Title: ***TRACKDAY - Brands Hatch, Friday 2nd Dec 2011***
Post by: Casey on October 09, 2011, 05:53:43 PM
Here is the last event in the trackday calendar that I will be organising for 2011. Always highly popular and available at a great price of just
£99, or just £84** if you are a full MRC member
if you book before 2nd November . HOWEVER, thare are more than 30 places ALREADY BOOKED AND PAID FOR, so I suggest you book without delay, otherwise you might be disappointed. ;) ** You must purchase your place through the club shop via THIS LINK (http://www.rotaryshop.co.uk/bbrands-hatch---friday-2nd-decemberb-1676-p.asp) to get the MRC price, not through the Mazda on Track website direct. It is also VITAL you PM me to inform me you have booked via the shop so I can ensure a place is secured for you.
Never done a trackday before? As on all trackdays, they are well managed and marshalled. There will be a comprehensive, compulsory, safety briefing at the start of the day for all drivers, followed by some slow “sighting laps” behind a lead car. There will be plenty of experienced trackheads present who will be only too happy give assistance to any novices. This is a short track, and very easy to learn, but very hard to master! Paddock Hill bend is legendary - immediately after the main straight, where you could be touching 120mph, you see a blind bend as the track dips suddenly downhill and to the right. It\'s an exhilarating feeling to take this corner at speed...
Provisional timings are:
Sign On 7:30 till 8:30 Safety Briefing 08.30 Sighting Laps at 9:00 Lunch break 12:00 – 13:00 Finish - 16.00
Event Type: Open Pitlane. “Open Pitlane” means you are free to drive on the circuit when you like, for as much as you like, subject to safe numbers on circuit and being careful not to overheat your engine, brakes or tyres! Typically a 15 minute session, follwed by a 20-30 minute coool down is about right.
Address;
Brands Hatch Fawkham Longfield Kent DA3 8NG
Located on the A20. It is well signposted from junction 3 of the M25.
Circuit Statistics: Length: 1.2miles Corners: 6 Max Noise: 105dB Static
THE COST?: As above, if you book early, the price is £99. Even better, if you are a full MRC member, you can claim back a £15 rebate after the event, so bringing the cost down to just £84 for a full day on track! What more incentive do you need?! Note MRC members are limited to a maximum rebate of £40 on trackdays for this year. REQUIREMENTS: Helmets are required, and you MUST bring along your driving license (both parts if you have them) on the day for inspection. PAYMENT FOR THIS EVENT: Payment can be made via the Mazda on Track website CLICK HERE FOR LINK (http://www.mazdaontrack.co.uk/brands-hatch-indy---2nd-december-2011-483-p.asp) EXTRA DRIVERS: £25 per extra driver. PASSENGERS: £10 per passenger. GARAGES: £30, but we usually get there early enough on the day to get some garages together for our group. INSURANCE: Insurance is not compulsory, but your normal road insurance is unlikely to cover you. Please look at the separate “Trackday Insurance” thread for advice and make your own judgement. INSTRUCTION: Mazda on Track have professionally qualified instructors available; £25 for one session (~20mins on track). These can be booked in advance, or on the day. LOCAL ACCOMMODATION: Some people may want to stay locally the night before, the night after, or even both! There is a hotel located right at the circuit itself
QUESTIONS: That’s what I’m here for! I’ll do my best to answer any questions you post on this thread, or PM me.
I\'ve booked and paid for my place! (PLEASE don’t cut and paste the list, just briefly post up your interest in this thread, or PM me, and I\'ll edit this list to keep things tidy) 1. Harrizone/Rote8 2. Casey 3. Clive 4. Duffbyname 5. Zarterone 6. GreySilver Beast 7. madder 8. CrissyUK 9. HypoThermia 10. bigpete 11. conann 12. XMASRX871 13. Arnie_O 14. 15.
Here are a couple of videos from our last outing to Brands, sorry video qality not that good! Note the georgeous weather in the pm session!

As above, Just £84 if your a club member plus this should be a good event to come to even if you don\'t go out on track,
I will go to this one as I need to find out my car\'s alterations will now let me get around Brands a bit more sensible than last time when I came away frustrated at my lack of speed.
Mind you the RX-8 is a bit quicker than the first car that I raced there in 1974 when I was 17 seen here at the top of the old pits:eek:

i assume this is the indy circuit? is there a reason for the 2nd november deadline? reason i ask is that i have another trackday on the 5th november and wouldnt want to book this one until i know the car survives the one on the 5th?

