Title: Fitting parts to the FD
Post by: MintyFresh on June 27, 2004, 04:50:51 PM
This might turn out to be a stupid question, but how easy is it to fit things like a front mount intercooler, electronic boost controllers, and even single turbo conversions?

Obviously it would all need mapping but can the fitting be done by a mere mechanical mortal?

a front mount is ok if its designed for the car, you may have to \'adjust some of the brackets and drill a few holes but that should be it depending on quality.  Boost controllers are easy enough but on the twins can be very fidly, speak to some in the know on what pipes to take off/blank off and which one to connect the controller to, you will only be able to up the boost on the second turbo with a boost controller.

As for a single,  different kettle of fish. I think the best way is to take the engine out. Taking the twins off while the engine is still in is a nightmare. Also, you will need an ecu, which means you can junk all the solanoids and control valves together with most of the vacume pipes. You will need to make blank off plates for various parts. If the engine is out you can make sure every thing is fitted to the engine properly and drop it in complete. You can then fully sort the wiring loom and the rest of the engine bay, intercooler etc while the engine is out making that job a lot easier. Not something to tackle if you havent got the space, tools and skills. Even a complete kit will require a lot of work. Thats why tuners need so much money to fit them.  Worth it though.
