Title: stock twins options
Post by: Eoiny555 on September 23, 2011, 08:08:43 PM
Thinking forward to rebuild time, i know a lot of people go down the single turbo route but im not looking for any power gains & am happy with the standard setup

there is currently 108,000kms on the car so im wondering what to do with the standard hitachi ht-12 turbos, im going to be on a limited budget so im looking for a relaiable option that is not going to be too expensive

I know upgrading to bnr stage 3\'s is the better option but may be to expensive
the other option is buying lower milage stock turbo\'s but you cant be sure of condition

The questions im faced with are:
If the turbos already in they car were in good nick could they be reused? How could this be checked properly?

I have heard of rebuild kits for turbos but apparently they dont last long after rebuilds so does anyone have any experience of this

Not sure on price but you can get the twins rebuilt and they\'d be fine again i\'m sure. You say they apparently dont last long after a rebuild (not heard that myself) butt then think about how many miles you actually do in the car and how many of them are hard driving too.
You can pick up a standard twin pack for £100 now a days which isn\'t to bad really.

There are quiet a few threads over on rx7 club that dont reccomend rebuilds, some say reliability issues are the main concern

The car will be doing less than 5K a year & very little hard driving

I was thinking about picking up a set of used ones but again history could be a issue & they could turn out to be worse than what i have

Lol, wel im not intending on doing trackdays or anything like that so the turbos are not going to be put under any major stress

Very little hard driving - Why is it you own an RX-7? Because it sure as hell isn\'t for the MPG!!

My car had a new set of twins bought from mazda when rebuilt in 2007,
They were not cheap though, £850 for the unit and turbo ancillaries were extra

This would be the ideal option but i dont know if i wil be able to squeeze that into my budget, anybody on here had any experience rebuilding the stock turbos?

afaik the most common cause of twin turbo death is oil seals. i replaced my first pack after the turbo and comp seals went on the secondary, and the \'new\' pack has just had the same happen.

no idea how hard it is to replace those seals, but i\'m willing to bet it\'s fiddly enough that an amateur job won\'t last long.

When I built my new motor I had the twins rebuilt and the wastegates ported.  I\'m driving the car a couple of times a week to work and to car shows.  The driveability of the car is why I stayed with the twins.  I wanted about 350hp so the twins were fine for my application.

my turbos got rebuilt during rebuild 48000miles ago. and are still tight as a drum. however, my receipt shows "turbo rebuild - £800" so you\'d be as well getting brand new ones tbh...
