Title: Japanese Performance Magazine *we want you guys*
Post by: JPMatt on October 08, 2011, 04:23:26 PM
Hi guys,
My name\'s Matt Shaw and I write for Japanese Performance Magazine. During the past 6 months we have hopefully turned a corner with the mag by trying to bring it bang up to date and trying not to alienate people as much as was probably the case in the past. We are trying to get away from Evo and Scooby heavy issues and giving everyone in the scene a chance to get there chosen model/marque into the limelight. We also want to get heavily involved in meets, maybe getting them into a regular slot in the front of the magazine. We know that you guys are knocking out some great cars at the moment but you probably know better than I do as to who deserves to represent the Rotaries with a feature. Please let me know direct of any potential feature cars, meet ideas or anything you think may be relative to get you guys some coverage. If a mod could sticky this too so you have somewhere to chuck your ideas that\'d be great!
Thanks!
Matt :Typing

My direct email is: japaneseperformance@hotmail.co.uk

Hello Matt and welcome to Mazdarotaryclub, the club founded for Cosmo\'s to RX-8 plus everything in the middle and beyond :driving

Real good idea to get the clubs to put cars in a thread for you to see as not all the cars actually go to shows where I now mags get most of there feature cars from.

Hopefully people will put their cars up on here for you to see orrrrrrrrrr, maybe we can get some cars together for a club write up as a feature for you,

p.s. I was warned when Martin, the founder of Jap Performance left a while back that the mag would be maybe not as diverse as it was------------ see that sounded much better than saying, "be warned its going to turn into a Subaru/Evo mag" -------------- :rollin

Quote from: Mir;792851My post is removed!!! Mod what did I do???????????????

Sied the reason is stated

All of our cars are special to each of us, be they full of rust or pristeen, so I have always viewed criticising another members car on par with kicking a mans dog, i.e. "you just don\'t do it".

Laughing because a members car was sugested was really not nice.

Thanks for the comliments, guys. Funnily enough, in reference to the OP, a reporter and photographer actually came down to me almost exactly a year ago and spent the entire day with me and the car, taking pics, writing a feature, took the guy out for a run in it and showed him what proper rotary righteousness is all about. This was after I got in contact with the previous editor to Dan Sherwood after he wrote an editorial about wanting to feature more road daily driven cars and get away from irrelevant track stuff. We agreed that my daily driven commuter spec single turbo 400+ bhp car was a worthwhile candidate, hence the inestimable Carolgees and Matt Richardson (I think) spent the day with us.

Needless to say, the feature never appeared, though you printed some pics I\'d sent in in the "Readers Cars" section. It was a bit annoying because my tuner had burst a gut to get the car finished in time (it was literally finished mapping the day before the photoshoot) and Adam very kindly gave up an entire day to help me get it sorted (we finished cleaning and polishing half an hour before the journos turned up.)

I\'ve since emailed the editor several times but he hasn\'t even had the courtesy to reply, which I consider just plain rude, really. I would have expected a reply even to say "actually, we thought your car is rubbish after all, thanks but no thanks." The photographer said he would send me a disc of photos but never did, either.

Adam had a load of pics on his photobucket he took of the photoshoot, but I can\'t find the link now. I didn\'t take any because I was busy doing the "interview" so its almost like I dreamed the whole thing. Carolgees will probably remember it though, we nearly got rear-ended on the "test run" by a pensioner. It helped him understand why I\'m called Lucky lol.

The only pic I can find now is one of Adam\'s that I retouched. Good job I didn\'t get all excited and tell all my mates "oooooh, I\'m gonna have a mag feature on my car", I\'d have looked a right idiot then, wouldn\'t I? Wish I\'d gone to Banzai now  All in all, a very embittering experience that led me to stop buying JP altogether after repeated attempts to get a reply to my emails (I just flip through it in Smiths now lol). Like I say, I don\'t mind the car being passed over because it wasn\'t good enough (which it is) but to simply ignore me is just rude.

Glad I didn\'t dream it all after all. Thanks to Adam for the use of his pictures

While I\'m at it, Adam\'s car is every bit as deserving of a full feature. It\'s been in the mag before in a group test, be nice to see it get a full slot for itself

I think Clive was looking at this from a neutral forums perspective, its impossible for Clive or any of the mods to know who is friends with who so to that point they then dont know if what may be posted as a joke to a friend will be taken as that or taken offense by.

