanium makes them sound special!!!

We shall, I\'m not even sure if they have even released all the turbos yet, they\'re creating a lot of buzz about them and a lot of people want to run them on their rotaries but I haven\'t seen any results as of yet.

The restrictor is in the turbo housing already on these baby\'s.You do need to make sure you have a decent size drain from the turbo.

Post by: Ed_RX7 on November 04, 2011, 01:16:43 PM
exactly! Makes me wonder why its taking so long......personally i would need to see and increase of 70-100rwhp difference to warrant spending that sort of mony on one of those. As lets face it BW are truck/tractor jobs in essence...but relatively good value for the power you can get from them.

Hence the reason why People like Shaun and myself prefer to pay for turbo\'s from ( lets say) seasoned manufacturers like MItsubishi and Garrett to name a few.

But to be fair BW are now starting to produce turbos for the vehicle market as opposed to the commercial market.....So if they can hone in the pricing and the snails produce what they are claiming then they will undoubtedly begin to increase their market share.

Blimey I\'m away for a morning and there is a raft of posts :D

I didn\'t go any bigger because I want the low down spool to pull the car out of the bends quicker. When the journal was shot the turbo had better pick-up than CJR\'s GT4088. 450 - 500bhp at the flywheel should be more than plenty for the trackdays I do. I should hopefully see full boost at 3k, just hope its still happy at 7k (the journal was still pulling strong).

I was going to say there looks to be a pill on the inlet feed. Its an A-spec Turbo build. I had looked at the GT3794 from FPA but they didn\'t even bother replying to an email.

I was with Garrett before and its done me fine. A-spec turbos aren\'t as expensive as the oem stuff but are more suited to the 13b engine.

The Drain is a -10 (or even -12) line off the bottom of the turbo so never had any problems with the previous turbo !

Stu - Your more than welcome, but you need to have a ride at Oulton on a trackday. Roads just don\'t give it justice.

I\'ll keep the photos coming as it gets fit :D

Im going to go on other site and tell Rob and Smiler you said that, hahahaha.
Yeh, the bullseye versions are good....the BatMoWheels are intresting
i was only looking at those batmowheels the other day, very intersting idea what they have come up with, even if they didnt make a difference in how much air the turbo would flow they still look great!!

i may contact bullseye in the future as the turbo i have got they can make them capable of flowing enough for 1500HP!!! in a turbo that is a bit smaller than a GT42!!

Play suspended due to rain.....................

Just an update.

Started with an empty hole :

Got the manifold into position and bolted back into place (new washers and nuts too)

Started at the top and then jacked the car up. Joy of having a monster jack :D

Started swapping out the bits on the turbo only to find the high feed oil line and water pickups aren\'t the same as the original Turbo. Anybody know what threads they are ???

Carried on and positioned the turbo tightened down the hot-side and bolted turbo into position.

I started feeding the downpipe in only to find I should have put the V-clamp on the turbo. Loosened the bolts off and stuck it on. Tightened the turbo back down. Roughly aligned the downpipe, started putting the wastegate back on and the heavens opened !

Off to see if I can find what the threads are. Maybe off get some tomorrow !

Ordered the Filter and Restrictor off Ebay and all the adapters off think auto.

The oil feed pipe may need replacing too because the -4 end has a 90 deg bend in it and I\'m going to rung a bango that will be the bend !

Shaun how do you find your car when it has snowed?
Title: Update on Turbo.
Post by: shaunwil on November 05, 2011, 12:14:59 PM
Last year in the FB it was ok, but the really cold weather stopped the LPG working so I spent most of the really bad snow at home.

I did us it all year round the year before with light snow and had no real problems.

If it snowed heavy again this year I might consider putting some snow tyres on my spare wheels !

Bit more work today.

Got the wastegate clamped in to position.

Clamped up the Manifold to the hotside. Added exhaust goop to the exhaust pickup and clamped the manifold to the Mid-pipe silencer.

Rough aligned the front cover and replaced all the pipes. My Filter isn\'t looking too good. Not sure if a clean and re-oil is better than a new one.

Have to wait for the fittings now. Wished I\'d check this before now !

I\'ll get my coat.

Shaun car is looking awsom, hopefully next year i\'ll make it to a few track days with mine and get a passenger ride :)

A-spec only offer it as a GT version. The wheels are different to the GT35R.

The journal bearing A-spec GT3574 picked its feet up like a GT35R so the version I have now should pickup very quickly.

Update...................................

After the turbo Hot-side went spotty on the ceramic coat (surface treatment didn\'t work on the turbo) Zircotec offered to re-coat in a colour of my choosing for free. Went for the performance Black Coating and sent it off. Came back within a week looking extremely nice.

Got the turbo re-fitted and was at WGT yesterday. Car is now making quite good power, at 0.9bar it is seeing 423bhp at the Flywheel. Its making full boost a good 300rpm sooner than the Journel version (and that wasn\'t a slouch). Making full boost at 3.5k. But the way it develops the boost makes it feel closer to a twin turbo pickup where boost is always there.

Bad news is the Clutch isn\'t happy. Will need to upgrade before the boost is turned up again. Pip hopes we should see 450bhp at the flywheel with instant response :D

Should make the car a very capable trackday car. Just need to sort out the tyres and suspension for the new year.

Sounds good dude. What does the ported shroud sound like when you lift off the throttle? Or are you running a BOV?

What are you planning to cap the boost at? Just 1bar?? Think you should go for more and shoot for 500fwhp ;) :D

Are you running any kind of WI?
Title: Update on Turbo.
Post by: shaunwil on December 21, 2011, 06:09:45 PM
Boost Cap in the past was 1.05 bar on the Journal bearing version. It started making just extra heat after that point. We will see what this will do :D

I\'ve got WI installed on a single jet system straight after the intercooler. Its used more as a band aid to help pull air temps back down when on boost. I\'m running the faster air temp sensor too !

TBH its been the boost low down to get a good pull out of corners rather than top end figures. 500fwhp would be nice though, even if just on a high setting, but I\'d be surprised if this turbo would get there.

Oh and the ported shroud whistles on boost, sounds very cool. Even at 2k rpm its popping the BOV when you come off throttle :D

Have you thought of going pre turbo WI? That will help spoilt he turbo some more a little earlier and help create more power through out the range of rpm?

I have considered it in the past but always been worried about damaging the turbo by not getting good enough atomisation on the water.

I wouldn\'t worry about it. The 12a elford turbo engine was pre turbo carb\'d!!!!!

Have heard some horror stories about damaging turbine wheels so never really worried about doing it.

My next priority is getting a twin plate clutch in so I can get use of whats available ! Then its probably a stronger diff too !

Yes that\'s probably the best. No point having power if you can\'t use it. Per turbo is fine, you just got to make sure it has a good sprayer
