Title: Front bumpers, mounting points, support bars etc need to know everything?
Post by: scooby_si on June 26, 2004, 12:57:30 PM
As title still having major headaches getting a front bumper on my car properly.....
Latest attempt has been with a, now repaired, 2nd hand original CWest variety although the bodyshop is far from happy about being able to get it to fit we\'ll & even said if i wanted it fitting he would hunt me down if i ever said he fitted it, guys a perfectionist & does have a mint reputation to upkeep & i equally want a decent job (since it\'s taking so long.... lol)
Now i know that no 2 RX7\'s seem to be the same for varying degrees of bizarre panel gaps at the front but to be fair it doesn\'t seem to want to meet up perfectly with my front end, which is with all new/standard bonnet, wings & headlights which are aligned very nicely now & i can see what they\'re talking bout when they showed me this morning...
Now as you all know i\'m pretty cr4p at the best of times with technical descriptions but here the main problems as i recall:
Well one of the main issue appears to be with the lugs on the wings just to the side of the headlights as per (http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v44/scooby_si/lug.jpg) which even if the bumper is made to fit at the extremities where chap has his hand either by pushing bumper in or wing out (which would be most likely/best plan you reckon surely wing is as it should be?) (http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v44/scooby_si/lug2.jpg) the bit where "lug" is still hits a major part of the bumper & so either the bumper need a large chunk removing, leaving nearly nothing at that point, or the lug needs modifying, bending or removing? but even that aside it still wouldn\'t fit ideally. Not sure but it seems it\'s been filed (or wotever term is) down to fit wotever RX7 it was on previously & as such there\'s not much room for doing the same to make it fit mine nicely......
So any thoughts on that at all? I know the majority of bumpers dont fit ideally & while the bodyshop are very good at reshaping stuff they\'re not fans of the longevity of trying to build up fibreglass to get a decent fit...so next plan is to try another bumper & see how well that fits or can be made to fit.......
Any thoughts tips or cunning plans on that?

Which leads me onto a more general inquire about fitting, namely where are all the mounting points & are any surplus to requirements as such & what\'s the full story with earlier, later or otherwise support bars as the bodyshop weren\'t too happy about the lack of support for my bumper should (i think they mean when (http://mindscraps.com/s/otn/happy/11zwinky.gif)) it may come into contact with sumin at a later date, they are happy to make up additional supports but i recall support bars on earlier, & later? FD\'s which mine doesn\'t really seem to have but wot do i know, anyway pikky of my car when it was/is lacking front bumper (http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v44/scooby_si/front_end1.jpg) (erm best image i can find showing bare front end) & here\'s one although it\'s lacking the new front panel at that time (http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v44/scooby_si/front_end2.jpg) but that aside should there be anything else to support the bumper?
Anyway lettice no yer thoughts & info folks
Cheers
Si

Just to add i am totally happy with the shops abilities & skills & i prefer them being perfectionists over bolting it on & falling to bits later so just wanted to clarify the mounting points & bar things & see wot yer thoughts were generally & otherwise?
Cheers

The veilside C2 that i had fitted was very good genarally, one side around the headlight was spot on but the other was poor. The body shop blended/bridged the wing and the bumper with filler and then re-cut the seam back in afterwards.

As for fixings, just the 4 beside the headlight and the screw through at the back near the wheelarch, the top fixings through the slam panel were pretty good but we also used the alloy strengthening bars from my OE bumper.

It moves about if you try to lift it, but not much, maybe if you can attach the undertrays it\'ll give it more strength.

Good luck

lol u checking out my orbs lol, heard of them before & i\'m a sceptic so unless sum wacko can kum along & say yes they are this & it is X, Y & Z then i\'ll stick with fact that as you can see from clean state of car that it\'s quite a dusty environment which will give these magic things on images as a result & well the camera itself aint exactly squeaky clean neither.....
Si (Dirty sceptic ......lol)

some kits are badly made so they rarely fit perfectly first time Si... the bodyshop should be able to MAKE it fit tho