In another note, Tony\'s 8 it quite awesome, i would also put forward Tekken (not sure if he is on here) but he had the Blue and Carbon RX8 with the Greddy Turbo kit. I think he got a Max Power feature back in the day.

Both nice cars with individuals marks stamped upon them... thats what car modification is all about.

Tekken has been on here but I think is busy with a new family to look after.

Arnie_O\'s motor is not half bad either.  Striking looking, loads of cool parts and running a ported motor, it\'s quite a machine.

A club feature would be nice but if your the owner of a nice RX4 then whats the problem, I can see where your coming from but its a stunning rare car that deserved some spotlight.

we cannot help that JP has been awash with scoobies and evo\'s for ages... its time things changes... contrary to popular belief "There is a replacement for Displacement"

Clive when my rx4 is finished we could do a triple MRC feature. You me and jojo. Title for it could be "standard, mild and wild!". Or "sensible, not so sensible and stupid" stupid being me for putting a 500HP moto in a car 10years older than me.

As I recall Tony refused the mags a feature on his RX-8 because none of them would contribute a donation to Help the Heroes in exchange for the feature. I dunno whether he\'s rethought his stance (or they have) but have to admire his point of principle.

I definitely agree that old skool rotaries should get more exposure. Not just Clive\'s \'4 and the awesome Ralph the insane thing, but some of the excellent cars on Exile are more deserving of being brought to the public\'s attention. After all, the mags run features on like AE86 Corollas and like 240Zs, older rotaries are every bit as good looking, superbly engineered and much rarer in most cases.

I think there should be a stand alone rotary only magazine.
I didnt realize until i was in whsmith flickin through the mags a couple of weeks ago that there are now magazines dedicated to both scoobs and evos. I think there is enough rotary powered vehicles in the uk to have a monthly mag. The cars don`t have to be of a high standard either, as long as there`s an interesting story behind it people will read it.

Totally agree about this - there\'s a wealth of knowledge and every single car ends up different. The great things about modding these cars is the individuality you can add to the car, with each car developing a different spirit according to where its owner wants to go. Rotary mag - i\'d subscribe in an instant

My opinion is that plain colours such as white or black dont get noticed no matter how good they are underneath. I think you should get some cool stickers on there, or a partial wrap of something ludicrous.

See what you mean, even If I go for fibreglass doors it will still look the same !

Even the white in the engine bay gets ignored :p

Its only got a single turbo, full roll cage, no interior, flocked dash, uprated everything and more stuff you can shake a stick at (but needs wider front wheels and tweaking). Completely stock really :Giggle

Did think about some orange wheels :Giggle

Just don\'t stick \'bits\' on it, I haven\'t been into things trying to be something they\'re not for many years. Much prefer stealth. I run my single daily but need an interior to ferry the kids about. Sometimes I think they love it more than me. Gets a lot of attention on the school run ;)

If I\'m honest, I would love to see a piece on FB RX7\'s, or maybe a full rotary spread, from Cosmos to RX8s and everything in between.

Ultimately, give me the old school cars, there just aren\'t enough of them featured imo.

Quote from: Grant Monkhouse;793096My opinion is that plain colours such as white or black dont get noticed no matter how good they are underneath. I think you should get some cool stickers on there, or a partial wrap of something ludicrous.

I can help with that! lol

oh btw, on local meets etc, the tunnel runs that are held every now and then are good places to snap some photos, there\'s a supra one coming up on the 15th October, there\'s usually a few others around, just haven\'t heard about them yet, of course the Miss Banzai ones, next one may be in March.

there\'s also a meet at the Ace cafe on the 29th oct I think for outlaw jap club.

If I\'m honest, I only rarely buy magazines nowdays, they\'re just so expensive for not a lot of entertainment, loads of adverts, not a lot of reviews on cars/events/products etc, any products that do get mentioned aren\'t for my car...

although, saying that, how much is advertising in JP?

I want to register my vote for Nik\'s car.  I think the effort that Nik has put into is particularly noteworthy :yes

It\'s definitely a story worth telling, even if it is a bit painful for Nik to tell haha.

Cheers, Steve. Fair to say that yours would make a proper feature car, too, being easily one of the best FDs in the country (not to mention one of the most expensive lol).