Hi Tony - the only reason for booking before 2nd Nov is there is currently an early booking discount. The price may well rise to £129 after that date. Additionally, ~35 places are currently taken, so there is a fair chance all the available places will be booked before 2nd Nov anyway. This has been a very popular event in the calendar with the MX-5 crowd for many years now.

Let me know when you\'ve paid up Dom, and if you pay direct or via the MRC shop. Don\'t wait too long as there are 45 people on the MoT website already paid up for this, so it\'s looking very popular! :cheers

Quote from: antnicuk;79325745 is already too many for the Indy circuit. It\'s gonna be busy on track!
The majority of cars can\'t stay out for more than about a third of the total tracktime (mine included), so that means 45 cars booked so far, with average of 15 cars out at once, which isn\'t a problem at all on the Inday cct. In reality, I suspect they may run with 60-70, and this may involve the odd bit of waiting. I think the Indy track capacity is ~25 cars max, where they will hold back cars in the pitlane until someone comes in.
It\'s the consequence of a cheap trackday. Lowering the numbers means putting up the price. In reality it hasn\'t worked too badly in previous years.

Hi Trevor, a mate of mine was at Snetterton yesterday taking pictures. What car were you driving? He might have some pics of you (he\'s a pretty good cameraman). He was there with some other friends driving an old Celica with 200,000 on the clock. They expected it to break, but it somehow survived!
Snetterton 300 is a really good circuit, so I hope you enjoyed your day, and if your car survived I\'m sure you did :D
Brands - best thing is to email Nick Dougill at Mazda on Track to see if you can be put on a reserve list. As this event has booked up so early I think there is a fair chance some people may have to back out for one reason or another - nick.dougill "at" mazdaontrack.co.uk (stops the web crawlers gettign the email address hopefully...)

Cheers for that, will email him now. I recently bought myself a black 07 PZ, to say it survived would be a bit of an overstatement as the poor girl suffered greatly. Tyres shot, brakes shot, clutch shot, engine mounts shot, driver shoudl be shot.....
Hope to meet you guys at Brands

^^^ I didn\'t say welcome :spank
I only just realised this was your first post on the forum. I hope you enjoy being a member of the MRC. If you are "into" trackdays I usually "herd" people towards 5-6 events each year. We get turnouts of between 8 and 25 cars. Remember as a full member you can get a contribution towards trackday costs too.
Plenty of time to get your car sorted before the next event. I managed to overheat my front brake rotors at Snetterton last month and stress fractures appeared :( So, I\'ve had to upgrade to some better ones for Brands Hatch :)
Look at other threads for an idea of past events. We always have a good time on the track and socially too. Hope to see meet you soon :wave

^^ Hi Jon, I spoke to Nick Dougill at Mazdaontrack last Thursday. He has a reserve list running for 2nd Dec, so I can only suggest you email Nick and get your name added and cross your fingers - email, nick.dougill at mazdaontrack.co.uk
Undoubtedly there will be some cancellations, so hope the list isn\'t too long and we see you there :Thumbs-up

No problem, most/all of the group are more than happy to take passengers out. If you\'ve got a helmet, bring it along, else hire on the day (~£10). Anyone is welcome to come along to watch, hang out around the pits, take photos, passenger rides. etc. We always have a good social day centred around the pit area.

I\'ll have to hire a helmet. But that\'s cool ;) I\'m wanting to do a track day but they always come up at the wrong time :(
Would be good to come watch.

As Malcolm said - passengers are welcome :wave
One thing that is worth saying is that passengers do also have to attend briefings and pick up wrist bands to be able to go out on track. Most organisers are able to give mini briefings for latecomers, however it might not be best to rely on that.
Ian.
Title: ***TRACKDAY - Brands Hatch, Friday 2nd Dec 2011***
Post by: Casey on November 14, 2011, 06:36:11 PM
^^ Yep, very good point. Ian\'s correct, if you don\'t get to the 8.30am briefing then you\'ll miss getting a safety wristband = no passengering. Mini-briefings may be possible later in the morning, but you may have to hang around for this to happen. Much easier if you can get to the 8.30am briefing.

Chri5 and Fish - you are both very welcome to come along, as are any MRC and RX8OC members and friends.
BBC Weather is forecasting a dry day, with clear skies and temp of abt 7 degrees...
Here is a summmary of the situation as I currently know it:
GARAGES I have asked Nick Dougill at Mazdaontrack to reserve us 4 garages together, so roughly 3 cars per garage. I would ask for a £5 per car contribution towards the discounted cost of £60 (on the day, in cash please ;). Clive has kindly stumped up for one garage and Nick has offered 4 garages for the price of three.
GETTING THERE FROM EAST ANGLIA - CONVOY DOWN A12 For anyone going to Brands via the A12 in Essex (let me know via PM or posting here if you want to join in);
6.00am departure, meet at BP/M&S service area at the Colchester United Stadium junction. Casey Ian.Mothersole
6.30 departure, A12/A414 junction (see map below) Casey Ian.Mothersole CrissyUK
That should get us to Brands ~7.15am, depending on the M25 bridge queue!
Any changes, additions, or questions?