That\'s the problem with the JP guy asking for cars on MRC, of course. If he wants FDs, most of the best cars owners don\'t come on here any more and are on FDUK, and those who are still struggling on, if they have a build thred it\'s in the Members Section and therefore can\'t be seen. That was why I stopped bothering to update my thread on here, I realised it was a waste of time because no-one could actually read the damn thing

Dunno mate, reckon you\'ve spent almost as much over the life of the car!

I agree with you on the project thread though. I stopped bothering with mine on here because the mojority of people who were bothered about reading about my car were already on FDUK and there didn\'t feel like I was reaching a different audience by posting here. Maybe my fault for posting in the members only section, but that could be something for the team here to consider, having a projects section available to all forum members...

Thanks for the comments on my car though mate, I do sometimes think that while it has been fairly well modified in terms of exterior/interior, the fact that it\'s lacking anything special in the engine department would tend to put off magazines from featuring it.

Still, not wanting to miss an opportunity to show it off... :wiggle

Hi guys,
Loads of really nice cars on here thanks for the amount of replies. It has been bought to my attention by Nik that he has been messed about in the past by the old editorial side of the Magazine and for that I am truly sorry. I will be completely honest with you and say that if we approach anyone with regard to a feature we will go through with what we propose but sadly that couldn\'t be said for the previous team. We have taken the magazine forward in the past 10mths and have definitely upped the quality of the content as well as the editorial so it would be worthless if we are judged on the mistakes that have been made by others in the past. If you haven\'t seen the new mag then please pop your head into WhSmith and let us know what you think of the new setup. With regard to your car Nik I have mailed you and hopefully this has resolved the animosity that you quite rightly felt. See you in Guildford on the 6th Nov!

By no means am I knocking yours or Shauns cars, or any standard looking ones for that matter. I think they look great, even more so if they have dropped low. My next FD will either be standard looking or full on wide bodykit, anything in between is just not good enough for me anymore. Lol.

Can fully understand. I\'m happier spending on the go faster bits at the minute. It may change in the future !

Anyone who doesn\'t notice a car like that doesn\'t deserve to have their not noticing noticed ;)

My car came with skirts n stuff and they had been blended into the bodywork. I immediately ripped it off and had the bodywork put back to stock.

I am assuming when you are all saying that your cars don\'t get attention you\'re all talking about car shows n stuff where anything remotely tasteful tends to blend in the background a bit. My car is near stock to look at (lower, nice wheels, de spoilered, street diffuser which I decided to keep after much internal debate) but out on the road amongst the abhorrently bland gaggles of modern car puke it attracts an inordinate amount of attention. Nice attention at that, the sort you would get in a TVR or something, which is very different to the smirking, condescending attention you get if you\'ve covered your car in fibreglass tat. Other drivers necks crane, girlies smile and try to see who\'s driving (whilst trying to look like they\'re not looking), kids jump up and down and wave and teens stand open mouthed pointing it out to their girlfriends \'cos one day they\'re gona av one innit\'.

I think the reason it is well received is because it looks like an enthusiasts sports car and not a \'modified\' car, and it must be the same reason people who know nothing about cars think, even when they notice the cars age, it\'s worth several times more than it is!

Once an FD \'looks\' modified it looks cheap. Fact.

There are haters of course, there will always be haters. If no one undeservedly hates you for something then you are probably not doing very well at life.

All IMO of course, but I am right ;)

Its always kept everything interesting because nobody really owns the same car. The number of mods and the ingenuity of members really shows just how cool these cars really are.

Mine always blends into the crowd at shows, but its by the by.

Nice to see a reply like that Matt. Hopefully your new team will treat future     car owners more professionally. It does take a heck of a lot of effort getting a car \'just right\' for a photo shoot, knowing that many people will be looking at your car.  I can easily imagine the amount of work Nik would have put in to make sure his car was spot on for the day and then to be let down after all that would be very annoying.

May I suggest you also pop over to Exile-rotorsport.com and have a look at some of the classy oldschool Mazdas on there. Some pretty fantastic cars that you might like to do some features on :yes

Yes, these days, "performance cars" usually are those witch look fast. Unfortunatly. :( What happened to sleepers? And RX-7 is so fast at the track anyways, they dont need bodykits.

As i said before, this club has so many awesome cars and builders. I imagine that it would be difficult to pic few to feature in magazine. So i suggest that they would do a article about MRC! :)

How comes I can find this thread on my phone but it\'s fallen on the radar when I search for it on my PC?

Anyway let\'s not forget about the 8\'s here we may not be as quick in a straight line as the FD boys but we can hold our own on the right tracks