Many thanks to Malcolm for organising another superb day out yesterday, not only on-track but also the social side of things where people just come along for the day but don\'t go on-track :Thumbsup!
Commiserations to Adrian who tried to get there with his 3rd Gen along but in the end could not get there :o
Sadly we only had RX-8\'s arrive and drive :(, I say sadly because with 85% of the other cars being MX-5\'s the RX-7\'s would have really shone out on track yesterday as our RX-8\'s were collectively the fastest cars there as regards lap times even quicker than the Turbo and pukka race MX-5\'s so it would have been great to see what a good single Turbo RX-7 could do .
Personally I know I did 101 miles yesterday on-track and came home happy that for a road car the car now goes very well around Brands,
Another thing I found is that because I know how many miles and how much fuel I put in the car, I was happy to find out that the car had done 13 miles to the gallon which I think is great as a large proportion of the lap is spent between 7 and 9 thousand revs :cool
Below is a link from a camera put in the car by friend of mine that is of good enough resolution to convert to full screen,
Although with Ian\'s camera it should have cleaner, clearer, quicker laps on it this gives you an idea of a lap of brands in a Rotary :3gears-rh

I was at the trackday friday in my kitcar (Red Sylva Phoenix) and thought you might like to look at some of the video from the day. It is rather poor because the sun was so low but includes a number of RX8s including one smoking a little on upshifting onto the pit straight. Not sure if this is an issue or not bit

Thanks for registering and putting up those video\'s Jeff,
Had a quick look and will again later but from the bit I have seen it looks like a well set up car, what engine does it have ?
I will say that from the bit I have seen people moved much quicker for you than me so I can only figure they don\'t mind you coming by in your special but resented a "normal" car coming by ;)

Hi Clive
I think it has to do with the \'alien\' status for the Phoenix in a group like this which, added to the closing speed, makes people move out of the way. I\'m sure that you where seen as something to measure against rather than something to move out of the way off...if you see what I mean.
The car is a Sylva Phoenix which weighs around the 550Kg mark (without me!) and has a 2.0lt Zetec (Stage 3 head, big cams, Jenvey throttle bodies etc) which puts out around 210BHP. I was running Toyo R888 SG tyres which are the soft version of the R888. I use the car for sprints, trackdays and road trips and I came 2nd in the Sevenoaks and District Motorclub Speed league this year in it.
It is now off the road till the spring as the gearbox needs rebuilding as well as the supercharger which will go on to raise the power to around the 320-340BHP mark.
and this was the sprint at Brands earlier in the year

There are lots of other videos up on youtube including Spa, Goodwood & the Ring.

Massive thanks to Malcolm for helping sort another awesome trackday with the MRC. you really do out do yourself every time mate. Though i never seem to get out with many other club cars on the day lol. Maybe would should all line up in the pits in one big bunch.
Thanks to Clive fo he generous help with my little brake caliper issue, Your help is always apreciated and never ever taken for granted Mr.Clive. Your a true ambassider fo the club and how members set out to help each other. Its no wonder that Mazda Rotary Parts have so many happy and loyal customers with pit lane support like you offer :p . It was a shame we didnt see some of the the usual RX7 faces that we have all grown to know and love... well maybe not love.
And was goot to have some new members along in the group.
Looking forward to 2012\'s calender hopefully I can attend some of the tracks i have missed the the past couple of years (hope Olton will still be in the calender)
oh and thanks to ghetto-bodyworks for the last minute paint job... you know who you are.

Many thanks Ian,
Interesting to see that not once did I manage a clear lap :o
Interesting to see the difference just in how I hold the steering wheel and Malcolm does.
I keep my thumbs out side of the steering wheel, a because by using your thumbs you have more pressure on the wheel for a lot less pressure exerted, also I have seen fellow competitors break thumbs when they have hit something on more than one occasion over the years and the wheel has been spun out of their hands :(.
No way a criticism, just an observation because at the end of the day its whatever people are comfortable with :Thumbs-up

A very interesting observation. I\'d heard before about people breaking thumbs in this way. It\'s a "habit" brought about by road driving instruction many moons ago! I might get more "feel" without the interlocking thumb "death grip" too :Thumbs-up
Many thanks Ian, it will be interesting to play some "side-by-side" playbacks of these laps to see different techniques, lines, gears, etc.
